Using a cellphone while driving

ACLU lawyers lined up in the ICU to take the case of poor Sarah McPhinley who plowed through a group of nuns and school children because she was distracted and, more so. aghast at the driver next to her who was talking on a cell phone.

This irritates me so much, especially the ones that are texting while driving.

despite all the horror stories you hear almost daily there are still a significant amount of people who think that it won't happen to them and that they are a part of a small elite group who can drive while yakking perfectly. if you drive along with them for a good amount of time i can almost bet they will make at least one mistake because they are not concentrating on driving.

Horrible idea and I'd say if you are going to do it to pull over and park somewhere to have your conversation. It is much better than texting of course but still awful. I wouldn't go as far as to say turn your phone off, but try to just ignore and try to avoid dialing out while your driving, answer if you must. If you must take a call or make one I suggest first making sure that your surroundings are clear and being extra cautious about it, regardless of what you're talking about with the other person on the line . Your safety and the safety of those around you is more important than anything you might be talking about on the phone.

Why? There are enough gadgets out there that no one should have one in their hand, we use cell phones too much anyway, but if you must use one, get some hands free gadget installed, The first "bag phones" were for emergencies mostly and evolved from there, so for emergencies, great, important business, or whatever, but to just chat with one up to your ear is probably just one of the terrible driving habits you already have. This is a no brainer and should be common sense, when you rode your bicycle did you eat a bowl of banana pudding? You never know what will pop up, go wrong, blown tire, loose dog, deer, driving is difficult enough, use your head and we can keep the law from making more laws because we are too stupid do the right thing,

California has a handsfree law. Why don't ALL FIFTY states have this law? I believe that the first offense should be a minimum of $1000.00 and a requirement to have some kind of GPS phone that deactivates when moving beyond XX-mph.

This really gets to me.  Sometimes a man or woman is so busy yakking away on the phone they can't drive straight or they don't go when the light turns green or any number of potentially dangerous mistakes. It reallyi rks me.

depends on who you are and the situation.....on long stretches of boring interstate Ive been known to do this....I will talk on the phone on the way to or from work....have the number already looked up and ready to punch before I start, but if in a busy traffic situation or where I need to pay more attention......I dont use the phone...and by no means do I TEXT while driving.

Even worse are those drivers who send off e-mails from their Blackberry's while driving. Yes, you know those drivers, the ones holding their Blackberry's at the top of their steering wheel! They look at the screen for a few seconds then look up to make sure that they're not about to drive into a ditch.

I normally don't use the cellphone while on the road but have on occasion and I find myself so distracted that I didn't even remember the streets going home.  Definitely a disaster waiting to happen.

I read an article one that said someone driving while on their cell phone is the equivalent of someone driving while under the influence of alcohol and I sure believe.  I've been behind people doing 25-30 in a 45 because they're on the phone too busy chatting instead of driving.  The best part is when they get mad at you for going around them like its your problem.

It's usually a female driving some huge SUV in the mall parking lot!  And she is also usually screaming at her kids at the same time!  In my opinion, get done with the conversation BEFORE you pull out of your parking space!

They should allow summary flogging of every tenth offender for this. That might encourage the others.

I don't have a cell phone, but my husband does, and it drives me absolutely batty when I'm talking to him and he says "I'm in the car, I'll call you back," and hangs up. Well, if you're busy driving, why don't you just put your phone on voice mail???? Why even try to answer it right away????

A lot of things can be very distracting and dangerous while driving. Cell phones, eating, putting makeup on, and even reading. Paying attention is a very important quality.

I would consider this a bad habit, although some people can pull it off better than others. I tend not to answer my phone or make calls while I'm driving, and am apt to pull over to talk if I deem it necessary. But it is definitely distracting and it should be discouraged. Although, I'm not sure about these laws popping up that make doing this a misdemeanor punishable by fine. I can understand if they're all over the road, but if no other moving violation is being commited then I can't see the reason for it other than to fill the coffers for some fiscally reckless county.

royal pain in the neck. these selfish jerks are so into themselves they do not care if they may cause an accident. I see it all of the time. they either are not paying attention, or they slow way down and putter while they yak on the phone. oblivious to anyone but themselves.

This should be banned dudes. Nothing but accidents will come out of this bad habit. If you must use a cellphone just pull over and you might save some lives.

Makes me think of the bumper sticker, "Could you drive any better if I shoved that cell phone up your ass?"

I Honestly feel that it isn't as bad as everyone thinks.... I have seen more accidents, not related to cellphones than not. I just feel that this gives many people something to complain about. Bad drivers are just that, cell phones are everyone elses scapegoat.

There are many mangled angels standing by St. Peter's gates with a cell phone in their hand. Then there's me in my rental car this week, calling somebody while driving, leaving it in the coffee cup holder and then leaving it in the car when I turned it in.

i have almost been hit by somebody talking on a cellphone a few times . the sad thing is the people dont even know how close they came to hitting me cuz they are so in to their phone conversation they forget they are not the only on the road

Driving while talking on a cellphone with one hand is dangerous! People need to pay attention on the road.

People drive bad enough as it is. Do we really need more distractions?

I'll admit this is a bad driving habit yet I often end up doing this. BUT, I try to get those hand free phone devices and make sure that I don't drive while I'm angry as a result of a phone conversation I have going on. Because if I don't I really am a risk to everyone's safety.

I usually do not talk on my cell phone while I am driving because it can become distracting and dangerous, but I occasionaly slip up here and there.

This annoys me to no end. Since most people are incapable of doing more than one thing, while on a phone; I don't understand why it is that they think they are capable of driving and using their phones at the same time.

It is so annoying when your stopped at a light and when it is green the person infront of you is too side tracked to relize green means go!

This is the most dangerous driving habit at all I think. Your attention is off the road, and yur only driving with one hand.

Definately the worst. Talking on these damn things promotes other terrible driving manuvers that piss people off. Shut up and drive already!!!!!

Irritating as hell. Count on them to miss what is going on around them. I hear a lot of people claim they can drive as well with a cellphone in one hand as they can ordinarily, but then I have to wonder how badly they drive ordinarily.

This can be up there with drunk driving. I've seen countless people run reds because they are talking on the phone and not paying attention.
