UPDATE: Which is the correct pronunciation: Di-MADG-eeo or Di-MAHG-eo? Does anybody out there know?! I've been waiting for an answer.....I hate to admit it, but I've never understood the meaning of this nickname. It doesn't do justice to sich a unique athlete, who tried to play his best game ever every single day - thinking that someone out there came to watch him who had never seen him play before, and he didn't want to let them down. I really like the way he kept his personal life so private right to the end. What kind of nickname could suffice for this man? Jumpin' Joe Dimaggio is even worse. (by the way, you baseball scholars out there, please settle a question for me - did he pronounce his name Di-MADG-eeo or Di-MAHG-eo? I've heard it both ways all my life, but never heard Joe pronounce it himself.

Meant as a reference to the graceful, powerful and fast clipper ships of the nineteenth century, it is perfectly suited to this graceful and powerful athlete.
