I saw this movie again last night for the first time in a long time, and was reminded why I enjoyed it so much the first time around. The writing was great, each character was deep and emotionally involving, and the all-star cast didn't disappoint, with Damon, Paltrow, Law, and Hoffman turning in great performances each. How Damon didn't even get nominated for best actor is beyond me. Minghella and Damon did an amazing job making Ripley, the "bad" guy, someone that you were torn between wanting him to get caught and wanting to escape. Highly recommended.

this is a strange movie where a young man is hired by this rich guys father to go to Italy and bring him to the states. Tom becomes Dickies friend and starts to get interested in Dickies life. Dickie is engaged to marge {Gwyneth Paltrow} but steps out on her. Dickie is kind of a jerk.In another town tom and Dickie fight Dickie ends up dead and Tom tries to assume his identity for the rest of the movie. and lies to others about Dickies where abouts. He kills a couple more people which shows that Tom is a very troubled mass murderer. Some good scenes and good acting. I did not love this movie,it was pretty good. and there are some beautiful scenes of Italy.

An OK movie, but yea, after it was over you're like, who cares? Damon's character was creepy, but I guess that was the way he was supposed to be portrayed. And how does he look like he's 15 when he's actually like 40?

This movie would have been good if it was shorter, had a better director, and they made the characters more believable. Alot of great actors in a horrible movie. I wouldn't bother if I was you. :(

Worth seeing, but barely. The first hour is great, but the storyline rambles on and on. The actor playing the "Dickie" character was outstanding, Gwyneth Paltrow was pretty good, and the cinematography will make you want to go to the Italian Coast, but don't get your hopes up too high for this movie. I saw part of the original movie which Mr Ripley was based on, called "Blue Noon" and that looked outstanding...

This movie is interesting for many reasons, but I have to say the last hour disappointed me. Interesting because of the country most of the film was shut in: Italy. Interesting because of Matt Damon's sexual orientation. This movie starts radically, but the bisexual Matt (or is he gay?) turns out in the end to be a massmurderer, that's sad for the movie... 3, 5 stars.

This is my least favorite movie of all time. I hated it with a passion. Just thinking about this horrible disgusting piece of crap movie gets me extremely angry. GRRRR!!!! This film is awful.

Matt Damon's "Tom Ripley" was confused at best. Was he a clever mastermind psychotic? Was he a clumsy opportunist who commited murder and spent the rest of the sleeper movie covering it up. I had such hopes for this movie! Jude Law was excellent as usual. But Matt Damon just could not pull it off. Maybe Matt can find a new vehicle to really explore his acting prowess. Such as: Boy goes to lunch, boy stains his cardigan sweater. It could be a tragic comedy.

This film gets my vote for the most Beautiful Looking Terrible Film of all time. It's like staring at a postcard for 2 hours ! Every teeny-tiny detail that goes into making a movie was time wasted in this case. Truly awful stuff.

The Talented Mr. Ripley was not what I expected. The acting was good. The setting was beautiful but the story not only dragged but was just weird. It didn't sit well with me. There were a lot of undertones that led you to believe Matt Damon's character was gay which was a weird twist in the plot. I was confused at what Matt Damon's characters goal was. It was misleading, and weird. The only part I liked was the footage of Europe.

Although an interesting film, it was just okay. I think the big name stars were the only reason the film received good ratings.

This movie had some interesting actors such as Jude Law and Matt Damon, but it was just too long. Matt Damon stealing somebody elses identity? Wow, what a different character for him. He should have been nominated again for an Academy Award. I would have preferred a different ending too. Jude Law is a new great actor, and I feel we will see him in more great performances. Also, they could have made this movie shorter because it starts to drag on far too long. I could feel myself starting to snooze.

Despite a slight distaste for the likes of Matt Damon I actually enjoyed this film. The acting was pretty good, entertaining plot line, beautiful setting etc. After seeing the film I picked up the book and enjoyed that as well and would recommend it as a good read. It's really easy reading and surprisingly well written. Of course Hollywood took their liberty with the original story line but overall I'd say they made it pretty entertaining and for once kept an ending that wasn't all sunshine and puppys.

