Times Square

Times Square is where tourists like to go in New York. It was more dangerous before its cleanup a few years ago. The theater is there. I didn't bother going to it really. I'd gone before. There is the discount ticket place. My nephew in Conn. and wife go there. There is something to see but it is not the fun place many might think it is. There is still crime underneath. There is the David Letterman show. I guess fun in a way. I would not have a kid go hanging around there. Most people from Conn. where I am originally from really don't like NY that much.

im a 12 year old and i always go to the Big Apple. But i never go to times square. The reason is because well.....there isnt much to do. There is a big Toys "R" Us and that big AT&T store but thats it so i never go there

It's ok from a distance, but I certainly wouldn't want to live in that rat race.

Although I can see the draw, I've been to Times Square enough where it doesn't have much of an appeal. It reminds me of all of the lights on the Las Vegas Strip crammed into just a few blocks.

It's ok, but I liked it better when it was nasty and sleazy and didn't have a MacDonalds.

Lots of bright lights and traffic, both human and automobile. This place is a hive. It’s probably the most crowded place in the world outside of Asia. Come here to check it out, walk around, and feel delightfully anonymous, but don’t expect quick service in the restaurants.

Tourist trap. . .separates those who've been to big cities and those who've never seen a building over fifteen stories. It's okay for about oh. . .thirteen minutes.

Times Square is one of the quintessential places for tourists to go when they are visiting New York City. There are shops on both sides of the street offering everything from makeup to portraits to chocolate. At night, Times Square becomes even better, when all of the buildings’ lights turn on and create a spectacle that is truly amazing.

Pretty cool, but nothing special now that lots of cities across the world (Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, London) have very similar districts.

Sure, it's all commercial and probably no different from any large city in terms of shops and restaurants (damn, can't seem to escape Sephora!)...but there is something so ineffably New York about the towering buildings, lights, and the sheer manic pace. More than three decades after having left NY, after having visited Tokyo, Taipei, Paris, London, Milan, Chicago, Boston, San Fran, LA,  it still retains a certain magic all of its own as the quintessential expression of the modern 20th century city. This is it.

From the time of my earliest memories, Times Square was a crawling cesspool, although fascinating in a grim Travis-Bickle sort of way. From the late 60's until the late 80's, it was noted primarily for its garish porno theatres, sick adult bookstores, and prostitutes of both genders (as well as end-of-the-road panhandlers and annoyingly-loud black Israelites). Nobody with even reasonable mental and/or sexual health spent more time there than they absolutely had to. Still, it was uniquely, fundamentally NY, and had a rich, colorful history. I was passing through there a few months ago and was astonished at the enormity of its make-over and transformation into a mecca of Capitalist Consumption. This is NY's Times Square? This is NY? Could just as easily be Dallas or Cincinnati or Orange County, considering the profusion of overpriced, trendy chain stores. A tourist trap that I pass through as I get off the bus and head to the Village or the Garden. Very little of my NYC time is spent in this overcommercialized Yuppie pit! I suggest they reopen the Terminal Bar!

If you are the type of person who has to do things once in your life...New Years Eve in Times Square has to be one of them. I was there to celebrate the new year 2004. You definetly have to have a lot of patience...about eight hours worth! But when the countdown begins it's an awesome feeling, you and about 500,000+ people all screaming for the same moment. If you want a good spot plan on lining up about four in the afternoon. Once you're in you cannot leave and re-enter.Not even to use a bathroom! Wait, did I forget to say there are no public bathrooms? Expect to wait in line to enter the street gates, security was very tight, NYPD did a great job. There were Policeman everywhere. Make sure you have a lot to talk about because the City of NY does not really provide any type of entertainment until about Ten. And even then that is only some music. Times Square is a wonderfully busy place and something everyone should see. People from a small town may find it overwhelming and remember to check your wallet to make sure its still there, Avoid During TRL as the screaming mass of pubescent teenagers can be distracting.

