Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic has the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, a rich history and many world famous resorts, such as Charlisangels Exotic Resort in the north coast. 3.5 million tourists visit the island each year, making it the no. 1 vacation destination in the Caribbean area.

Trust me on this!!!!...DON'T DO IT, DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I MADE DON'T GO THERE

a city and country for that matter, full of bigmouthed hispanics.........throw in bush, cheney & zell miller and youve got my visualization of hell.

Surprisingly, visiting Santo Domingo was one of the best decisions we made on our cruise this past year. We arrived in La Romana, only to find that no one spoke English (which I don't hold against them at all, after all, WE came there not knowing THEIR language) which was discouraging. There wasn't a lot around the port and from what we were told by the ships crew, there wasn't much to see in La Romana. We were just about to turn back and head for the pool on the boat, when another cruise ship passenger approached us, he asked if we wanted to join a tour he had negotiated with a cab driver, we said "yes". It turned out the passenger spoke fluent Spanish so we basically had a translator. We ended up traveling to Santo Domingo and it was something else, all the history and culture, it was unbelievable, I've never been anywhere so historic. A very historic and lovely city. The poverty is of course disconcerting, but look beyond it and try and feel the atmosphere of 500 years of history and shadows of Islamic Spain. The old city should not be missed, but take the 'tour guides' at the musuems with a grain of salt. The best food is at restaurants run by expatriate Italians and Germans.

Find a beautiful all-inclusive resort on Punta Cana and enjoy!! Going into town isn't enjoyable, nor is it necessary if you find the right resort--The Melia resorts are gorgeous!!
