As a child this holiday was right up there with Christmas and your birthday! You go out at night--and back then it was without parents if you had a large group of kids to go with--you got candy from people who wouldnt give you the time of day the rest of the year, and you got to disguise yourself! There wasn't the choice of costumes we have for kids today but we found stuff and threw together something. I remember not liking the masks that seemed to be popular. Rubber hot things that you ended up wearing on top of your head by mid-evening. I still love Halloween.

Pretty solid childhood memories. Even better college memories - a list could be compiled of the most offensive college halloween costumes ever...

This was enjoyable because it gave me a chance to wear a costume and get CANDY!! Also, I used to go with my family to the house of some friends for a party -- this family was always known to go all out on holidays. And I mean ALL OUT! Among some of my costumes were Annie, a pioneer girl, and a rag doll.

Wish I could still go. Halloween is my all time favorite holiday, when I was a kid it was Candy and parties and Costumes. Now that I am older, wiser and more mature (ha!) it is Alcohol, parties, and costumes. One of the most Fun nights of the year.

It was cool getting the free candy, pop, money.... however, sucked when your parents dressed you in the most awful costumes, or tons of makeup, and by the time you were done trick or treating, your feet hurt, your costume was basically ruined, and you had a belly ache from eating too much candy lol

With me being the small kid who always wanted to do what the big kids were doing, I would tag along with my older cousins to go trick-or-treating. However, being small and wearing my little costume (basically pajamas and a Richie Rich mask) had its advantages when I would walk up to the door, smile and say "Trick or treat, please?" as I usually ended up with more treats at the end of the night than the other kids. A great childhood memory indeed.

Something else the media has stolen from our children. The stories about glass, needles etc found in candy were ALL found to be FALSE but not nearly as much airtime was given to this finding as was given to the fear filled reports first broadcast. All of us who remember that fun filled night of communion with our neighborhood will mourn its passing.

I went trick-or-treating up until I was about ten or eleven. And I used to think that was too old. But now you get trick-or-treaters that look like they're ready for college, and probably already are.

There was nothing like getting a bunch of free candy for the minimal work of putting on a costume and knocking on people's doors. I grew up in a rural area, so I (or at least my parents) knew all of the people we went to, so there wasn't really any danger involved for me.

I enjoyed it as a kid, as I loved candy...and getting lots of candy was my idea of heaven (so long as it wasn't the cheap stuff like gum, smarties, lollipops, etc.), the supernatural beasties associated with the holiday, and celebrating a holiday where I wasn't forced to sit in a church pew for an hour or 2. When I was 12 or 13, a friend and I were perambulating around town (I remember it was a very sunny and bright afternoon and I think it was a Saturday), and I was wearing a ratty pair of sneakers that suddenly became excruciatingly painful when we were miles from home. Too, we went to one house where someone upstairs threw a water balloon down at us. It didn't hit us, exploding harmlessly on the sidewalk, and it was certainly preferable to getting an apple containing a razor blade, but as I trudged painfully back home, my feet blistered and bleeding, I remember thinking, "You know, maybe I am becoming too old for this." Now, as a middle-aged adult, I feel somewhat guilty as every Ha... Read more

I miss this aspect of childhood; the act of banging on strangers' doors for free eats was so much fun back in the day.

I enjoyed this for a very long time.  I grew up when it was safe to walk the streets and we lived in a small town.  Once in high school my friends and I would start one direction and hit a ton of houses, come home and dump the load (clean thoughts folks...lol) then head the other direction and see how many other houses we could hit.

I went once and it was extremely unpleasant. We ran into the moronic 'egg-throwers' who plague many elderly house fronts, and one of their flour bags ended up on my friend's back... Lousy chavs.

I'm definitely not as big of a candy fan now as an adult as I was as a kid. Dressing up costumes was alright, but the biggest joy was running around the neighborhood with my siblings and friends collecting way too many sweets!

The best memory I have associated with this are the incredible costumes that my mother created for me. Detailed, accurate, and just plain awesome, over the years, they included a Starfleet uniform (TNG), the original Green Power Ranger complete with the power shield (my personal favorite), an Atlanta Braves star, and a NASA astronaut among others. Now, I just go in plainclothes with my nieces and nephews, but they do still sell Starfleet uniforms...^_^

I loved Halloween. My parents always went the whole nine yards. The day before we went to get pumpkins and then Halloween afternoon we would carve them, and then we would dress up. We would make carmel apples and eat them, and then it was time to go trick or treating. The entire day led up to this one night of your childhood when there can never be too much candy and the streets are full of magic. It was only second to Christmas morning. My sister and I would run from house to house collecting the goodies. I always hated the people who gave out those orange circus peanuts. Nasty.

Yep back then Halloween was definitely a different time, even in the 70's when I was a kid. My favorite part of Halloween was making up my own original costume. Of course the candy came a very close second!

Halloween has always been a favorite time of mine.My Mom used to make my costumes, and I vividly remember most of them.I went as GI Joe,A Pirate,A Magician, and even as Elvis (way before he died). My friends and I would cover the whole little town we lived in,and have big piles of candy and apples and nickles. There'd be a party and contest in the school gym,and a great time was had by all.Halloween has the coolest decorations, too! In Celtic cultures, it is said that the veil between the worlds is thin at this time of the year, and it is a marvelous time to honor your ancestors.

I had more fun dressing up has the Grim Reaper and scaring everyone away from my house and the candy. I had one lady screaming bloody murder. Best scare count: 19 kids and 3 adults.

Trick or Treat or Halloween was so different back in the fifties and sixties. The neighborhoods back then were teeming with kids. It was a more innocent time. No bad candy, razors, etc... Back then I would fill up pillow cases with candy.
