    C. J. Lyons, in her second book in the series, brings back her four female protagonists: Amanda Mason, doing her last year as a medical student on rotations at Angels of Mercy Medical Center in Pittsburgh; Gina Freeman, her roommate; Lydia, an ER attending; Nora, described as a "by the book charge nurse," all sympathetic and strong woman but each vulnerable in her own way. The author presents a medical mystery which presents a challenge to her gutsy protagonists, who must try to find the answers before it threatens the life of one of them. Amanda, at twenty-five years of age, is a long way from home, but coming into her own. Gina Freeman, a third-year emergency medicine resident, is still recovering from the trauma she sustained at the end of the prior book, "Lifelines," and trying to duck her EMS rotation after being shot at during her first time riding with an ambulance crew, as well as dealing with commitment issues when Detective Jerry Boyle presses his marriage proposal. I love how Cj's writing so cleverly intertwines the lives of the four women in these books. If you have not read Lifelines, I highly suggest it as well! Amanda, who is trying to finish up med school, has a story that pulls you in and has you wanting to somehow help her out. I felt I could not put it down. I have come to love reading about these women and can not wait for a third one!

I won't bother recapping--that's been done. This is a good addition to the series, and once again Ms. Lyons has created characters we can't wait to get to know, but it's not as good as Lifelines--in that sense, this book was a bit of a disappointment. If, however, you pick this book up first, then read Lifelines, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised. I guess I just expected more from the second book.

Amanda Mason is struggling to finish out medical school so that she can go into pediatrics. She's currently on a neurology rotation under Dr. Lucas Stone. This might even be enjoyable, considering how much she looks up to him and enjoys his company, except for one thing: she's started having some odd symptoms (clumsiness, weakness, numbness), and she's afraid he'll notice and decide that she isn't fit for duty. The problem becomes much larger than her, however, when two other patients with the same symptoms die, and a third slips into a coma. Amanda has to figure out what's going on with her and the other girls before the third one dies--and before Amanda follows her. But Amanda's friends, who are ignorant of Amanda's connection to the mysterious cases, are also caught up in their own problems. Nora's being stalked by an old boyfriend who won't give up; Lydia is trying to keep a homeless boy from being taken away from his sick great-grandmother, and Gina can't seem to get over a past t...