Times Square has come a long way, baby ! I remember back in the day when this place was filled with prostitutes, adult book stores, adult film theatres, drug dealers, and every other decay of humanity. It is now a wonderful, bustling tourist site, and apparentaly a place where locals love to go too ! :)

Times Square seems to be misunderstood by many people who view it as an attraction like Disneyland and not a place where native New Yorkers flock to. Uncontested, this is the Media and Entertainment Capital of the World all within 10 Blocks - theatres, nightclubs, 5star restaurants, swank hotels, financial companies, advertising agencies, record labels, and the eyes of the world via MTV, ABC, Fox News, and CNBC all call Times Square home. The street vendors, since the NYC ordinance prohibiting their existance was not renewed accidentily, has certainly damaged the landscape for the past few weeks, but that will soon change. Do people in LA hang out on Sunset Strip? Do people who live in Vegas go to Las Vegas Boulevard? Times Square is all that plus a business location and if anyone has noticed the newest billboards and spectaculars going up many of them are directed to reach these multinational comapnies that are Headquartered here - there are made so elaborately to IMPRESS the hell out... Times Square is GORGEOUS in all its Disney-ized glory! On one corner you can watch a serious news program being produced (20/20), and across the street shop in fabulous toy store (Toys R Us) with a giant ferris wheel! Where else in the world can a guy stand in the middle of the street playing his guitar in nothing but a cowboy hat and his tighty whities and not get hauled off to jail?!?! Awesome cheescake at the Roxy Deli, lots of tacky gift shops, the Ed Sullivan Theatre, and the brilliance of the nighttime neon makes Times Square just good clean fun.

It's one of the more interesting areas in New York. Times Square has been total re-gentrified into a high-end yuppie center of commerce. The only thing is that it is way too tourist tacky and corporate in nature. Whenever this happens a place loses all of its character. But it is better than it was 10 years ago that's for sure.

Guiliani sanitized this neighborhood, turning it into a shopping mall that could exist in the downtown area of essentially any U.S. or Canadian city. In this, he and the greedheads who made beaucoup $$$$ on this ill-advised fiasco forever erased something that was quintessentially New York. Even though that neighborhood got tired and shabby over the years, there was something ineffably Manhattan about it, and it was interesting to look at worn out buildings and businesses that were the surviving relics of an earlier New York. Now Time Square is nothing more than a tourist trap for yokels and hayseeds to be separated from their $$$. They have overdeveloped the area, and as a result, the vehicular and pedestrian traffic, which was always horrendous, is the worst it's ever been. Also, what little breeze and sunlight that was afforded there has been diminished by the grossly oversized buildings that loom over the citiscape. I guess the hicks have to have someplace to go...

this place was f*cking awesome! very crowded (duh!) but so much to see. i could stand there and stare at everything forever. full of life.

Times Square is a very interesting place! No matter when you visit it throbs with life and energy! You don't have to be there on New Year's Eve to feel the lifeblood of the city! And check out the ticket booth here, where you can score some cheap theater tickets to some great shows!

I went to Times Square for New Years 2001 last year and it rocked! I got there early, around 5 pm, to get a good spot, and it was certainly worth it. The police divide the people into gated off sections, and if you wait for them to open up a new area you can get right at the front of the section, which is what we did and we had an awesome view. The people around us were all very nice and interesting. Pack warmly though, and don't forget to bring those little handwarmer things. My friends and I stood outside for 8 hours freezing our butts off. Also, bring food, but not beverages. Don't drink anything until after midnight! If you have to go to the bathroom, you will loose your spot in the crowd and the police won't let you in. (Unfortunately this meant people were relieving themselves on the street). It may be one of the busiest places in the world, but Times Square may very well be the most beautiful place in the world. Billboards for broadway shows and all of the lights are astounding and well worth seeing. If you can't make it to Disney this year, then Times Square is the place to be.

Sure...It's great if you love crowds of people shuffling along, 5 abreast, stopping every 10 feet to take a picture. There's a multitude of souvenir shops, chain restaurants, and stores that you would typically find in a mall. This is NOT typical New York. You will find very few natives here, except the ones who want to swindle you. Because of the severe overcrowding, I only go through this area when I have to.

I could spend all day in Times Square A feeling like no other!!!!!! Both times while visiting NYC I was drawn back. NY NY gotta love it!!!!!!

At times square you can see many kinds of things. The movie theatres and electronic shops are especially great.

Times Square's really fun on New Years. However when its not New Years there's not much fun.

Get to Time Square before 9 pm to see the ball drop on new years eve.

Great food. Interesting people. Fun atmosphere
