Three weeks ago Utopia Salon closed it's doors for business after 9 years! As the former owner of the salon, I am saddened about this, but also excited about the future, for not only myself, but for all of the former sytlists and colorists that worked at my salon who all moved onto new salons! I want to thank each and every one of them for making our salon the salon that it was. Every day we took great pleasure and care in living up to our name (Utopia) that it would be the type of atmosphere that not only clients would find inviting and welcoming, but also for all of the people that worked at Utopia Salon. I will miss you all! Lastly, but certainly not least...THANK you to all of our wonderful clients (many of whom have decided to follow their stylists/colorists) to their new surroundings. I myself have relocated my business at a salon called Level 4 salon, under the name Lendoesmyhair Again thank you everyone you all truly made Utopia, Utopia! ................... Read more

I went onto CitySearch to check out a few salons and happened upon Utopia's listing. After reading positive review after positive review, I scheduled an appointment conveniently on line with the owner and stylist Len. I was really impressed how Len took the time to have an in depth consultation with me, not the typical being told from the stylist what the client needed to do, and not being given a choice! He worked with me and said "it's your hair and you should be comfortable with the style and color(not to mention be in love with it!) Well, I have NEVER been in love with my hair until I saw Len! He gave me the cutest cut(lots of layers and movement!) and the highlight he gave me, Wow! I have received so many compliments already! He used three different colors (2 blonde shades and one darker color) which he said would create a lot of depth! It has! I love the salon as well, the only sad thing is, he told me he was CLOSING his salon after 9 years! But he assured me that he would wor... Read more

It was my very first time going to an upper-scale hair salon and after this experience, I'm never going back to a Super Cuts again. Let's just say that every time I come across a reflective surface, I can't help but look into it. Trust me, I'm not much of a looker, but damn, did I like what they did to my hair. William is such a sweetheart and you can really tell he cares about what he does by watching him work. He paid high attention to detail and really took his time, unlike some others who just chop away without care. William is truly a Michaelangelo with trimming shears. Can't wait to book my next appointment!

Oh my goodness, i just got back from getting my hair done by Billy!!! he is truly an artist!!! I am one of those people who always went to the really cheap places where i got a crappy 15 dollar haircut. Every time, i left completely unsatisfied. this was the first time in my life that i left bouncing with joy. I look amazing, i am a completely new person all because of Billy's work! He did exactly what i wanted and more.

I gave my daughter a birthday/college spring break treat at Utopia Salon. She had a strong wish to get a perm so I set up an appt. with their perm expert Billy. It was his opinion that her long, straight fine hair type would require a considerably layered haircut and would need daily blowdry/styling to manage a "smaller rod" curl. Leaving the decision to my daighter, she might have gone ahead -- but Billy finally said he really didn't think she'd be happy. We appreciated his honesty and dedication to keeping his clientele satisfied with their final results. She decided against the perm. We still had a gift card to spend so on the spot Billy graciously arranged a highlight with Heng, a master colorist. She was fun and did a wonderful job. My daughter left the shop looking very naturally sun-kissed and feeling very content. While waiting for her, I asked about and got a relaxing pedicure with lemon-mint soak/scrub and coconut massage -- mmmmm! Hello Springtime! Thanks Utopia Salon!

I've been getting my hair cut by Billy Aldrich for a few years now and he continues to amaze me with how skilled he is. He's done a perfect job shaping my hair through all of its different styles; from perms to pompadours, Billy knows exactly what he's doing! Outside of the great job that Billy does, the rest of the staff at Utopia is also very accommodating, friendly, and talkative.

