An old warehouse on Harrison that has transformed into a climbing gym. It's cool, and if you haven't been before there are classes I think hourly that can certify you to climb and belay in about 30 minutes, and then with a partner you can begin to climb. Climbing is fun, keeps you in the moment (as you need to seek for the next hold or you will fall), and a good workout particularly forearms and back. This location also has cardio equipment and weight machines. One thing I did not like was that one big guy working at the front was a real jerk, and after my interaction with him, he basically told another colleague that he is an a*hole and just doesn't care. That may be so, but through his arrogance he is a poor representation of his employer.

Laser hair removal salon charged me thousands of $$$ over three years and hair not only grew back but sprouted in new places too…

Doesn’t it just sound amazing, a few dollars, a few appointments, a touch of pain and you are hair free forever. Well if you are dark haired and ethnic like myself then you’ve probably spent your youth suffering through creams, waxes, shaving, tweezing and despair.

And now science has brought you a miracle. Well, you know the saying, if it sounds too good to be true, then it is too good to be true. This laser ‘technology’ is exploiting the desperation of thousands of women. As if it weren’t painful enough going through life hairier than most of the men we date, now we get the added bonus of being robbed.

Here’s my experience with one laser clinic in San Francisco, named City Skin and Laser Clinic (111 Maiden Lane, San Francisco CA 94108): Full legs costs $420 per visit, full arms costs $225 per visit, lip and chin costs $85 per visit. According to the clinic, no more than six to eight appointments are required and then you are released from your hairy prison for life.

So, from August 2007 until August 2010, I went every six weeks. It was sheer agony (even with the topical lidocaine that they use to numb the area), but it was going to eliminate embarrassment and self hatred from my life… right?

Three years and SIXTEEN appointments later the results are as follows: The leg hair seems to have weakened somewhat. However the arm and facial hair has not only thickened, but begun to sprout in areas that were previously hair free ! The upper arm, which previously had barely a wisp of fine hairs is now a carpet of think black pubes, my knuckles are hairier than some of the dates I’ve rejected because of their hairy knuckles, and I have started to grow hair on my neck !!!

So, what does my sweet therapist at City Skin and Laser clinic have to say? “Honey, it’s all in your head.”

No, it’s on my arms, hands and face, and the only thing that is in my head is how I have spent a ton of money, endured unbelievable pain and wasted hours of time for something that has not only failed but has made matters worse.

Girls (and guys), don’t waste your time or money on laser hair removal. If you are descended from a rug, then… actually I don’t know how to finish that sentence. How do we live with our aesthetic disadvantage? Anyone who is successfully living a hairy life, please feel free to contact me and let me know how it is you get through life without sinking into a deep, suicidal depression ?

All suggestions, words of encouragement or just effective techniques for killing oneself welcome.

Good old-school barber shop. Sam was leaving for the day when the lobby security dude stopped him to tell him I needed a haircut (while it was obvious, I don't mean he volunteered. I was getting directions to the shop) and Sam open up for me. This is in an office-type building, so don't look for a street-front shop. He went to work, starting with clippers, to scissors, and finishing with a straight razor. I picked this shop after the old Russian with the DTs retired from my old barbershop. On the plus side, Sam has steadier hands...
I would recommend this shop. He got it right the first time. $20. He can chat about most anything.

Really nothing special here. Smallish gym packed into three floors, it doesn't take much to find yourself waiting. Trainers dont seem to be anything special. Equipment is subpar, not only in choice but upkeep. It's clean enough and the low monthly rate is the only appeal here.

This is my absolute favorite spa in the city. It's not a large space by any means but it does offer an outdoor deck and sun roof (for those rare days of sunny, warm weather in SF!). The real appeal for me is that every aesthetician is great! I've been going here since 2005 and never have I left red or blotchy from extractions (and I get them every time). So for facials, this place rocks!

Miguel is a jewel -- not only skilled at his craft but a fine person too. He takes time with you to find out what you want, and really listens, unlike other hairstylists. Does great color too.

Ok so check it out. I've been looking for a good stylist for awhile.. maybe about a year or so. I checked out Frange Blue and what can I say... i got the best haircut i've had in years. Miguel did an awesome job at taking my wants and desires with how much (or little) i wanted to manage my hair and Bam! Ok so maybe cuz ima guy its easy to deal with my hair, but I know ive paid plenty of $$ numerous of times at other salons to other pro's and they just didn't seem to get what i wanted (or needed) Miguel rocks! He could tell what i was after, how i could 'dress' it up when i went out, or just wash and wear it and it still looked great. This is the first time that i can honestly remember, that when I looked at the cut in the mirror at the salon I was like: Wow! thats exactly what i want and I totally love it! Well done indeed!
