Sun Oct 12 2008At least the internet as we know it today, it wasn't that long ago. I guess the first sign to me that the internet was really starting to take off was when I went to the movies and noticed most of the movie posters listed websites associated with the movie.

Wed May 28 2008Yes, and some computers plugged into your TV as well, like the Commodore 64. Actually, it is the WWW that's new, the internet has been around for a while, as well as modems where you could dila into bulletin boards, etc.

Tue May 27 2008Yes and RIA was done on stone tablets. I remember when there was first talk about the internet and I was amazed and wondered what it would be like.

Tue May 27 2008I grew up without it. I'm thirty-four, and the Internet didn't become widespread until I was in my early 20s.

Fri May 16 2008My 9 year old's favourite joke is "Before electricity, they had to play video games in the dark." Both of my kids have never known what it was like to not have access to the net.. I'm struck from time to time that they just assume that the answer to almost any question is available by googling the subject or by taking a quick look at Wikipedia. If I want to show them a TV show or sporting event from my youth, its almost always available with a little looking on YouTube. Want a pop song for the MP3 player, get it on line. I'm astounded by all of this technology, they think its normal.UPDATE: We now have a 20 something intern in our office who thinks its hilaious that in the not too distant past, I could e-mail some of my co-workers but couldn't e-mail others because we were not on compatible platforms. I haven't told her yet about how exciting we all thought the fax machine was when we first got it.

Fri May 25 2007I remember having no internet for most of my childhood. We didn't get the internet until I was about 15-16.

Thu May 24 2007I'm only 16, but I'm pretty new to the internet (I got it in the last year or so). I am as shocked as most of you guys at the laziness and the general internet dependence of today's youth. It's very sad that old traditions are being phased out... and you here really sickening (to an old-fashioned person like myself) things like "He asked me out over MSN". What has happened??? I'm all for a RIA binge or a YouTube or Wookieepedia trawl, but I know my limits, and hearing stories such as this bring a nostalgic tear to my eye...

Wed Jun 21 2006We got along just fine without it.I'm glad it's here, though,as an alternative to corporate controlled media!

Tue Jun 20 2006I definitely didn't start using the internet until my teenage years, so I remember what growing up without it was like. It is an incredibly useful tool as an adult, but I can see how it would be less healthy for younger children. There are computer programs for kids to use that don't require the internet.

Tue Jun 20 2006WTF did I do before I had stuff like this to occupy my time?

Wed Nov 30 2005I will say this. Had I had the World Wide Web and Google while I was in College, I would have been a Rhodes scholar. 90% of my study difficulties was getting access to information. Of course, if I cut and pasted some of the lunacy in RateitAll into my term papers, Temple University would probably have told me that all my classes were being held at the Byberry Mental Hospital.

Sat Nov 05 2005Yes, and sad to say, I can remember back to a distant time when there were no fax machines, DVD players, or even VCRs. I can remember when kids took Typing in school using typewriters instead of taking Keyboarding and using PCs; I can remember a time before cell phones were common everyday conveniences; I can remember back to a time when girls were not allowed to wear pants or jeans to school. I'm so ancient.

Sat Nov 05 2005Oh yes I remember this. Back when computer users were stuck with BBS's to get in touch with one another. (I tried to suggest BBS's for this list, but I was mistranslated, I believe) I used to run a Bulleting Board back before the internet became a household word, and I miss those days. The internet's just not as personal, somehow. But then.....who doesn't miss the good old days, eh??

Fri Jul 22 2005The majority of my life has been without the internet. we have had it in our lives for about six years. we tend NOT to get new stuff right away and then it was WEBTV for a year at first. I do like the internet and am willing to spend the extra bucks for it. I especially love how you can look up just about anything and email all over the world.

Wed Jul 20 2005I DO remember that! I remember also the first few times on the internet, when I was on Prodigy and using message boards (they called them Bill Boards. And I discovered online games. And I also discovered crazy, horny, lonely old men. Ugh. Guess things haven't changed much.

Wed Jul 20 2005I was in high school in 1993, and i dont remember their was an internet. It mostly came out in the mid 1990's. I do remember the industrial arts CNC machining computer developing a virus in 1992.

Wed Jul 20 2005Although it was still in its early stages, I remember before I used the internet in sixth grade. Before then, I got all my information from books (yes! I saught out my own knowledge as a kid! ^_^), television, and other sources such as my parents. Of course, I think the internet is a totally awesome invention that has revolutionized knowledge, communication and the world itself.

Wed Jul 20 2005Before that chowderhead Al Gore invented the internet, no one even liked computers. Now people spend all day on the dang things.

Wed Jul 20 2005I'm starting to miss that time. Computers are such a part of work and daily life it has become an unhealthy dependency. The promise of technology was that it would 'streamline work and bring more information to everyone.' The truth is people work longer hours and kids read less now than ever before.

Tue Jul 19 2005I'm a member of the first generation of kids to have grown up with the Internet, but even at my young age I do remember when it didn't exist. I started using computers around the same time I was learning to read- about 1990-91. It wasn't until 1995 that we got internet access. So, yes, I'm old enough to remember when there was no Internet- at least the last four or five years before it was invented.