I love Utopia Salon! I was a hair model for William. He had never met me before, but understood exactly what I wanted for an overall look. He helped me find the perfect color that fit my vision. He did such a great job on my color, that I was dying to go back the next day for him to cut it too! I love my edgy, fun, styled look! I would trust him with any length or look. Thank you William! I will be back! Thanks, Becky

he's going to give you the best advice about what's right for your hair and won't steer you wrong. He's the most amazing colorist and will alway make you feel great about your hair. He'll help you select the style that will work for your personality, looks and hair type. You'll love your look. I promise. I've been a loyal client of Paco's for over 20 years, at least that many hair style changes (long, short and everything in between) and at least 5 color changes over those years. And he also gives the best neck massage while washing your hair.

I was a random walk in waiting for my red eye home and was fortunate to have stumbled upon this salon. William is wonderful! He took the time to create a style that is great for both my work and social life (not an easy balance), and I literally told him to do whatever he thought was best. Almost more importantly, it's been a style I can recreate myself. An accomplishment unto itself! I'm happy with the style, and my brutally honest coworkers and friends have also been really complimentary :). Overall, I was really impressed with his talent and concern about both the style and my own capacity to recreate (as well as my morning time limitations). Finally, not only did I get a great haircut/style, but William was a delight to talk to during the session. While we all know that a good cut is the goal, it's really nice to have a fun experience while sitting around in a smock. Looks like I'll be getting my haircut on the west coast from now on, thanks!

My first visit to Utopia was a walk in and I have gone back for all of my haircuts ever since. William is amazing! I have had him for cuts and styling and he always does a fantastic job. Not only is he sweet and fun to talk to but he is also super passionate about his job and making you look your best. I have recommended him to all of my friends. The salon is beautiful and the staff is great. It's always a nice relaxing experience everytime I go. Definitely check this place out and ask for William!

Over 20 years ago, a friend recommended that I set up a consultation with PACO RIVERA, as I had extremely damaged hair. Paco restored my hair back to health via color correction technique, hairstyling skill, by convincing me to work with my hair?s natural characteristics (foregoing chemical straightening) & to regularly use the hair care products which he recommends. As time goes by & fashions change, Paco changes both the style & color of my hair. I?ve had long brown hair, short platinum blond hair, medium length auburn hair, as well as other combinations. Paco is a truly gifted colorist. Currently, he is mixing five colors together (shades of red, gold & a bit of brown) which work to give my hair a more natural look, as opposed to a one tone flat color. I particularly enjoy the way the colors in my hair respond to light. Most of the time, the interplay of light on my hair color is subtle. Then there are those spectacular moments in time when the sunlight hits my hair at a ce... Read more

This is my first time to visit Utopia, used to go another salon on Sutter St. I chose William from the roster of stylist from their online booking because of positive reviews that I read here on citysearch. I told him that I was ready for a change and want to have my hair "chopped off". He did not disappoint, I left with a very cute haircut that earned compliments from everyone. He was also easy to talk to and listened to what I wanted. I love the online booking and I loved the overall experience.

I have been seeing Len for over 10 years. He is consistent (which is so important!) friendly and a good conversationalist, and to put it plainly the guy simply knows how to cut hair! Before I began seeing Len, I was going to the typical barber, but that changed when my girlfriend flipped over the bad cut the barber had given me and I never went back. I have followed Len to MANY salons over the years (until he opened his own) and don't regret it!. I have been trying to get my girlfriend to go to Len but she is loyal to her stylist, but who knows? maybe someday. Anyway go see Len if you want a great expereince, I know I enjoy my visit each and every time!

I recently went to see Billy at Utopia for a perm. I had chemically straightened my hair a while ago, so Billy decided to do a strand test to make sure it could take the perm. Unfortunately, it didn't but I really appreciated Billy's professionalism and honesty about this. I ended up with a haircut (layers) and I loved it! Not only was I impressed with Billy and Utopia, but my husband (who went with me) was as well. They offer a level of service rarely seen in many businesses today. My only regret was that I was unable to tip Billy with my credit card since they only accept cash or checks for tips (sorry Billy!). I definitely look forward to returning to Utopia. Thanks Billy!

