My ex-girlfriend and her friends used to love this show (to the point where "Cosmopolitans" would be all they would order when we were in a bar together) but I could never watch more than 10 minutes of it before turning aside from the superficiality and banality of it all. On one level, my own reaction to it was superficial (and probably a bit sexist). I never could fathom that so many guys would find these 4 women "so hot"-- particularly poor equine-faced Sarah Jessica Parker (who is "crying" all the way to the bank, I'm sure). I used to feel a wee bit guilty on occasion-- "Is it some residual sexist conditioning within me that keeps me from 'getting' the reason why the show is so popular with women?" But, no, there are women who can't stand it either. A female friend of mine from Jamaica had nothing but contempt for the show, and abhorred the idea that young women like her daughter might see the characters as "role models." In her no-nonsense manner, she'd say, "Is that really who I... Read more

As I’ve watched every episode in the series, I was quite hungry to see how this one would make the transition from TV to the cinema. The answer to your question? It did, although flawed. As Carrie and her three compadrinas continue four years after the point where the TV-show ended, I thought of two things: the film started off generally better than the last season of the show, and whoa, this film is almost as much a big commercial for certain designers as “I, Robot“ helped to sell everything from stereos to TV’s. Apart from that, the story circles Carrie, the central character from the show, and at times her friends. As the film is supposed to be a super-sized version of the show, it contains twists that the HBO-format never contained, as well as having everything sex turned way down. All in all, the story is quite thin and at times makes me think the writer/director of this piece should have made room for more input. Still, I don’t think the planned theatrica follow-up will do this f... Read more

I love this show. I love how Carrie is so self-indulging. I love to see a single girl in her 30s dressed in cute shit, journal-keeping on her little laptop. And of course they have gay friends. It's fun to be a girl and Carrie does it so well. Perhaps it is a little one dimensional and perhaps real women in new york aren't so financially secure and infantile. But Carrie...the world she lives in is charmed because she herself is spirited. I shudder to imagine how a real-life Carrie would look like, but as a 30 min show, as performance of "modern single girl in the city," it's inspiring and relateable.

The plot of this show (if you want to call it that) a group of sex starved women sitting around talking about sex, plotting on how to get sex and then bitching when said sex isn't very good or complaining that the male in the equation doesn't call them afterwards. Granted it's entertainment for some but boring and mind numbing for the rest of us.

Witty, if a little mono-thematic, and I'll watch a show with regular appearances of Kim Catrell au naturel before I'd tune in Oprah or Ellen.  I pointed out to my wife, who likes the show but never watched it until it was in re-runs, that all of the male characters in the show were one dimensional, underwritten and generally just there as plot devices.  She politely informed me that I have now experienced the feeling that women generally get when watching every other show on TV, or movie in the theatre, or play by David Mamet.

The poughkipie (spelling) line was fall out of my my chair stuff....Chick flick be damn, all them women looked good. This one will go into our DVD collection...this is a really feel good movie, well written and well acted and the music was the bomb as well.....

I had heard how great this show was, but when I finally saw it I realized how stupid it was. Listening to the opinions and stories of the characters on this show makes me want to bang my head against the wall repeatedly.

I love this show. True, it isn't for everyone, but I'm still entertained. When the show first came out I thought...wow, they have sunk to a new low....this is the stupidest show. Then I actually sat down and watched it. I got hooked.

I just watched my first episode of this show about twenty minutes ago- primarily because nothing else was on. I got bored halfway through and found it a real struggle to sit through the second half. What's all the fuss about? According to the Internet Movie Database, this show recieved FIFTY-FIVE freaking Emmy nominations! Granted it only won seven of them, but that's still seven more than it deserves. I admit to a certain amount of arrogance in thinking of myself as a scholar of comedy, but scholar or no scholar, I do know that comedy shows are supposed to be funny, and Sex and the City, with the exception of an occasional line or two, just plain ain't funny. Maybe you have to be a woman to appreciate it. The word overrated doesn't begin to describe this show. I just don't get it.

My fiance and I watch this show on DVD almost every night. It's typically smart and always funny. I recommend season two and season six. They both represent the essential heart of the show without the burden of heavy long-term plotlines.

Surprised that this show rates so low. I find it very funny, as a straight male no less. Of course it is unrealistic, but most TV is, even the so called reality shows. I cant put my finger on exactly what it is, except that the dialogue is so frank and open about sex that it just gives me the giggles. Charlotte and her troubles with her husband had me busting my gut. Samantha is just a high class hooker, but she admits it, which is quite something. Carrie's musing about the opposite sex I usually find intriguing. Miranda's character probably is the least interesting. HBO is not the same without new episodes of this classic.

A comedy about four thirty-something women who share their adventures of dating and sex in NYC. My roommate has all the seasons on DVD and I got hooked. Lame excuse but it's the truth. I love Manhattan, I appreciate the dating stories, and I like the humor. The cast portrays four very different women and opinions.

Maybe it is because I am not female or gay but I do not see any thing funny about this show. Some of the girls look good but that still does not save this highly over rated show.

