The Soul 600. 600 essential sounds from the world of Soul music. Some very familiar, others less so, but always, quality.

of the "Soul" sub-genre of R&B;, from the list below containing recordings in a full-spectrum from the polish of New York's Brill Building productions to the gritty Southern Soul out of places like Stax Studios and Muscle Shoals, and everything in between. Rate each record from 1-star (Not Very Good), 2-stars (Okay), 3- (Very Good), 4 (Excellent) to 5 - (Classic Gem). Soul music is often differentiated from 1950's style R&B; recordings in that there is a powerful lead from the singer and/or highly-sophisticated or evolved rhythm section, often using instrumentation (strings, etc.) not previously employed, although there are songs that belong to both R&B; and Soul at the same time, such as Jerry Butler & The Impressions' "For Your Precious Love". I would like to give a shout out and big credit to all the Philly Old School jocks like Hy Lit, the late Joe Niagra, the late Georgie Woods, Joe "Butterball" Tamburro and Harvey Holiday (especially) who turned me on to many of these sounds. Please follow an Honor System by NOT voting on recordings you are unfamiliar with, but I do heartily recommend you get to know all of these recordings, if you love Soul. Proceed and have fun. Tell your friends!