I went to Utopia to get a body wave and a trim from Billy. They were very accomidating when I arrived and the salon has a nice ambiance. My cut on the other hand, is about half an inch uneven in the front and much shorter than a trim would imply! I found this out only because the perm he gave me makes me look like a poodle and have now straightened it. I've always been skeptical about new stylists and this experience gave me yet another wake up call- be skeptical of city search commentary! Now, I have to pay for another stylist to fix my hair after already spending over $200 on a student's budget.

...my hair is in the best condition ever! Not only does he give me the BEST color and cut in town, but he is also a great and down-to-earth guy. Having lived in LA, NYC, and Chicago, I have experienced many great stylists at some of the best salons and I truly believe Len is top notch! I have been going to Len for over a year and always walk out of the salon satified 100%+. I also find it impressive that Len manages to find equally talented and passionate stylists who are highly trained to work in his salon. Don't waste your time trying out those other salons in SF (like I once did, unfortunately)...head over to Utopia...you'll be really happy you did!!

Like a lot of others, I've been trying to find a hair salon and a stylist that i can rely on to give me what i want. The ambiance was very friendly, and the prices were surprisingly reasonable. I was very pleasantly surprised by the fact that they have convenient online-booking for appointments - something that all places should implement! It made the experience that much easier. The appointment was taken and finished in a very timely manner. My hair wasn't the easiest the deal with and rarely sits the way I want it to, but after communicating the issues I had been experience to my stylist - William, he patiently took care of everything in a very timely and effective manner. He's very professional, genuinely sweet, and I appreciated all the helpful suggestions that he has given ( that I will definitely be doing my best to follow). Overall, I loved the results and the experience and can't wait to return to him after my hair has become a bit healthier so I can decide what to do with... Read more

I'm very picky when it comes to my hair, and until I found Utopia I used to hate having to go in for a haircut because I would always be disappointed in the results. I've seen Billy for both hair cuts and a perm and he is great at both of them! He listened to what I wanted--the length, tightness of the curls, bangs, etc., and he also gave me input and his own ideas as well as styling tips and I've been satisfied with the results every time. He's also very personable and fun to chat with and clearly knows what he is doing. Now I don't mind cutting my hair at all because I know it will turn out great! Everyone else at Utopia is also really friendly and the atmosphere of the salon itself is very welcoming and comfortable.

I do not speak English well, but he listen to what I want and he did it. The highlights look so natural and the cut magnifique! If you are looking for a beautiful new look try Len he is wonderful, I keep going back and now when I go back to Europe everyone asks me where I get my hair done! Thanks Len for my beautiful hair! I love the salon too! Its very comfortable and nice art!

I have long Asian hair and I wanted a change by cutting my hair short (shoulder length). I'm pretty picky with my hair. I been to different salons in Seattle and I was never satisfied with my haircut. Until I went to William. He really istened to me what I was looking for. He took his time on cutting my hair and he has a great sense of humor. At first I was nervous to cut my hair really short, but, William did an EXCELLENT job. I love my hair now. Also, the staff are really friendly and the place is so lay back. I would highly recommend to go see William!!!!

I don?t think there are enough superlatives to describe Tony?s talent and dedication. Before coming to Utopia, I was very fickle with hairstylists, and I would wander all over the city to find ?the one.? Rest assured I have found him, and he truly embodies everything a hairstylist should be. Tony is a great listener, but like every great artist, he?s also a visionary. He?s somehow able to process the few bits of information I offer in terms of how I would like my haircut to look like, and he creates a style that far surpasses my expectations. His creations are modern yet very customized to my facial features and hair texture. Moreover, Tony?s attention to detail is unparalleled, and he always stays with me way beyond the one hour mark so that I walk out with picture-perfect hair. The salon's decor is minimalist yet welcoming, and the staff is always ready to answer any requests you may have. I understand that for a lot of people, going to a new hairstylist can be a nerve-wracking ex... Read more

