There are some great exhibits at the St. Louis zoo, its free (except for parking unless you come really early and park on the street). There is a lot of walking compared to some zoos I have been too. Wouldnt say it is as good as the Cincinnati Zoo but def. worth going to!

I have frequented this zoo a lot and I am pretty proud to say it's one of the last zoos around with no general admission. Yes, there is a charge for parking. But it is far better than having to pay for BOTH. I have not been yet to see the new baby penguins and the baby sea otters that were born in March but I am hoping to make it back there when I visit St. Louis again in August. And don't forget to take a ride on the train or for adults visit on a Friday night during the summer for their series of concerts! Too fun!

I don't quite understand what Robert57 is complaining about. Admission at most zoos around the country is generally $10-$20 PER PERSON. And then on top of that, you STILL have to pay for parking (On average, $6-$10). And he's complaining about free general admission and $9 parking? Wow. I mean, I know $9 parking is high, but in the scheme of things, it doesn't seem so bad. And the train ride and the Children's Zoo? Guess what - they don't force you to do those things. They're extras. Just like your Pepsi and hot dog and souvenir. And traversing 77 acres in 5-10 minutes? Seems like quite a superhuman feat to me. http://fodors.com/miniguides/mgresults.cfm?destinat ion=st_louis@148&cur;_section=sig&property;_id=184712 http://www.stlzoo.org/home/featurednews/1zoo.htm http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/159460/the _best_zoos_in_the_united_states.html I don't care if you personally don't think it's one of the best zoos you've ever been to, but at least give it ... Thinking about the zoo takes me back to all those field trips during elementary school. I don't know about anyone else but the occupants of the zoo, with a few exceptions(Monkeys, elephants, zebras, seals, and lions),were always secondary to the trains. 2-headed snakes mean nothing when you have the chance to go through a tunnel on a miniature train.

This zoo is overrated by locals. It is not one of the best in the US, according to Web sites that rate zoos, and it is not really free. General admission is free but they charge $9 for parking, a few dollars for the children's zoo, $4 per person for the unnecessary train ride -- you can walk across it in 5-10 minutes, it's not that big. Animal exhibits are ok but not in national class like San Diego, Bronx, Brookfield, and others. Oddly, locals don't brag about the Botanical Garden 2 miles south of the zoo, which really IS world-class. For entertaining children, the City Museum is your best bet.

I bored me a little because I've seen like three different zoos, I'm a lot older, and it was almost 100 degrees that day. But it is free. Any families with kids (young kids) should go.

THE Best zoo in the country when you take all factors into consideration and especially that- The St. Louis Zoo is FREE. It would still be Top 5 if they charged admission but the fact that they don't places it at the top. Also, a fact not to be taken lightly- the refreshment stands sell beer!

I grew up in St. Louis and every time I go back for a visit, the zoo is a must-see for me. I think it is one of the best zoos in the country. It has so much to offer- for one thing, free admission. The exhibits are educational, visitor-friendly and aesthetically pleasing, from the new River's Edge to the Living World as well as an entertaining Children's Zoo and train rides! There is a wide variety of interesting creatures for all to enjoy! There's something for the whole family. The grounds are beautiful and well-kept, with a combination of modern amenities and classic old concrete buildings like the Herpetarium and, though it stinks!, the Monkey House, and in a class of its own, the original 1904 Worlds Fair Flight Cage. Duck when you walk through because there's birds swooping in from all directions! I guarantee the St. Louis Zoo is a full day, enjoyable trip for all the enjoy!
