Fri Jan 08 2010I love movies that are entertaining for the whole family. This was something new and introduced great memorable characters with voices that fit the animation. It was great to sit next to my 4 year old granddaughter in the theater with her giant bucket of popcorn just laugh and laugh. Mostly she was laughing at the sound of the rest of the people laughing in the theater than to a full understanding of the movie but it still makes for good memories.

Sat Sep 05 2009Dreamworks Pictures' wonderful, whimsical Shrek proves to be the latest family film to live up to its billing. With its blend of high adventure, light romance, and double-layered dialogue (which will take on a slightly different meaning for the under- and over-12 crowd), Shrek is capable of enthralling both children and their parents. In fact, this movie is so good that adults unaccompanied by offspring can venture into a theater without having to dress up in a disguise. Shrek is not a guilty pleasure for sophisticated movie-goers; it is, purely and simply, a pleasure. When it comes to computer-generated motion pictures, Shrek has once more raised the bar - and this one was already at an impressively high level in the wake of Toy Story 2 and Dinosaur. Yet Shrek outshines them both, boasting the most impressive detail and most amazingly rendered creatures of any motion picture in its class. And, although the human beings still don't look entirely realistic, they're getting close. In fa... Read more

Wed May 09 2007I saw this when it came out in theatres. An ogre named Shrek goes out with a donkey to save a princess and ends up falling in love with her. There's some nice animation and the actors are hilarious.

Thu Jul 13 2006Both one and two...in fact I kind of liked the second one better. I like a film that kids can enjoy and the adults get something out of it too.

Tue Apr 25 2006Great movie! After I bought this for my son, he drew pictures of Shrek, Donkey, and Dragon. (He frequently draws pictures of characters from his favorite cartoons.) And "Shrek 2" was even better!

Sun Feb 27 2005Great movie, for Kids and Grown Ups. I haven't laughed that hard in a very long time. Mike Myers, Eddie Murpy, Cameron Diaz they all did a great job.

Mon May 17 2004Shrek was an excellent movie. I love these family oriented films that have a really deep meaning. I actually shed a tear during the scene where all the main characters had separated after Shrek thought Fiona didn't really want him and that sad song was playing. They were all thinking about each other and it was just a moving moment for me (I had just broken up with me significant other myself lol). Just a great film, very funny too.

Sat Apr 03 2004amusing for kids of all ages! even the thirty year old ones!

Sun Feb 29 2004More like a 3.5. Admittedly, the movie had some great moments. It breaks the fourth wall once or twice and every scene involving established fairy tale characters was great. However, for an animated comedy, the movie takes itself a bit too seriously at times. Also, the bodily function gags just aren't funny. The sequel, however, looks to be an imporvement with more pop-culture references, fairy tale characters and breaking the fourth wall (judging from the trailers).

Sun Aug 10 2003This movie is so funny. I loved Eddie Murphy in it. I thought that John Lithgow played a perfect "king". It is a frequently watched movie at my house.

Tue Jun 17 2003Man, do I hate this movie. Okay, so it was a little funny, but the story and voices were complete crap.

Mon May 26 2003I absolutely loved this movie. It was so cute, because it was pretty much a spoof of all the fairy tales. It had a real good meaning involving looks isn't that important as some people make it out to be. Ooh and it was funny. I just had to say I loved this movie again.

Sat Apr 19 2003This is a boring, stupid , and easily predictible movie . Probably the worst movie I have ever seen.

Sat Mar 15 2003A pretty good film- like all Children's Movies- not one that I thought that I would be pleased with. However, they chose just the right people to do the voices and the story was surprisingly good. While keeping up with the typical "save the princess" theme, there were some great comedy scenes along the way.

Tue Feb 11 2003Cute idea, but too much humor that's inappropriate for children.

Mon Dec 09 2002Great movie. I havent met a child that doesnt like it, and the only adults that dont like it are compaining about "Adult Jokes." True, there is adult humor, but is well written so that young children will not be scandalized. They remain as innocent as they were before, and adults can sit with their children and watch the movie together.

Sun Nov 24 2002Not only did my children (2 and a 6 year old) love it but so did I!! And whenever I need to do something without my 2 year old pulling on me, I just put Shrek in. It is a great movie for everyone!!!