My stylist : Kenny. Hair cut price: $100. Result: AWSOME!! First of all, I was looking for a hair stylist who knows Asian hair for long. I chose Kenny to cut my hair because so many ppl love Kenny on the City search. I brought some pictures and drawings that shows what I want for my hair. Even though I can't speak English very well, he listened carefully and he understood what I want. I think this is really plus because most hair stylists don't listen, and even they don't look at the picture that you bring. Secondly, The result is perfect and really AWSOME. I'm so happy, so I called my friend who is also looking for a great hair stylist, and she said she will make an appointment soon. Finally, about the price, it was inexpensive! The Utopia Salon website tells you hair cut price is from $55~, so I expected it's gonna be arround $175~. But actually it was ONLY $100 ! You know ecperienced high level stylist usually charge a lot. Kenny is very experienced and he has great skill, but p... Read more

After doing so much heavy research on where to get a good hair-cut, I finally came across Utopia Salon. My girlfriend went in first to try it out. Tony was her hair stylist and it came out absolutely gorgeous!! Since we live in the Peninsula, it was hard to travel to SF every few weeks for a haircut, so we tried looking for good ones locally. Being that Tony was what we based haircuts on, it seemed there was no one at all who could possibly compare to his work. There then came a point when it was my time to get a haircut, so I decided to make the trip out to SF and see Tony. I also took my Mom along. We both were treated like VIP guests. Everyone is really warm and welcoming, and we were offered different beverages from tea to wine. I told Tony that I wanted layers with more bounce. Tony also listened to everything I wanted before doing anything, and relayed what he envisioned he was going to do. I really appreciated that. He was very friendly and kept up a good conversation while he... Read more

I had been looking for a stylist for some time after having moved to the city from the east coast. I was hesitant at first, because I knew I would need a haircut (read: significant chop off) as my hair was badly damaged from my neglect and all the treatments I've put it through. But all my hesitation was completely unwarranted. The atmosphere in Utopia is very inviting and friendly and ridiculously relaxing; I almost fell asleep, while being shampooed. They are always punctual and waiting for you (glass of wine in hand). Tony put me at ease upon first meeting, and I've never looked back. From the first visit, my hair looked healthy and radiant. He gave me a cut/style that suited my face and my lifestyle (i.e., easy upkeep and low maintenance). Now, I'll never go anywhere else. Do yourself a favor, come see Tony at Utopia and let him re-define a little part of you. well its been a little over 3 months since i saw billy for body waves and a cut. billy talked me through the process of the body waves, as it was my first time, and they came out better than i had ever imagined! even though i initially got the body waves in order to have more volume when i blew my hair out, the curl was (and still is) so beautiful, i find myself leaving my hair wavy more than straight! the cut was also one of the best i have ever gotten and my day spent at the salon was nothing short of amazing. billy was a joy to chat with and i am so excited to see him again in two weeks when i return to the bay area!! i have finally found my permanent stylist :)

I have "asian" hair (well, the fact that I'm Asian helps). Thick, a lot of it. Hard to style. I was a tramp salon hopper. Going from place to place, abandoning stylist after stylist who would cut my hair in a way that stuck out at weird angles or would simply give up and trim me to a mop. Then I met Shirley. She knows hair. Not just Asian hair. But all hair. And she worked miracles with me, to where my wife will not permit me to go with anyone else. I have hair crises when she goes on vacation. When I was in public office, before any major event, I visited Shirley. Before I go on TV, I go to Shirley. She has a sweet personality, but all professional. She understands what the customer wants, will suggest what she thinks works best, but will not impose her will on you as so many stylists try to do -- unless you want her to. Try her. You'll love her.

William Strange, Utopia Salon's newest addition has the skills of a seasoned professional. From the moment you enter the Salon, the staff could not be more than attentive, offering tasty beverages before you glide over the polished wood floors, past new and emerging artists' work that lines the walls. A bright and airy salon with a buzz, which sets the tone for the magic William is about to perform on your locks. I cannot recommend William more highly - his cutting and blowout skills are superb. But beware, you may be hounded by fellow work colleagues after returning from lunch exclaiming "Love the Hair, Where did you get it done?" Kudos to Utopia for snapping William up.

