My partner and I just opened a coffee shop. We wanted a vintage theme without breaking the bank. We shopped all over Portland hitting every vintage shop and thrift store around. Our first visit to Shag we found a fantastic orange vinyl sofa with two matching chairs. Unfortunately, we didn't buy them on the spot and when we returned they had sold. Cindy, who owns Shag was very helpful in working with us. She steered us to a few pieces she was going to have reupholstered. They sold us two matching sofas that we had upholstered in orange vinyl and 4 arm chairs. We needed vinyl to keep clean in case coffee was spilled. She suggested a simple wood frame sofa with removable cushions so that we could change the color theme or replace a damaged cushion without having the whole thing replaced. Everything was done in less than 2 weeks and delivered right to our door. Shag helped us find exactly what we needed to complete our project. We bought everything well under budget and opene... We just moved into a mid-century ranch in June and have been buying appropriate furniture as we can afford it. We've been shopping all over town. At Shag, we bought our biggest pieces: a $1200 couch and a $1200 buffet. Gorgeous both of them. Shag was having a sale so we even got a discount. But we put the couch into our new (and I must say pristine and completely dry) garage for four days and then moved it into our living room, which gets the evening sun. The couch, for awhile, got direct summer sun on it. A few days later I noticed the couch was blossoming--with mildew. The smell became overwhelming. I took the couch outside, turned it over, and discovered all the staples holding the protective fabric over the underside were deeply rusted. Old rust, too, not just recent. I tore that off (no other way to get inside) and dry rodent deposits poured out--probably a half-gallon bucketful. The mildew smell was strong. I unzipped the long seat cushion and put my nose into it. Mildew. Lo... Read more

I discovered Shag when I met some friends to see a movie at the Hollywood Theater. I was blown away by their great selection of mid-century modern and vintage furniture. I found a cool Poul Hundevad serving cart that I fell in love with... I may just have to go back and get it if it is still there. Also the red electric fireplace in the front window is to die for. It is refreshing to find such a cool store amongst the thrashed out thrift and junk stores in Portland. I'm hooked and definately going back.

Driving into Portland from the airport I saw this cool shop in the Hollywood neighborhood. I've been to most other vintage furniture shops in Portland, mostly disappointing myself because they are nothing but junk or too expensive. Shag seemed to balance everything in perfect harmony. Their furniture was clean (a major concern at most other stores) and in amazing condition, and most everything was quite affordable. They had a vast group of vintage furniture, and this amazingly cool brick wall for their display window. The best part is that they set up their store to look like a room in your home instead of simply putting everything in a pile - making you climb over everything. The two employees were friendly, as we chatted for a good 10 minutes about the new Ikea opening up. As I was walking out, I spotted this amazing floor lamp that I couldn't pass up. You know what they say... it may not be around tomorrow. I will most definately be back when I move to my new house in a ... Read more

I found this store in a book called Eat Shop Portland at Powell's. When I first walked by the store, I was in such awe of the window display that I tripped on the sidewalk. I soon found myself surrounded by the nicest collection of vintage furniture I have seen in a long time. Everything was clean, and the prices were pretty good, with perhaps the exception of the stereo credenza in the front window... $1000 seemed a bit much for it, but then again, I don't know much about stereos. Anyhow, the staff seemed quite knowledgable and friendly, and the music seemed to tie the store together. I ended up buying a small chrome ball lamp that is perfect for my desk, and a mint condition LP of the Talking Heads, Stop Making Sense. Very Happy with my purchases, and will most definately visit Shag again.
