I...hate...staff...meetings!! About 2 weeks ago, the bank where I work at hired a new Chief Operation's Officer who insists that all branch managers and department heads meet for a semi-daily conference call. These meetings sometimes take up to an hour and a half in the afternoon. Most of this time is spent discussing irrelevant agenda items that have nothing to do with the topic at hand. The meetings require the submission of reports that contain copious amounts of data that does not flow logically. In addition, our new COO is a big fan of cheesy motivational tactics, like putting little slogans on all spreadsheets and cheering on whenever a goal is met. There is nothing more that I hate than these types of psychological games. No one buys into it, and many think it is highly patronizing. I'm no cheerleader. I'd rather get right down to business, report our daily progress and move on. Most people do not need encouragement, nor do we need psychological tricks to do our wor... Read more

They have their purpose...sometimes. A great improvement to the Monday morning meeting, however, would be for the boss to end it by saying, "Great meeting today! Take the rest of the week off with pay. Here's tickets for the game. Drop off your house payments and electric bills at the front desk. This will give accounting a chance to calculate your bonuses and raises that start next week. I really love you guys!"

Whatever you may think of Ross Perot politically, he was dead-on when he said that meetings are the biggest waste of time in corporate America. I know I have never been to one that motivated me- beyond the motivation to stay awake. Isn't it great when they do things like....give you a baseball cap with the company logo if you answer a Q correctly? Sheesh. Wanna motivate me...give me the chick in Ridge's avatar pic.

Staff meetings are only the most irritating when they don't start on time, and you can't really go back to your own work because the meeting is "about to start..." Then when it does finally start, upper management spends an hour of your time telling you that you need to manage your time better to get more things done. So in being the somewhat above average worker you are, you bite the bullet and figure you will stay a few extra minutes, maybe even 30, to get the work done you could have had done were you not in that "time management" meeting earlier in the day...However, your ass gets frosted as upper management brushes quickly past you about an hour before the day is over and they say they have to leave early because of X. X could be anything or everything to do with their kid's this or that, or X could be "I have an appt." or "I have to take care of some business"... So the bottom line is you end up being the curmudgeon that diligently does the right thing, even if you complain in... Read more

Most staff meetings have motivated me to write a grocery list, or put in some time figuring out my weekly NFL picks.

Can be necessary to get the team together but should be kept to a minimum.  Any "weekly" staff meeting should really be cancelled if nothing's going on, or else you have a meeting just to have a meeting.  Rarely motivational but it can keep people on task.

So totally if I was a boss would I hold meetings to motivate the lazy, praise the efficient, and provide needed additional skills. For goodness sakes boss, the lazy people that won't work when you talk to them, don't think they will by any more of that talk. Fire them! Employees realize it is a privelege to have a job, and bosses don't be long-winded and treat your employees with a certain degree of respect.

Waste of time...especially where I work. Usually a meeting is held under the guise of discusssing something critical to our jobs. However, the manager has already made up her mind about what she wants us to do. When she gets a bee in her panties, she tends to run all over the place with NO thought of anyone else. It would help if she actually knew what we do on a daily basis.

listening to some bean counting windbag pontificate about their vision for the future and how they are going to make me happier and more productive is about as motivating as beating me into submission with a tire iron.

Staff meetings serve the purpose of getting everyone on the same page; sometimes it's like electric shock treatment. You can even utilize this time to give motivational tools, speeches etc but by no means are they motivational per say. As a matter of fact they normally are boring, annoying and counterproductive.

There are two things that Americans do more than anyone else in the world- (1) pointless violence and (2) pointless staff meetings. Yes, I have to attend because it's part of my job. . .but meetings are the biggest waste of time and resources.

Oh,yeah! These are just great. Almost as much fun as getting a root canal. I've never been so bored and miserable in my life...especially when you have to listen to some anal retentive boob who loves the sound of his own voice drone on about something that doesn't have a thing to do with my own job. Back when I had to suffer through these it was the closest I ever came to lapsing into a coma.

The only people who might be motivated by staff meetings are people who can sleep with their eyes open.

Ok if done right, if your sharing ideas and every one is allowed to contribute they are great. That said if you have listen to some boss drone on about what ever the pet peeve of project for month is, well that is just a waste of time.

These are now getting tedious. So much precious time has been wasted through meetings. I'm all for progress, but I think better preparation and an objective goes a long way than to have meetings about when the next meeting will be.