Has to be ranked in the Top-50 TV Series of all times. Consistently witty with refreshing storylines and likeable characters. The 4 girls are all talented and desirable. Kristin Davis is a goddess, as is Kim Cattrell. I also like Sarah Jessica Parker, even though she has an eerie resemblance to Dee Snider. Of course, the show benefits from the HBO factor, as much of the humor is derived from the very raunchiness depicted. I don't think it would have done as well as a network series, as evidenced by the sanitized airings shown on TBS. Still, even these shows are far funnier than the best episode of Gay Friends or Will & Gay [To be honest, Sex and the City did the best job of any series in making the gay characters quite funny].

The phrase boring crap has never been so appropriate for anything before. The three times i actually bothered to watch it i developed a severe headache. I watched it firstly out of curiosity and found it to be rubbish, then i watched it for a second time hoping for an improvement but it didn't fail to disappoint and the third time i watched it was because sarah michelle gellar was guest starring in it but that episode was as bad as the rest. The 4 women are irritating old bitches who should be hospitalised. Carrie is so ugly she makes an orangutans ass look pretty, Samantha is an old whoare, Charlotte's constant whining like a 7 year old is as irritating as having caramel stuck to your teeth, and Miranda walks like an anoerexic penguin and has the personality of a paperclip. It has none of the characteristics of an entertaining show. It is not remotely funny and the storylines are dull to say the least. I'm not sure which demographic it is made for but i can say that whoever watches th... Read more

Now...this...this takes the cake. This show truly boggles any intelligent mind. And, even worse, now, the show is available on BASIC cable--where any young person can access it. The actual show is a terrible mess of horrible nothing. Profanity runs so rampant on the show that one wonders if the people that write this show even have a dictionary. Touted as a comedy, one has to wonder where the comedy exactly is. Hearing the f-word twenty times in a five minute period isnt amusingits disturbing. The plots are as amoral as can be, focusing onyou guessed itsex and nothing else. Make no mistake about it, there are no role models here. Also lacking is optimism and unreality. The writers obviously have no imagination by grounding themselves in this perverse sex-centric universe. The acting is terrible, too. Its amazing that shows like this get praised and brilliant shows like Star Trek: Voyager and Pokemon get looked down upon. HBO doesnt stand for Home Box Officeit stands for Home Body Odor.

About as funny as syphilis. What a great idea for a show. Get 4 unappealing middle aged women whingeing on about how crap their sex lives are. Sarah Jessica Parker has a face like Smarty Jones with colic and an irritating whine of a voice. At least it's now over but that wont stop TV broadcasters from playing endless repeats.

I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! It wasn't meant to do anything other than just simply entertain. Before Sex and the City there was this horrible stigma of women aged 30+ (especially women Samantha's age in their 40's), that once they've settled down, got married and had children that life was simply not fun anymore. Well along came Sex and the City and turned this ugly stigma on its head to show that women could still lunch with their girlfriends and talk about their past night experinces, can still go clubbing, have a baby and a career, be married and have fun, can talk about sex just as openly as men - enjoy it and not be classed as a sl*t and just generally learn to love and enjoy life no matter how old you are.

I have watched a couple of episodes, only to see what the hubbub was about, and I am still wondering!! I have no idea of the charactors names but the blonde main charactor?? This is considered beautiful?? THe red head?? Looks pretty used up. In fact they all do. I really feel bad for all the women out there that watch this trash and feel as though they don't have a life because it can't compare to this show. If this show was "real life" these four women would be suicidal. Absolute, unadulterated CRAP!!

I think this is a great show, and to those who say it's all about sex, I disagree. This show has excellent writing, witty insights, and more often than not expose thoughts that most women probably have had at least once in their life. The sex may be too extreme for some people, but I admire the fact it has the guts to put it out there and cover issues to an extent that other network shows cannot. I also think Sarah Jessica Parker is great; she deserves every Best Actress award she has gotten for this show.

Not that funny and not that sexy, scattered frontal nudity notwithstanding. Perhaps it's just my "Y" chromosome talking, but why should I be interested in the romantic travails of a bunch of tightly-wrapped New York Women who endlessly bitch about the lack of good available men in the City but who wouldn't know a good man if they fell over him because they're too busy chasing after jerks?! Sorry to vent like that, but when I lived in New York I met so many women who fit this show's stereotypes that HBO could probably squeeze a sitcom out of *my* romantic travails. And it probably wouldn't be any more depressing than this one.

I absolutely love this show. it is aimed at women, so I can understand why men might not get the humour. Its a show that I can relate to. All of us have love issues at some time or another. And lets face it, when you are with a group of close friends, sex does come up, alcohol starts flowing and the laughs begin. It asks some questions that I've asked myself, and it can make me laugh at it as well. I unfortunately missed some of the episodes when I was staying at my parents, so I'm hoping they'll repeat the episodes. Thumbs up!

We rented Sex and the City from our local video store. I had heard so much praise for this show.We got one of those DVDs that had more than one show on it. We stopped it during the middle of the second episode. My goodness the title of the show is exactly all this show is about.Talking about sex, getting sex, bedhopping sex. I found the show to be unfunny. I just do not find a show about "getting some" enjoyable. the only reason I am giving it a two is there are some good actors in this show.Call me a prude but I do not find a show that the only thing the characters can think about is sex.Gee there are others things in this world than just that. I am also not thrilled with the morals on this show.
