Kissing is the place to start.... But it doesn't have to wait until midnight.

Sounds good. Just as long as it's one person at time...

nice to have that and I usually do. but this year everyone in my family got tired and went upstairs to bed. I am the only one up. so guess If i want to kiss someone, it will be the dog. oh well. Happy New year to you all.

Supposed to be my wife, but since I'm in the hospital on New Year's Eve for the second year in a row, I might have to settle for a nurse.

New Year's Eve is usually a big let-down and the whole build-up can thoroughly depressing. I'd rather stay in than shove my tongue down someone's throat just for the hell of it.

UPDATE: Well, now that I'm married and all, I am guaranteed a kiss at midnight. Not that I need an excuse to kiss him. Original comment, 4/3/2003: Maybe not a necessity, per se, but hey, it sure is icing on the cake. For me, the kiss has to be to someone who's meaningful to me (I'd only kiss my fiance', obviously, but even before then, it'd only be a boyfriend, never a stranger, not even close friends), but I don't think it's bad if others do otherwise. If someone wants to kiss a complete stranger, and it's consensual, then it's all in good fun. (The extremity of the kiss is a factor, too--most of my friends are single guys, so they get weirded out and depressed if me and my fiance' share a long kiss . . . I try to be more considerate when I remember).

while it is wonderful to share the first kiss of the new year with the one you love, it is also wonderful to suck face with as many hotties as possible because this is one of the few times during the year that this behavior will be acceptable.

An excellent way to break in the new year, with a passionate kiss from your significant other. Very romantic!

Absolutely!!! If you have someone to kiss for the New Year, that means that you'll have good luck for the next year...not to mention a good time.

I always seem to have someone kissing me at New Years, when I was young it was family, when I went out with friends, it was men in the pub and my mates. It was fun kissing someone I didn't know, but now I have my fiance, and that makes it so special. I won't kiss anyone like I kiss him!

Can't go wrong having someone to kiss at midnight but let's put it this way...if that was all you had for your New Years celebration would it be enough? Now everyone with their "partner" looking over their shoulder is excused from giving a real opinion and may now mutter the obligatory "of course" (try and make it sound sincere) but for the rest of us (those who are single and those whose "partners" aren't in the room) try and give an honest answer. It's just you and that special someone, take away everything else on this list and would it really be enough? No beer, no bubbly, no friends, etc etc. Let me be the first to say.. I don't think so.

I disagree with all you followers. Having someone to kiss at ANY moment should be about that person being special to you, and not a mere conformation to rules set up by society and tradition.

Kiss? That's all? Geez, you bunch of fuddy-duddies. (Hey, after 11 years of marriage, I can expect more, right?)

Everyone should start the new millienium with a kiss. It's good for global karma.

Definitely a NECESSITY! I have had a few of those lonely New Years' moments when you fidget and pretend to be looking across the room, like your date just walked away or something..How wonderful it is to have some one to share that magical moment with!
