West Bend 77203 Electric Can Opener

Bought this because I have problems with manual can openers as I have fibromyalgia and mild arthritis. Read many reviews and this seemed best. Works great as long as you can get the lip of the can high enough for it to touch the blade - a little tricky and annoying but it works once you get the hang of it. It's bigger than I expected but does taller cans. Has a replaceable blade which I guess no other brand offers.

More than adequate power, and nicely finished (in red), but like most red-heads, it's a little quirky. . .The opener tends to shread the edges of certain cans' labels, and occasionally those bits of paper end up in the can's contents. No big deal, in most respects, if one is able to pick all of the paper debris out of the food before emptying the contents into a cooking pan, etc. But, there's also the unpleasant thoughts of who handled that particular can's label during the manufactruing, packing, shipping, & shelf-stocking/checking-out process, plus how many shoppers may have also handled that can before it was purchased? Also, the operator must manually align the magnetic lid feature as they line up the opener's cutting wheel w/ the lip of the can. Kinda clumsy, and poor design, in my opinion. . .

Had recently bought a more expensive can opener - a brushed chrome one from williams sonoma. A month later, it no longer worked. Rather than getting it fixed, we bought this one. Yes!, it's not metal, but looks fine....and it works!!!

I never thought, I would begin a quest for a "reliable" can opener, but there I was. Nothing more frustrating than a simple thing that does not work. SAGA OF THE OLD CORDLESS CAN OPENER: I owned one cordless can opener that I had for years...and then it stopped charging. I bought it's replacement and well, it did not live up to it's predessessor's performance and stopped charging less than a year after its purchase. I had two corded older ones that occassionally worked, but I found I often had to resort to our manual back up one. So I started looking around, reading reviews and found few cordless ones today last that long. In fact it seems my experience was a common one. So I gave up on the cordless ones and started my search for a corded one. Great can opener. It really is the best product available for the price. Quiet, fast and tall so it opens everything. Highly recommended.