I had my first perm 2 years ago at a local salon - missed the volume, not so much the lousy service and unflattering results. Moral of that short story: do thorough research! I stumbled upon Utopia salon on a google search for a perm specialist. I found great reviews for Billy and he definitely lived up to his reputation. He offered honest and professional advice/suggestions without shooting my ideas down. FYI: if your hair isn't already layered and you're interested in a perm, it is highly likely that your hair will have to be cut before permed...this = more $$$ on top of quite a bit to begin with. I must admit to being a little surprised by the transformation of my flat, dimensionless hair into massive voluminous curls. As Billy assured me, after 2 days, much relaxing had occurred and I'm now left with very flattering softer yet still noticeable waves. As much as I enjoyed Billy's genuine, mellow demeanor and humor on top of his meticulousness, I left him without a cent of gr... Read more

I visited Utopia a couple of weeks ago for the first time. After reading all these wonderful reviews, I had to go into experience this place myself. My stylist was Billy. I appreciated the fact that he took the initiative to make recommendations to me because not every stylist does that. I also like the fact that not only is the stylist the one that cuts your hair, but also the one that shampoos it. I've been to others where they shuffle you around like an assembly line. Billy was very friendly and gave me great cut. He didn't cut more than I ask! Plus, afterwards, he gave me a pointer as to how I can style my do' at home (I got a layered cut). In short, it was a pleasant visit. I will definitely be back and may even try one of Billy's perms. I think the only negative comment I have was that I was not offered a drink until I was seated in the salon chair.

After reading all the great reviews, I decided to make an appointment with Billy to get my first body wave/perm. I've had stick-straight hair all my life, and was anxious about ending up with a really crazy perm.. but Billy was extremely attentive to what I wanted and made it easy for me to feel like I was in good hands. The rest of the staff at Utopia was also very courteous and friendly. In the end, the perm looked great, but unfortunately my hair didn't take in the perm very well and started to straighten out soon after. When I went back, Billy worked with my hair and redid the perm to make sure that I got the results that I wanted. The perm looks great once again, and my hair is no longer straightening out! I am very satisfied with the results, and although I think the salon is a little pricey, it is definitely well worth it with the excellent customer service and excellent results. Thanks again, Billy!

Billy gives the GREATEST cut in the city. I've been following him since his days at 77, and I don't regret his move to Utopia. Not only is the customer service fabulous and personal, the men are nice to look at, you get a glass of wine (which leads to such bold haircut proclamations as "take it all off!"), and you walk out feeling like a million bucks. Billy's been in the high fashion styling business for over 10 years, and it shows.

Expect the unexpected! I can't recall how many times I've stepped into a salon hoping the person "knows" how to cut and style my hair, and leaving disappointed with the same haircut - but shorter. That's why I was AMAZED by Shirley's technique and eye for style!! She performed a unique method of using a razor blade instead of ordinary scissors to create more texture and volume to my hair. I couldn't believe how much better it looked! Definitely ask for Shirley if you want more than your average haircut!!!

I just returned from Utopia salon. I'm from the Washington DC area, I travel for a living and I needed a haircut. I found Utopia on line and read the reviews and thought I'd try it. I scheduled the appointment with KENNY and I'm so glad I did. I love my haircut!!!! He kept my style but made it 100% better. He gave me a haircut that framed my face. He designed the haircut for ME...He isn't a haircutter...He is a hair artist. He even taught me how to dry it so I can get the same 'just out of the salon look'. I'm so happy with the style. My wife and I just relocated here from the East Coast and we used CitySearch while in New York, and decided it was time to put CitySearch to the test on the West Coast as well. While trying to find all of the important things you need to find in a new city(doctor, dentist, and above all a good stylist!) My wife and I happened to find Utopia Salon on line. After reading the almost endless reviews I was the test project for both of us(my wife made me see Len first) He did a great job on my hair!(better than our old stylist back in New York!) so then my wife saw Len as well. He gave her a great cut, and amazing blond highlights(the color looks so natural no one knows what she had done, but she gets compliments almost on a daily basis!) Len made me and my wife feel welcome and comfortable in his salon, he listened to what we both wanted, made haircare product suggestions and overall it was a GREAT experience! We both LOVE the vibe of the salon(comfortable, yet upscale) cool music, great ... Read more

