Salt Lake is on of the most pituresque cities in the world. The people are nice to a fault. It is big enough that you have most the advatages of a major metro area, and small enough to aviod the major drawbacks of most major metro areas. Plus the recreation is the best in the world!

Nice town. The mountains are beautiful and surround the city.  The city itself is very clean, and quiet - I didn't hear one horn during rush hour.  This brings together another point, which is very little traffic in Salt Lake City.  With an under-populated 170K or so it's a rare find.  Talking to a few locals, the music scene is fairly vibrant, and there's a free concert every Wednesday in a park downtown.  Skiing is about 20 minutes away and there are some deals like $15 for four hours of skiing.  Certainly doesn't have the vibrance of many other cities that come to mind but for an outdoor minded person Salt Lake could be a good alternative.

Salt Lake is pretty enough but if you've seen one batch of mountains, you've seen them all. The people appear to be clannish, and it's hard to find a drink. Take plenty of reading material.

I've lived in Salt Lake City for a little over a year now,and here's what I can tell you about it. The first thing you'll notice is the mountains,as you drive down I-15. They're on both sides of the highway. And truthfully, they're all that's good about the city. Yes, there are bars, liquor stores and even strip clubs in the city. The people who say there aren't couldn't possibly have lived here. There are sports stadiums, if that's your thing. If you're coming in from points East, you'll find the prices re:goods and housing a bit inflated(considering the not-at-all improved quality). If you usually work blue collar, don't bother coming here(unless you're starting a business). The jobs have been given away in advance to Hispanic illegals that have been smuggled in at the behest of Utah employers. I kid you not. Utah is Mexico's bitch. If you want to come here for schooling, don't bother unless you're Mormon. The education system sucks. Heard about the evolution vs. creationism debate? Yea... Read more

Salt Lake City is has great scenery, but just can't recommend it. Im not a Mormon, and I could care less what people believe in so religion wasnt a problem for me. I tried to find something to do but there is nothing. Good luck trying to find a bar, I asked started looking for a bar, but when I asked where one was I would get looks I cant even describe. I'll give it 2 stars for the scenery.

Wow. After reading these I've seen 3 things come up; Mountains (beautiful view), Mormons, and Polygamy. I find it ironic and also quite humorous how people can go into a city, and always find something to whine and bitch about. "Can't find anything to drink", "Big house=Man with 5 wives", "mormons run the state". Quit BITCHING PEOPLE!

I enjoyed the view when I was at the airport. It's a nice looking town that's needs to be invaded by outsiders. It's ripe for the pickings. Open up bars and strip clubs. Lets intensify the cultural war that already exist there.

Typical Rate It All comment: I'm from a liberal city (see: fun, exciting, open-minded, diverse, intelligent) and we are so open minded and accepting of everyone culture and religion. I visited SLC and omigod! That is the most conservative(boring) place I've been to. Of course it's the only place in fly-over country I've visited-and I only went for my work. Everyone is so white, close-minded and boring, and worst of all EVERYONE is Moron, oh I mean Mormon, ha ha ha! It's the law there that all men have to have ten wives and they have to marry at least one sister or cousin. It's also against the law to drink alcohol in Utah and Mormons believe it's a sin to have fun. Did I mention that this town is conservative, and WHITE, how can a place be open-minded and fun with so many white Mormons?! As I walked around downtown (yeah right, try comparing SLC downtown to NYC or Chicago) everyone stared at me because they knew I wasn't Mormon and conservative. I asked one guy where I could f... I imagine left is best was posting tongue in cheek, but I'm one liberal who would like to visit Salt Lake City someday. I want to see the stark scenery and the beautiful church. I could survive without a drink so the lack of bars would not distress me. I have my doubts about Mormonism, but there's no doubt that the history and culture of this creed is fascinating. Sometimes I wonder if there might be something to it, though, because most of the Mormons I have met have been very warm and well-mannered.

The only good things I can say about Salt Lake City is it is in an amazingly beautiful setting with striking mountains at it's doorstep. Also it is a very clean city, probably one of the cleanest I've ever seen. Otherwise I could not believe how painfully boring SLC really is. I walked around downtown really making an effort to find some atmosphere or something to do and there was nothing! It's just a generic city with a lot of modern sprawl, cookie cutter housing and chain restaurants. If your coming here, skip the city and head for the ski resorts or the magnificent national parks that the beautiful state of Utah has to offer.

I was surpised how much I liked it when I visited. It isn't really a city in any traditional sense, but it is a nice sleepy town in an awesome setting if you like the outdoors. As a visitor, I was impressed by how nice the people are and how safe I felt. Great skiing nearby in Park City. I'm not sure if it is really a city, but it definitely deserves a higher ranking on this list- seriously, the outdoor setting alone puts it well about 90% of the cities on this list.

Salt Lake is an eye appealing city, but beside skiing, there wasn't much to do there. We actually stumbled upon one of the very very few bars in downtown Salt Lake, and had a great time there. But residents of Salt Lake don't take to outsiders well...at least that's the impression I got. Went there once and probably won't go again...