This movie was way too long. They could have made it shorter which would have made the movie better. It was twisted, but kind of dumb. Its worth renting once.

The preview to this movie is deceiving. It is a lot more disturbing than I had expected. Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Damon star in this as well as another really good-looking actor. It keeps you attention and it is suspenseful. There is an unexpected twist at the end.

A group of five of us went to see this movie, and only one of us walked out liking this one. Not even the person who first suggested it liked it!! Matt Damon and Gwenyth Paltrow were absolutely wonderful, but it would have been even better had they had a good script to work with. The same thing happened over and over, and I think Mr.Ripley's personality confused even himself. It was mundane, boring, and the worst movie I've seen since "The Crying Game"!

I thought the movie started out with potential, but got a little lost and long-winded in the middle. Matt Damon was very believable as the twisted, psychotic Mr. Ripley. He gave me the willies. I think they did a good job developing his character's relationship with the others. But for once I wish Gweneth would try a different type of role. She's been typecast as the high-moraled, betrayed, heroine way too many times.

Having read and enjoyed four of Patricia Highsmith's five Ripley novels, I don't at all agree the book is better than the movie. Ripley in the novel is completely unbelievable -- he's an entertaining but totally artificial creation, concocted from the author's desire to make a philosophical point. Ripley in the movie is very believable. The film has depth because the characters, like real people, have feelings. The film is too long, but the cuts should have been made in the first half, not the second as most people seem to think. After the aridity of The English Patient, Minghella is back to the deep probing of the heart he showed in Madly, Truly, Deeply.

Great acting, psychological intrigue, but it just doesn't work. The big clue for me was when I started wondering when it was going to end. Luckily there were subtle body jestures to make one almost forget the uninteresting screenplay. The ending didn't need explaining it just needed to provide some depth to the characters. Please, that does not mean a longer film it just means "less is more". Watch "the Hitcher" with Rutger Hauer, a very short film filled with psychological inrigue and one that is much more compelling than The Talented Mr.Ripley.

The storyline had a lot of gaps. For instance, Ripley's character was not completely developed. In addition, it was rather long and began to drag towards the end. It also very sad and depressing.

Great acting by Matt Damon who plays a twisted sicko obsessed with a rich boy to the point of creepiness. He has an unbelievable knack for making me know what's in his character's head without the aid of words, gestures or narrative overdubbing. And ALL of the supporting roles were played excellently. The end is good too, it leaves one hanging in a most uncomfortable way ...

Good acting from all the actors and actresses. An almost-creepy movie. However, the movie gets too unrealistic and out-of-point towards the end. Kinda dragging too.

The makings for an excellent movie were there -- that much is for sure. However, there was not enough build-up to Dickie's murder. In fact, the whole exchange on the row boat ("You're boring..." -- "Oh yeah? Well you change your mind too much...") was completely unrealistic and stupid. The acting was decent, for the most part. Paltrow and the snobby friend were especially good. All in all, the film really doesn't compare with "Blue Noon" -- the movie on which it was based.

While this movie had the potential to have an awesome plot, it had too many loopholes and just seemed to drag and drag on. If you're into great acting this is a must see.

An attempt. That's what i would call it. Lacking in a cohesive script, the director/producer assumed that extending the length of the performance would help. It simply meant more of the same poorly connected dribble, and in the end, more disinfranchised movie-goers. I being among them.

I was captivated by the beauty of Italy, but found myself hating the despicable Mr. Ripley within minutes of his flashing his toothy, trying-to-be-wholesome grin. Gwyneth Paltrow was totally believable as the wronged girlfriend and once again proved herself a brilliant, wonderful to look at, actress. Definitely worth seeing.

This movie was very beautiful - the cinemaphotography, the costumes, the settings, the cast. However, the story was NOT good - it did not hold together well and I left with lots of questions that should have been answered by the movie. And Matt Damon was seriously outclassed in the acting skills department by Cate Blanchett and Gwyneth Paltrow.

This was a good, interesting movie with some very good acting performances. Matt Damon was excellent and you'll enjoy how his character thinks and reacts quickly to maintain his web of lies. Definitely worth seeing.