After looking at many salon web sites I happened onto Utopia's web site(and after having read the reviews listed on CitySearch) I decided to give this salon a try. I am a student, so I have to be careful with my money(there's not a lot of it!) so I was also budget conscience. I asked what the master and senior stylists at this salon charge and it simply was over my budget. The receptionist(who was very patient and helpful) told me about Kendra, who is a junior stylist(still in training and charges less than the other stylists) I decided to give her a try. Kendra was amazing! She listened to what I wanted(long layers) and gave me a GREAT cut! She took her time with my haircut(I went in on a Saturday so I had more time to spare) and dryed and styled my hair all for.....here's the best part...$50.00! So all I can say is, Thanks Kendra, and Thanks Utopia! I love the salon, warm, friendly people, nice artwork, I will be back and will tell ALL my friends to rush to see Kendra!

Len you are truly a miracle worker! Thank you! You and your salon live up to your name! I know I have found a truly talented, friendly stylist and a warm inviting, friendly, unpretentious salon! I love the color you did for me(the warm ....not brassy) coppery brown color, which goes with my olive complected skin wonderfully! You cut my hair to precision with long layers that are not choppy(after I told you I did not want that much length removed) you respected that and I appreciate that! I found myself surrounded by friendly, smiling, people at the salon who alll seemed to be happy to be there(unlike some salons I have been to where they appear to be miserable or unhappy, which makes me ...the client unhappy) I love the music, I love the artwork, the scented candles and your warm and friendly assistants as well. Thank you Len! You gave me a total transformation! I will be back!

Tony jones is the man. it is my first time seeing him and i gotta say he is the best i seen in the city so far. When he greeted me first thing i noticed of him was his good manor and kindaness. Then later on when it came to the hair cutting he knew what i wanted and knew what was best that would fit my looks which was a modifield mohock. also when he was cutting campare to others i have saw in the city he took his time each and every second of it to make each and every spot look perfect. no mistakes! he would keep looking at each spot and feeling it if it has to be extra perfect. thanks tony what high standreds you have of yourself and im going back!

I like the salon. I've been to a few around town and I am happy to see this place as my regular. Billy is the man. He'll work with you to get what you want and then make the time fly with conversation and anecdote from a varied life. Good fun. Good cut! I like to spend money on my hair and I won't trust anywhere too inexpensive. Utopia is just right, good price for great product. My advice -- check it out!

Wow! I have gotten more complements on my hair since I got my hair color at this charming salon. Great down-to-earth people, I had a really lovely and relaxing experience. But best of all were the results! I got a super glorious color from Maritza. I love what she did with my hair color!!

For YEARS, I have been dreading to go to a salon for fear that I might end up with a horrible haircut and a bucket full of regrets. In fact, I waited 5 years to take the plunge and just "go for it" (not to mention I was going through a heavy-duty emotional phase in my life which requires something big...like a drastic haircut!). However, in order to have this drastic change be a positive experience (and not ANOTHER nightmare I need to cry about) I knew I needed a professional, and not just any professional...a HAIR GOD! THANK HEAVENS for LEN at UTOPIA. Out of all the stylists that I researched, there was something about him--his reviews, his professional background, that gave me the assurance that everything will be OK (at least where my hair is concerned). The ambiance in UTOPIA is relaxed, modern, and calming. Music plays in the background and multiple art pieces are displayed throughout the space. The front desk is friendly and accommodating. When Len approached me, he had a... Read more