Mon Nov 11 2002Wow, was I disappointed and surprised with Shrek, especially the first 20 minutes or so. I found it rather crass and not terrible entertaining. 10 year old boy humor was my initial thought and even though the animation is appealing for young children, it is far too adult for young children(thus the PG rating). Warner Brothers does it right in combining entertaining animation for both young and old (especially early Warner Brothers). The kids enjoy the animation and the adult reference is subtle and clever. The ending, however, was quite endearing and poignant; that for me was the saving grace of the film.

Wed Nov 06 2002A very unique film, and what I really like about it is the way they make the jokes kind of tongue in cheek. But as they grow older, some kids will eventually catch on and it will make them appreciate the film even more. These characters are totally hilarious too. The scene where John Lithgow's character keeps asking the gingerbread man "do you know the muffin man?" just cracks me up everytime.

Sun Jul 14 2002a great movie for both children and adults, though the humor at times was directed to an older audience. the computer animation was really cool as well, and the casting was good too.

Sat Feb 09 2002Shrek deserves 5 stars. I love the Disney references. I.E Snow White, magic mirror, long lines, etc. The cast was great too. I think John Lithgow makes a good villian.

Sun Jan 13 2002This is the funniest and one of the best movies of the year!

Fri Jan 11 2002This movie was, to tell it truthfully, painfully boring. I have watched it twice now, and everyone time it gets more painful. Ignore the people that called this movie something that would entertain your family. It doesn't even come close to that. This movie was overblown and is not as good as people say it is.

Mon Dec 31 2001“Shrek” would still be excellent entertainment even without the voice of Eddie Murphy, but it wouldn’t have sparkled quite as much. This state of the art animated film never ceased to amaze and amuse on several levels at once. One of the most impressive things about it was the very realistic attention to detail. Facial expressions were especially impressive and spoke volumes about the personality of each character. Even the “lighting” was so oddly real looking I noticed a couple of times what appeared to be lens spot glare. Young children will enjoy the action and the characters but won’t get much of the more off the wall stuff at this point. Since it appears to have all the earmarks of a future classic most of them will no doubt be watching “Shrek” with their own families one-day.

Sat Nov 17 2001I loved this movie. When I first heaaard about a new coumputer animated movie, I recalled the disatrous Toy Story and other evils, but Shrek really was great. Filled with warmth and humour and a happy ending. I loved the ending

Thu Sep 06 2001For some reason I just didn't like this movie. It seems like it has too much adult humor. I mean, does a kid's movie really have to be laced with enough adult humor to require a PG rating? Just because the parents want to be entertained while taking the kids to this? If the parents want entertainment for themselves, hire a baby sitter and go out to see Bridget Jones Diary, but don't fill America's youth with foul humor even if it is 'sugarcoated'. Shrek was a dissapointment to say the least. The one good thing about it was the "I'm a Believer" remake, but again, that's for our own enjoyment, does a young child really care about Smashmouth or want a 'rock song' as their movie theme song? I would hope that the answer, even in our jaded world is still no.

Sun Jul 29 2001Shrek is not exactly what people make it out to be. It isn't very funny, and Eddie Murphy's funny voice doesn't even help.
by weiland67
Thu Jul 12 2001I thought this movie was really good. It had a lot of adult humor, which I did not expect at all because I thought it was supposed to be a kid movie. Oh well, I'm not complaining, it was worth seeing.

Fri Jul 06 2001An all around great movie. We brought our boys..ages 4 and 5..and everyone enjoyed Shrek. I sit through many childrens' movies for the sake of my kids (although I have dozed off now and again and have found myself bored to tears in others) but this ranks up there with the best. Myers, Murphy and Diaz all do an excellent job, as well as Lithgow. The animation is unbelievable and the story line is moralistic while being entertaining and humorous. My kids and my husband and I were all entertained for the duration of the movie..the stab at many Disney movies was hilarious, there was plenty of adult humor that I hope flew right over my kids' heads. I highly recommend Shrek unless you are overly sensitive and want an ultracensored childrens movie..they do say a** in reference to the donkey..the gingerbread man does say eat me and there are a few references to flatulence..for me and my family, none of this was a problem..but I do know some people who would be horrified..not us, we LOVED Sh...
