A must for any jazz lover's music library - there's a lot of history in this album. I agree that it is still "fresh and engaging." It is! That is one of the best things about good jazz - something like this from 1959 can still sound so good now.

One of the classic jazz albums of all time. Although much has been written (and rightfully so) about Brubeck's experimentation with time signatures, the melodies found on this album are outstanding. The entire quartet were at the peak of their musical abilities when they recorded this album, and the proof is in the listening.

It was a breakthrough in it's time, and remains fresh and engaging. Paul Desmond was the key collaborator in devising the unusual time structures, and his sax is captivating throughout the collection. With this recording Dave Brubeck's genius was "discovered" by the broad population as it went high up in the charts agains "popular" recordings. No one has ever covered the signature pieces on this album -- and couldn't. They ARE after, Brubeck, and another rendition would be flat and disappointing. The original jazz sound of a creative force.
