Wed May 13 2009I saw Soldier Blue when it first came out and I forgot how long it took to get to the final massacre scene. It stands out for its attempt to put some reality into American history, but before it gets there it is basically a story of the relationship between Candace Bergen's character and Peter Strauss's. John Anderson (1922-1992), who often played authority figures in his many roles, plays Col. Iverson with a perfect inhumanity as he orders his troops to shoot down a truce-flag bearing Cheyenne leader, then follows it up with a command to burn down the homes and murder the women and children. American soldiers commit numerous atrocities, from decapitating a child, to graphically raping women and carrying body parts on bayonets. But before the action and gore one has to put up with an unhistorical attack by the Cheyenne on an (apparently) innocent party, a strange anachronism from Strauss explaining how his father was killed in Little Big Horn (which didn't happen for another twel... Tue Apr 21 2009"Soldier Blue" (1970) is a polemic film due to different readings of its contents and to the rough & gory pictures shown in the final assault. First I'll try to clarify some points before focusing on the story. The events shown in this movie are not historical facts, they taken from Theodore Olsen's fictional novel "Arrow in the Sun". The annihilation of the Cheyenne village is based on the real "Sand Creek massacre" occurred on November 29th 1864 when Colonel Chivington launched a devastating and unnecessary charge disregarding the white and American flag raised by the Cheyenne signifying peaceful intentions. There are some dramatic inconsistencies in the film. How is possible that Chief Spotted Wolf lead a destructive raid against the paymaster's custody and then plead he is "peaceful and friendly" to white people? Now to the film's story. A small detachment guarding the paymaster wagon and a white woman escaped from the Cheyenne is exterminated by a Cheyenne war party. Th... Read more

Thu Feb 19 2009I searched high and low for this movie! It came quickly, and I am very happy. This is an incredible movie, and should be required viewing for all high school students. This movie is based on a true historical event... and, I loved it, but it made me ashamed of the way the "white" people treated the Indians. We did horrible things, and this should be a must see in History!! I would recommend this movie to anyone
