The Three Stooges

I don't have anything personally against them. But I don't understant how someone can watch it. They say guys really like them and I don't think that is too good. It never seemed funny to me. The station here has decided to play them when no one else does anymore.

I watched this several years ago on AMC. It was a great program. My two favorite characters were Moe and Curly. I also liked Larry and Shemp but I didn't care much for Joe. Shemp replaced Curly because Curly was too ill to continue starring in the Three Stooges. But Curly did have a cameo in one of Shemp's episodes. When Shemp died of a heart attack in 1955, Joe Besser replaced him. Moe would constantly slap and poke the other stooges. I'm not certain but I think that Moe Howard was the inspiration for the 2nd Doctor(Patrick Troughton) in Doctor Who. If I'm right, it wasn't a good idea. Moe was fantastic in the Three Stooges but not in Doctor Who.

Go watch Ridgewalker's gift to the board, FIRST, then read these reviews. 30, 40s, 50's, 60's...I didn't realize...has to be a record. Screw Mash, sitcoms, and high brow everything. Famous comedy twosomes and threesomes don't nudge the laugh track the Stooges made. I get it lots better now than when I rushed home from grade school to watch "Stooges" (ancient reruns to 60's stuff). Slapstick captured me as a kid. Wit shines through as I watch at age 50.

Guys...take a White Man's siesta. Turn off your phones. Put down your pens and pencils. Get a box of Cocoa Puffs, put your feet up and take a break. The Stooges were,and are, the definition of comedy! The physical humor is right out front, but the verbal stuff is what makes it work. "What's the password?" "Open the door!" "Do you know of the Great Wall of China?" "No, but I know a big fence in Chicago!" "Just spar with the champ. It'll be fun!" "I hate fun!" Curly was more physical (he couldn't always remember his lines) and Shemp was more verbal. It's all good!

The re-runs were popular when I was a little kid so, with a total of three good and one not so good TV option(s) at the time - my sister and I tuned in regularly. We liked them but we really did not think Larry, Moe and Curly were funny - though almost as proof that they were indeed functioning on the level of a 5 year olds - I recall picking up and putting into practice (on at least two momentous occasions) - some very gooney ideas. First, having seen an episode where they caused a kitchen to flood I proceeded to stop up the sink and let it overflow - just to see what that was like. It turned out to be kind of a bonus lesson since I not only satisfied my curiosity but also discovered that with an intentional bathroom flood you also get a blistered fanny. Soitenly. Nyuk nyuk, nyuk. Why I oughta.....Brilliant. Utterly stupid, but brilliant.

Over the last few years, watching the Stooges has been a Sunday morning ritual for my family. When I was younger I kind of took them for granted and thought it was nothing but gratuitous violence, but upon rewatching them as a teenager I learned the difference between "violence" and slapstick. Really, when you think about it, the Stooge violence isn't supposed to be funny- after all, what exactly is funny about someone being poked in the eye, a possible cause of blindness?- but somehow the Stooges make it funny. They were masters at the art of slapstick clowning- few have matched their timing and skill when it comes to physical comedy. Their films may seem simple and base, and to be sure they are pretty lowbrow- but the Stooges were truly skilled comics- like many comedians of the time they had a vaudeville background, and so they knew how to make an audience laugh. Curley pretty much made this act funny.Moe was not all that great and Larry was merely OK.

They're a little stupid at times but nevertheless they can make me bowl over with laughter...and probably spill the contents of the bowl. There's always 3 Stooges and 3 Girls for them. We all know it's really 3 guys fighting for one girl.

I can't believe people really found them funny. And I'm a guy!

I have been a Stooge fan for years and I'm only 24. I think I should make a Stooge "death tape" for myself (thanks Ridgewalker for the suggestion). This has got to be one of the best comedy teams in the history of entertainment, along with Laurel and Hardy, and the Marx Bros. The crap on Comedy Central today doesn't hold a candle to these guys.

Harmlessly enjoyable and, surprisingly, not too derivative.

