Smaller than I expected but still majestic and mysterious. They cordon everything off, so you’re not allowed to get that close to the rocks. I did an audio tour and learned a lot about the history/construction of this place. I recommend coming here if you’re particularly interested; otherwise, you’re not missing out on much.

If at all possible avoid seeing this via a tour bus. As others have pointed out, a major highway is within yards of the site, and the effluence of hundreds of tourists diminishes the grandeur, at least to my mind. If possible, do what I was able to do, over thirty years ago. Park well out of sight, and walk up over the moors as the dawn breaks and mist is rising. Do that, if it can still be done, and see if you can prevent an atavistic shudder.

I think Stonehenge was built by Muslim terrorists to intimidate the British government!

I feel the attraction is mainly worth seeing, simply because of the boasting value. (You can say you've been there!) However, I would recommend ensuring you have a tour guide who is knowledgeable about the site if you really want to get a lot out of it. I felt the location was disappointing, as a main highway runs literally next to it. I had always imagined Stonehenge to be "remote", but alas, it is not. (At least not in the sense of being far away from traffic!) It is true that there are miles of grassy fields surrounding it, though, which does aid in visualizing the site as it must have been in earlier centuries. Also disappointing, but understandable, is that one cannot get very near the stones themselves. Much of Stonehenge's attraction is the supposed supernat. nature of the circle, but if there is anything to that, it's not obvious standing several yards away! Because I was in the USAF, and already living in the UK, I didn't feel like I'd really wasted my time (or money).... Read more

On route to Stonehenge, our tour guide, who had apparently read every book on the subject, gave us a lengthy and engrossing history of this incredible structure. When we arrived and were getting off the bus I couldn't believe my ears when I heard one man, after hearing this fantastic story, still refer to it as "just a pile of rocks". It made me glad it was roped off - otherwise it would not surprise me in the least to see someone with so little imagination and appreciation for something so remarkable just walk up and scrawl his name across it. Not surprisingly, this guy was in the minority, as nearly everyone else in our group seemed to really enjoy being there. Another impressive thing about this trip was that, compared to the hustle and bustle you experience at most other famous tourist attractions, this place has a kind of calming effect. It is located in what looks literally like the middle of nowhere - with miles of grassy fields as far as the eye can see in any direction. ... Read more

Until several years ago you could walk up to the stones. Now because of vandalism they have been roped off. It's still pretty wild how the stones got there. A little haunting.

Are these guys for real? How terribly inconvenient of Stone Age Man to put his stones a few miles from London. I'll get straight on the phone and ask him to move them a little bit to the right -

I suppose the mystery of how they were assembled is interesting but they are definitely out of the way for a tourist attraction. Worst part is you can't even get up next to them the whole is is roped off due to vandalism.

Stonehenge is good from far, but far from good. Its interest has diminished with its inaccessibility. You used to be able to wander in between the stones, but now you must look at the structure from a distance. Given its popularity and tourist status, the area is infested with bus traffic and commercialism.

How did they get these stones on top each other.
