Possibly the most ambitious of the Sergio Leone-Clint Eastwood collaborations, many have cited this spaghetti western as one of THE of its genre. "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" (1967) was definitely a great movie, though in my opinion, it is a shade behind its predecessor, the janus-faced "For a Few Dollars More" (1965). The movie had great acting with Eli Wallach as the comical-yet-ugly Tuco, Lee Van Cleef as the menacingly bad Angel Eyes, Luigi Pistilli as the sanctimonious priest brother of Tuco, and Clint Eastwood as the iconic Man with No Name (but referred to as Blondie by Tuco); and the movie was a little more easier to place in time as it took place in the closing stages of the American Civil War. Along with a brilliant score by Ennio Morricone, this third 'Dollars' trilogy featured a great plot (the search for Bil Carson's gold between the unholy trio) and great subplots (Tuco's strained relationship with his brother, and Angel Eyes's blatant contempt of his commanding offic... I love The Good the Bad & the Ugly (along with all Leone's Westerns) but the 2-disc Collector's edition disappointed me. I was excited to see the extra footage that was in the original Italian version but after seeing it I quickly ran out and bought the older (original US version) DVD because the dubbing of Older Clint & Eli on the new scenes took me completely out of the movie (although I commend their efforts). To me it stands out like a sore thumb when you suddenly hear old mens voices coming from the young faces & I truly wonder if Leone would have wanted it released like this knowing it would sound like this. I wish they would have simply included the previous 'Original US release' cut without all the extra footage but with all the great color correction & sound mix. Hopefully in the future & on the Blu-Ray. 5 stars for the movie - 1 star for the actors voice dubbing in the new scenes.

Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, three men, one "good" (Clint Eastwood), one bad (Lee Van Cleef) and one "ugly" (Eli Wallach), race to find $200,000 in buried gold. At the time of writing this review, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" was number 4 in the IMDb Top 250. Although it is a very well made movie, with impressive cinematography, and one of the most memorably scores of all time, storywise, it's not actually all that great a film and there are many other westerns that are far superior ("Rio Bravo" and "High Noon" are two that spring to my mind). Its main problem is that it is just far too long. The story is a relatively simple one, but it takes about an hour (out of 2 1/2) for the main goal of the characters to become apparent, and the remainder of the film is cluttered with many scenes that, although interesting as stand-alone scenes, don't do anything to further the story. To add insult to injury, Lee Van Cleef's character vanishes for a good chunk of the ... Read more
