They're just upset because we don't accept maple syrup as currency down here.

This is why Florida is now considering requiring Canadian citizens to possess an international drivers license when driving here.

I see this as more lunacy from Gov. Rick Scott, who changed the law to require THREE proofs of residency when renewing your drivers license, all out of Tea Party hysteria regarding illegal immigrants.

A very legitimate concern about living in Florida. Have experienced several of them over the years.

Think of Florida as a giant trailer park and hurricanes as giant tornadoes.

UPDATE Keeping a weather eye open on the latest tropical storm in the Atlantic, and waiting to see where will be Ernesto's blow felt.

(Sorry. Bad pun, I know.)

Average per capita income in Florida in 2010 was $39,272. Average for the United States was 40,584.

Florida would be higher than the US if it did not have Orlando, where the average is 33,000.

Disney World is the largest single-site employer in the US. Its 57,000 employees' average earnings is about 20,000. It employs 20% of workers in Orlando, and the other two theme parks -- Universal and Sea World -- employ 5%.

Utah (32,595) and Idaho (32,257) are two of the lowest earning states. You don't hear complaints about low wages in those states because they don't fit the stereotype of "dumb southerner."

Hurricanes have dissuaded more New Yorkers from moving to Florida than gators, roaches, rednecks, and high humidity combined. Since they think Florida is a single dot on the map, they think all parts of Florida are affected. We don't tell them Jacksonville and Orlando have never been hit by a hurricane. Daytona Beach had not been hit before 2004, when it got three, none of which did serious damage. It has not been hit since.

When northerners come looking to pollute the state with their presence, we tell tall tales that confirm their worst fears. Then we try to direct them to Miami. They wouldn't believe the truth anyway (they know it all), so it's best to contain their damage to one city. Since Miami really does get hurricanes, the hope is they will tell their friends in New York how bad it is.

These are mainly clustered in the Northern (more culturally southern) part of the state, but can also be found among the megachurches of suburban Tampa, Orlando, and Miami.

Tropical climate is a feature, not a problem. I love being able to do things outdoors twelve months of the year. It beats being trapped indoors almost half the time, November through March. I love picnicking in January, while northerners are shoveling snow.

Average auto insurance in FL, $1,672, is slightly above the US average, 1,567. More expensive states include NJ, NY, MA, DE, MD, PA, MI, NV, OR, WA, OK, and KY.

It seems high because well-known majors double their rates so they can advertise "up to 50% off." If you want normally priced insurance, buy from a company that does not advertise on TV.

The problem isn't alligators, it's people whose knowledge of nature came entirely from watching television.

Much of Florida's native plant life was cut down by the timber companies about 100 years ago, and the forests were replaced with non-native species. There used to be a lot of diversity once, but unfortunately, much of that is gone.

I happen to think that the trees here in Florida are just the right height. There I agree with Mitt about his homestate!!!