Salt Lake is pretty enough - set against the beautiful backdrop of the Rockies. Several friends of mine and I were visiting for a tournament, and we were donwtown and asked where we might get a drink. Look, I know sometimes people say that residents of a city are friendly or unfriendly. But this was unbelievable. We got a look like we had just asked for prostitutes. Worse, someone else *behind* them gave us the same look. I think religion is a good thing, and I have nothing personally against Mormons. But I think it's a little dangerous when a religion runs a city - and Salt Lake's a great example of that. Very insular, and a little scary. I have heard that the city is getting more cosmpolitan, so perhaps I should visit again. But I think that if I'm going to go see a city by the Rockies, I'd prefer Denver.

True, LDS may be in charge of SLC and the state of Utah, but the Mormon religion makes up slightly more than 1/3 of Salt Lake City proper.

Salt Lake City is one of many unique cities in the country. The mountains are spectacular and the nearby skiing is awesome. The city felt more clean and for the most part, there were friendly people there. I could raise my children there, Utah has one of the lower crime rates of the U.S. in violet crimes, murders, robbery, aggravated assults. There are strip clubs and bars for the adults, but the laws are more strict.

Went to Salt Lake last summer- first off, the mountain backdrop adjacent to the city is beautiful, with no haze or smog to obsure the view. However, many of the city's attractions are religious based...if you're offended by the mormon religion, I would suggest not visiting this city. The downtown is clean but antiseptic, and seemed to be dead at any time of day during the weekend. I found the nightlife to be severly lacking here, and the liquor laws are definitely a headache. My friends and I were walking around downtown at 10pm during Fourth of July and the only thing that was going on were the cars (all filled to the brim with people) driving by gawking at us. Maybe its illegal to walk around in Salt Lake after sundown. Maybe they think its funny to see stupid tourists attempting to find nightlife in a city that dosen't really have one. One thing I found interesting is that the 'perky mormon' stereotype didn't apply here, it appeared like everyone had a permanent frown on their... Read more

Salt Lake City is truly a beautiful city with clean streets, nice looking houses, and really warm, friendly citizens. I do not think the skyline is the greatest out of all the cities in the country, but it still has temple square which is just absolutely beautiful. One must see the temple in SLC to truly understand the beauty behind it. Salt Lake City is definately a city I would live in if there were more jobs available in the area.

This place is overrun by Mormons and you know what they believe.....THE MORMON CHURCH TEACHES The black race is a cursed people. "Not only was Cain called upon to suffer, but because of his wickedness, he became the father of an inferior race. A curse was placed upon him and that curse has been continued through his lineage and must do so while time endures. Millions of souls have come into this world cursed with a black skin and have been denied the privilege of Priesthood and the fullness of the blessings of the Gospel" (Joseph Fielding Smith, The Way to Perfection, p. 102). (Although it became expedient for the Mormon church to open the Priesthood to blacks in 1978, the alleged revelation did not change Mormon doctrine regarding the penalty of being black. This revelation also directly contradicted established Mormon doctrine.)

A beautiful place. The mountains around the city are not only great to look at, but fun to climb. The people of Salt Lake City take pride in their lawns. The town is known for great ice cream parlors. And it's a place with a personality all its own. Do I agree with Mormonism? NO!!!! But it's still a great place to visit. We used to go there for our family reunions.

I think that it's funny how ROCK GODDESS and Crystal Lovestorm place blame on CarrieAnn for something she had no control over. I love the mountains here and the beautiful lakes. That's what's good about Salt Lake City. But what's bad (and this ruins it alot) is that it's run by corrupt people. (No, Not all Mormons. Just the ones who run this place.) They give all mormons a bad name! The Mormons in Salt Lake City are brutal when enforcing their religion upon others. They distance and seperate themselves from anyone else. And that's why I'm giving SLC only 3 stars.

Hard to get lost since the addresses are coordinates. That's about the best thing about the hole. Like all places ruled by religious adherants who seek to impose their lifestyle on others (Kabul, Afghanistan should be SLCs sister city) there is a feeling that you are being observed and judged all the time. It's oppressive. Utahns told to avoid gossip in church misinterpret this and simply avoid making contact with people outside their clique. It has to be the most boring place for it's size, unless you can work your way into a quilt-making group or like growing corn in your back-yard in your spare time. It's not the biggest per-capita consumer of anti-depressants for nothing - pretty strange for a people who claim to have the truth. It appears that while alcohol and other "illicit" drugs are frown upon, the Mormons hook into the prescription drugs with gusto. Alcohol runs to neighbouring states are a reality on Sundays. Child abuse and domestic violence are also epidemic, showing how... Read more

Beautiful surroundings but the town seems really creepy when you think it is run by such a powerful, wealthy and tight knit group. Overall, I was very unimpressed with this place. For my travel money, the Mormons can keep their strange little town and hideously ugly Salt Lake, which, from what I observed, is nothing more than an oversized cesspool.

Salt Lake City is the most disgusting and boring place I have ever been. Once you finally adjust to the god aweful stench of Utah, you cannot get over how absolutely little there is to do in the Morman's capital.
