Even if you liked this unwashed pile of shit, how could you get past the "music"? Seriously, THE worst drums in music. She has a four piece and uses two.

Gotta love the White Stripes. Incredibly quirky and at times down right bizarre, still always fresh and fun to listen to.

This is my revised opinion: they're mainstream at this point, and aren't appropriate to this category.  In addition, they started off with an interesting premise, but have shown they don't have much staying power.  In fact, their recent music has been pretty average.

Simplicity at its best! When the music scene was getting over-produced and fake sounding these guys brought us pure, unbridled, ROCK- and they just keep doing better.

The guitarist and singer, Jack White, is a powerful force.  Watch the DVD “Under Blackpool Lights” to see and hear his energy unleashed.  The sounds of Detroit, his hometown, come through strongly in his playing.  Too bad Meg’s drumming is so weak.

I tend to like their well- known tracks more than the obscure ones, but the two can certainly play. I also like the fact that this is one of the few contemporary successful rock acts ( like Wilco and a few others) that draws on blues, country, rock, and "Americana," as evidenced by White's appearance in the Cold Mt. film and soundtrack- I feel that a weakness of many alternative or punk bands today is an ignorance of the roots and history of the past. It's telling that most of my favorite ' alternative' acts, like this pair, Afghan Whigs, and The Replacements are bands with respect and inspiration for the past- Guess I'm just a musical conservative though not just an oldies partisan as traderboy has mentioned in his fine review below. The range traderboy alludes to is certainly evident, and in my view this is of course a plus.

They're not the greatest but they're a good two person band.

The White Stripes have taken uninformed guff from nearly every crevice of the almighty music machine, answering their detractors with efforts that have been MORE inventive, MORE infectious, and MORE respected (all the while remaining true to their "lo-fi" blues roots). If you're into big production and power chords, then a band like this is OBVIOUSLY not gonna be something to admire or follow; if you've grown weary of the shrink-wrapped schtick of the corporate weathervanes, then you've probably been following them (and few others) for the last couple of years. The gripers' chorus never wavers: "they're not consistent, they're all over the map!".....THAT'S THE POINT, DAMNIT!!! The fact that they can go from fuzzy punk to Dolly Parton and back into goth pop during an eight-minute stretch shows something the short-attention spanners can't grapple with: RANGE. Every release so far shows it, with ELEPHANT being one of the top discs of the last 25 years. Now, should they be renting airliner... Read more

probably the best band of the last 5 years. good to see little white kids listening to the blues again and making music from it.

The only thing that keeps me from rating the White Stripes a 5 star band is their live show. Jack White, when he rips into that guitar of his is incredible, but Meg...well...it works on the album, but two people just aren't big enough to fill a largish venue if the drummer isn't top notch. That being said, Elephant is one of the truly great rock and roll albums of the last couple of years. Any band that can go from punk rippers like Seven Nation Army and the bluesy swagger of Ball and a Buiscuit to Beatles-esque pop melodies like You've Got Her In Your Pocket and cover a Burt Bacharach tune (I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself), all on one album, has really got something good going on.

I liked Seven Nation Army and that other song they recently came out with (can't remember the title). Then I looked into them and I hated them. I found nothing appealing about their music. 2 stars for original style (or should I say de stijl).

Hey there, Jack and Meg: I love your style. First I thought you were brother and sister, but apparently, your divorced ex-man and ex-wife. I think you two are intelligent and stylish. But what do you do when you have so much talent? Of course: you make an excellent song called Seven Nation Army. By the way, Jack: you're pretty handsome...you can always come to visit me someday :d Love you guys, Helene D.M.

This is the kind of band where I didn't mind their two songs that were played on T.V., but then felt extremely stupid when I bought their c.d. because I found out that those were the only two good songs on the whole dang thing. Pure frustration. I'll take my $14.99 plus tax anyday.

If you were to be completely honest with yourself and ignore what other people think of the band, you would hopefully come to the conclusion that they suck. Sure it is screaming music that helps you get out your anger but the bottom line is they are not talented!

I'm very much torn between giving them a 4 and a 3, but having considered it overall 3 sounds about right just now. they are an original band, a two piece, drums and guitar, no bass. minimalism. jack white's quirky wierdness is fantastic the look of this band is great, (always wearing the red, black and white). When you first hear them they sound great but after listening to both white blood cells and elephant i have concluded that there is a fromula to the music, (meg's boom-crash drumming and big guitar slabs) there is innovation else where but even this is repeated, it almost like both albums are copies of each other, hell dead leaves... and theres no home for you here are practically the same song. but saying that 7nation army is great as is hotel yorba they do have some great ideas and things but just don't quite cut it for me.

I can see why the singer hides his face in the videos. Have you ever seen a picture of the guy? His face makes my skin crawl. So does his voice. But you have to admit they have succesfully combined singing with whining to create a sound that makes me want to hurt people.

I've only heard the album Elephant, but that album really blew me away. I wasn't expecting it to live up to all the hype, but believe me, it is THAT good. I think this band is the new Nirvana. Their music is rather simple and straightforward, but there's just a certain magic to it that just really hits you. They are heavily influenced by '70s hard rock but yet they somehow seem to have their own style. They're just one of those bands that just hook you.

They sound like the best band in the world for about three songs, then they start to get annoying in a big hurry. Really, try to listen to a whole album at one sitting. Like most things, they are only good in small doses.

Overrated and disposable. Its kind of refreshing to hear the White Stripes on the radio, but they may have already overstayed their welcome.

Perhaps the only band in the "Garage Rock Revival" movement that stayed true to their roots. It's about time they hit RIA's list. I only have the first album--I'm forcing myself to follow them chronologically. Meg & Jack have certainly cleaned up their act to become more media-compatible. But I prefer "Jimmy the Exploder" over "Seven Nation Army". The earlier records are so raw, so real. Seldom have I heard such magnificent noise.
