Interesting, upscale joint with the affluent hipster vibe that places in Portland's Pearl District frequently have. Pricey, with some of their cocktails breaking the sawbuck barrier, but intriguing and damn well made. If you sit at the bar, the bartenders are more than happy to talk about the drink and share some commentary on preferences.

Food is nothing special, particularly considering the prices, although it won't poison you.

I spent part of an evening there last weekend, enjoying a few cocktails, exchanging lies with the bartender, and making a desultory chase of some of the free range skirt that the place is full of.

Well worth a look if you're in the neighborhood, but there are many places in Portland that are more interesting and do less damage to your wallet.

Part of the local McMenamin's chain of bars, pubs, hotels and the like, and full of the usual eclectic ambiance of that group.

The beer is above average, although in my opinion McMenanim's beers are no better than average among the Portland and nearby Oregon craft brewers. They have occasional guest brews but the selection is no better than average of those.

The food is decent, the wait staff is generally good, but what you're coming here for is the street theatre outside the windows, the eye candy inside, the free pool, and the general warm pleasantness of the place.

Retro-hippy dive joint with decent food and a solid collection of local microbrews on tap. They regularly have live music, which runs the gamut of good to bad on the local scene, but generally tending above average. Service ranges from friendly to artificially surly, but is always competent.

Something of a dive, although a pretty mild one, with excellent taps, lousy food and highly variable service, depending on who's working. This has been the starting point of many a Portland pub crawl for me, and as such is the repository of many fine memories.

Not bad for a place that sounds like it's owned by a cut rate superhero.

A small two room bar in what appears to be a converted house, with an eclectic selection of local microbrews on tap and a similarly eclectic atmosphere. The back bar is indifferent to average, and food virtually non-existant. It's a cool, local atmospheric place in a pleasant district of Portland, with a witty, bantering wait staff. Fun place.

Which one?

There are about thirty of them in the Portland area. Some of them are excellent, most are above average, and a few stink.

At the risk of shameless self-promotion, I refer you to this list:

Mediocre to poor food, shoddy service, and by the high standards of Portland, poor taps. This is one of a chain, and it has none of the charm that many Portland brewpubs have. Dropped in after an absence of several years to see if it had improved, and was disappointed, if not surprised, to find it hadn't.

There is something really nice about a place that serves fabulous food and the servers are adept enough to remember you...we couldn't have gone there 3 or 4 times before they started to remember how we take our drinks. As a couple that eats our every night this is not the norm. This place offers the best of everything....excellent food and excellent service. I love Apizza Scholls!

Action Jackson's is a lively little sports bar. It was a lot of fun and the nachos were out of this world.