These guys with either Shemp or Curly are the best. Simple stuff over and over yet it never gets old. I am amazed at how they can make it look so real. What I look for is face expressions. They are experts at that.

OK if you like slapstick but there are better comedy teams for that.There's not much else going on here-smacks on the head and funny noises only go so far before getting stale...

How can you not rank the Stooges high? Sure, some of their bits might run a little long for todays tastes, but you could argue that some of today's tastes aren't very damn funny. When Curly left the group, there was no way he could be replaced. This is why I didn't mind Shemp so much, because it's like they weren't really trying to replace him. But Curly Joe? A big bald guy with almost the same name? No, didn't care for that much. Still, all in all, it goes back to a time before people were over sensitive and cartoonish violence was nothing but cartoonish.

These guys are timless but declined a little after Curly had his stroke and left the group.

stupid, yes, silley, yes, funny, yes. These three brought slapstick, physical and verbal comedy to the for front of popularity. If you don't like to think and like to laugh, catch these three for good fun.

Slob humor, but they did succeed at being very funny within the prosaic boundaries they set for themselves. I think Curly was the only one of their number that may have had genuine comedic talent, even genius, but my personal favorite was actually Shemp, who was very funny in a dry, understated sort of way.

Anybody who gives them less than a 5 should be shot...Calling Dr. Howard..Dr. Fine..Dr. Howard...

The Three Stooges are a pretty fun group of guys. A little to stupid for me at times but still fun.

Still the best comic trio of all time. Their antics were always over the top hilarious. The best of this great trio were Moe, Larry and Curly, followed by Shemp. Still funny and still relavent, after all these years!

Absolute comedy geniuses. They were hilarious w/o all of the swearing, or sex jokes, or hardcore violence like shooting or stabbing people. Good clean fun suitable for all ages.

pure comediac genius. true that the original shorts trio are the classic version, but Shemp was no fluke. he was actually one of the original stooges when they were Ted Healy's boys (curley joined after Shemp left and the boys struck out on their own). i've been a fan since i was a little kid and first caught the shorts on Superstation Funtime on WTBS. i dont know a woman who likes them. i just consider this a shortcoming of their gender.

Mildly amusing slapstick, that fades to the background in the face of creative dialogue and breaking the fourth wall.

They were okay but more of a guy thing than a girl thing, I think. Hey, this one song sticks in my head from one of the Stooges shorts (films, people!). I think Larry, Moe and Curly were dressed in cap and gown and were professors at some college and they were teaching the class something with a song that used all the letters of the alphabet in turn. Went something like - bear with me here - B-A BAY, B-E BEE, B-I BICKY-BYE, B-O BOW, BICKY-BYE-BO B-U BOO, BICKY-BYE-BOW-BOO (and went on D-A DAY, D-E DEE, etc., etc.). Anyone have a clue what the heck that was about??? I never thought I'd actually type those lyrics, by the way. Calling Dr. Howard...Dr. Fine...Dr. Howard.

Comic Genius. Every great comedy show, from Lucy to Seinfeld exhibit the influence of The Stooges (in fact Jerry once complained to George that Elaine's father was going to treat them like Moe). I laughed myself silly watching Three Little Pirates (Yo-MaHa...Ah Ha!!!) in 1966 and still laugh myself silly when I watch that episode for the 20th time in 2004. Curly was an extraordinary comic talent. Moe and Larry were hilarious too. However, not all Stooges are the same. Most of the ones with Shemp weren't that great and the Joe/Curly Joe episodes were absolutely horrible (I especially hated Joe Besser; he's no Stooge). The ones with Curly are all comedic gems. Didja ever notice that love of the Stooges is a Male thing. I have never found a woman (other than my mom) who thinks they are funny.

Weren't they a dysfunctional family? Seems like they were always yelling and hitting each other.

The Stooges were okay for a classic comedy team, but they still don't hold a candle to Laurel and Hardy, who I believe had more genuine, natural comedy.
