Small and Large Parrots

I have kept and raised small and large parrots for over 30 years. I love them! They are not the pet for everyone - you need to be a dedicated person who is willing to be trained. Educating yourself is the best way to a good relationship with parrots. www.goodbirdinc.com They can be LOUD and MESSY and BITE ..... that is true.... but they can also be a tremendous source of entertainment and companionship. They can be wonderful pets if only the people know what they're dealing with. People need to have realistic expectations and time to devote to the parrot/s. I work from home and am home all the time - I've had one vacation since 1982 - Parrots are a perfect fit for my life. Much of what you hear/read on parrots is myth - and if you're considering a parrot as a pet, make sure you do your homework, it really does matter which species you get - they are all very different.

I get it. You cross a large parrot with a small parrot to get a medium parrot.

A retired coworker has two parrots and he loves them. I'm not sure of the size but when the one flew into the back of my head it felt like I was hit by a dodgeball so I'm guessing large.

I can dig the hyper-intelligent animals, and these birds are pretty damn smart from what I hear. I always feel real bad for Birds locked in cages all the time, but I've seen some that had free reign and that just seems a bit less cruel to me. I think most people know that birds are Supposedly some of the smartest animals. Crows can use tools, steal coins and reportedly use passing Cars to crack walnuts. And some Cockatiels have been trained to steal jewelry from women. And lets not forget our Ping-Pong playing pigeons.

Medium sized Parrots on the other hand, not exotic at all.

Oh I agree with Samanthais 18, parrots are not easy at all, I have 1 large bird, a Yellow Nape Amazon, she can be noisy and annoying. I try to not pay attention, she sits with another medium parrot, a Hanh's McCaw, who is very pretty also. I have no choice but clean the cage every day, they are extremely messy, my 16 year old daughter voices her displeasure of them all the time. Thankfully my husband has fallen in love with them along time ago, I also have a Quaker Parakeet, she is funny, and more quite, then I have 2 parakeets in a cage, did someone say mess? Another job, every single day to clean the cage, and give them fresh water, seeds I change every other day, it gets expensive too.

You can find a lesser sulfur crested cockatoo at my place. He laughs like me...

"medium" parrots are the best. I have a alexandrine Ringneck he is very large for his breed he can easly match upto a congo african grey. Right now Monty my alexandrine is screeching and talking trying to get a reaction from me but he wont get it. I would say for someone that has never owned a bird to get a cockatiel or a budgie most would also say conure but if i may say they to can screech pretty loud if they wanted to and id rather be bitten by my alex than a conure, i had a conures beak go almost through my finger as the beak is much more pointy than a larger beak is. Most people with lage parrot shouldnt have them as simple as that they are not pets they are family if you work alot more than a 40 hour week a parrot just isnt for you. People say 2-3 hours a day is sufficiant but in reality is 2-3 hours a day for a 2-5 year old sufficiant? so why should a pet parrot that has a mind set of a 2-5 year old be locked in a cage for that amount of time?
