Who Are You (The Who)

"I woke up in a SoHo Doorway,a policeman knew my name"...what a great opening to a great Who song ! Sadly,I bought that album new just months before Moon left the building.

Ironically right after this one came out the Who lost any sense of who they were and never recovered. Of course that's largely attributable to the fact it was the last album made by the original foursome.

This was Pete Townshend's answer to Generation X's YOUR GENERATION, an obnoxious and pretentious ditty sung by a relatively talented bourgeoise brat who called himself Billy Idol and wanted to come off as King of The Punks.It was the best thing THE WHO had done for years and was a fitting encore for Moon The Loon as it was finished just before he was.Note: There is no THE WHO without Keith Moon and John Entwistle.

I never really got into the Who or became a fan, but I always respected them, and a few of their songs were absolutely fantastic. This particular song I really didn't like from the start, and it grew progressively more annoying with each listen (that high-pitched chorus of "Whooo, Whooo...Whoo, Whoo" always got on my nerves for some reason). Moon, a phenomenal drummer, sadly died around the time this record was released, and the Who replaced him with Kenny Jones. I was friends with a guy at the time who was a BIG Who fan (I'm embarrassed to say that I helped him steal the movie poster from a theatre that was playing the documentary "The Kids Are Alright" during that period) and he wanted to go see them in concert when they came to NY to play at Madison Square Garden around then. One of the first songs I knew by this band, and the last hit they had with Moon. I've heard it so much that it's hard to objectively rate it, I'm long since sick of it, and I'm one of those people who actually prefers the pre -"Tommy" Who, though of course the later stuff is hardly dreck. It's a good tune, I kind of like the way it starts...Ever notice that Daltrey's voice had REALLY changed by this point- he started out with a softer kind of voice on things like "I Can't Explain" or even the things on "The Who Sell Out" and then he had the powerful voice he's best known for. By the time of this tune, the voice was a lot rougher which is understandable given concert after concert of very loud stuff. The first time I heard this, when I was about 11, his voice sounded good, but it also sounded like one of those monsters from Sesame Street had gone on a five day whiskey and cocaine binge...
