Well, I gave it a 4. I've been a theater major and am studying acting and film. I thought the performances were very good, although, at times, they seemed like a repeat of something they had done earlier. As though someone said to them (except to Vivien Leigh) "Do what you did on stage." Marlon Brando is one of my favorite actors. I can understand how, in the early 1950s, he and the play had such an impact. Although the impact wouldn't be as great now. Vivien Leigh was absolutely wonderful. I felt she was truly the character. Elia Kazan's direction was great for the actors.

Top notch adaption of the play by Tennesse Williams. Marlon Brando at his best in this film before he became to famous and let his appearance go. Vivian Leigh does a perfect turn as the battle of the sexes ensues in hot and steamy low-rent New Orleans.

The acting, as many here have said, was really well done, but I found the movie somewhat dull and drawn out.

I give this a 4 only because of Marlon Brando's performance that inspired a generation of actors. The overall acting was excellent. I guess I never really got into the story.

Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh are certainly good in their roles and the movie is directed well, but overall, the movie is really depressing. And, by the way, has anyone ever ripped that many shirts in their life that they did in this flick?

"A Streetcar Named Desire" is a terrific movie. The acting is phenomenal across the board, but Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh steal the show. With a twisted, dark plot, the movie keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. It's about a woman with a mysterious past who goes to stay with her sister and brother-in-law in the French Quarter in New Orleans. At first, the sister stands out as the strange one, but then you begin to glimpse the dark underbellies of the other characters. It's pretty creepy to see how the plot unfolds. If you haven't seen this movie, I recommend renting it or catching it when it's on TV.

Obviously, I have an affinity for this movie. I think it is the greatest depiction in ANY medium of the battle of the sexes, of the left vs. right brain, of art vs. mediocrity, illusion vs. reality, language vs. culture. In addition, there is no better acting to be found in ANY other film. Williams understood society better than he understood himself.

Vivien Legh's portrayal of Blanche DuBois at the point in her life that this movie was made, makes her perrformance even more astounding. As always she does a wonderful job. The fact it was filmed in Black and White simply adds to the symbolic significance of this movie. It's wonderfully written and perfectly acted. As incomprhehnsible as Brando was in some places, his portrayal of Stanley is incomparible to any other.

I had the pleasure of seing "Streetcar" on the big screen in a theatre while visiting Washington DC. Vivien Leigh was great up there as all were. Toward the very end when, Stella having had her baby and knew Stanly had probably raped her sister, shunned Stanly saying, "Don't you touch me... Don't you ever touch me again!" all the guys in the theatre applauded and shouted, "Yeah! Right on Woman!"

"Stella....Stella...." I read the play before I saw the movie and usually the movies disappoint after you read the play or book but 'Streetcar Named Desire' is an exception. Marlon Brando is absolutely perfect in this movie. The acting was unbelieveable. I really liked the story. Even though this movie is in b & w (black and white) it keeps your attention the whole way through. Definitely a time piece. You see the South (New Orleans) back in the 60's. Great movie.

I hate Tenessee Williams so that's why the movie received a two, however Marlo Brando was amazing in the movie.
