Mon Feb 01 2010Rock Sugar is a bit hit or miss. Some stuff on the menu is great, other stuff is just strange. I've been there twice, and the first time I loved it, the second I didn't at all. The drinks are great though, so go for happy hour and check out the place.

Sun Jan 31 2010Go here for lunch. They have a recession priced pre-fixe where they offer either 3 courses for $12.95 or 4 courses for $14.95. I went for the Dine LA menu which basically offered the same choices. The caramel chicken is seriously deeelish and the coconut doughnuts are something to be had.

Mon Dec 14 2009Recently had an event at Century City Mall and since Houston's is always a 3 hour wait decided to try this one. What a great surprise. Yummy pan asian dishes, good service, actually kind of cool interior. A bit of a mega restaurant but respectable for any date. Tons of options on dumplings and currys and fish and... really there is quite an extensive list.

Sun Dec 13 2009The decor is amazing...you walk into a nice patio with white sofas and candle lit tables and once you enter...well, you just have to go check it out. The food is good. I've had better thai food for cheaper but you're paying for the dining atmosphere. It'd be a good place to take a date before catching a movie at AMC.

Fri Aug 21 2009I love this place. It's become one of my favorites. Rock Sugar looks like it belongs in a Vegas hotel. The food is amazing. Great appetizers too! They also have a great drink menu. You seriously have to try this place. Great for dates or just a bunch of friends.

Tue Jul 07 2009Most of us know of a restaurant where the food they serve is just delicious but the place is just so-so, we often refer to them as “ a hole in the wall”. ROCKSUGAR is just the complete opposite….after visiting the place last weekend, this place is a “BIG EMPTY” hole in the wall, nothing much to offer in terms of food. RockSugar’s décor and ambiance is well done, very impressive, but management forgot to put the same attention to their cuisine. Me and my husband with another couple decided to try the place since we were at Century City last Saturday. We provided ourselves enough time, about 2 ½ hours to have dinner before going to the cinema for the 9:15 pm screening. The menu is well written, lots of choices with very interesting details, one can’t help salivating as you make your pick. I ordered the black cod. My husband who is not a big fish lover ordered the noodles with chicken; our friends both ordered the salmon dinner entrees. As we were ordering the waiter to... Read more

Thu May 14 2009Great service and a fun place to eat. The food is maybe a 5 on a 10 scale. Mediocre is a generous description.

Tue May 05 2009Really cool place with good Asian fusion. It's a bit pricey, and the portions are small, so it's not an everyday hangout place.

Sat May 02 2009The waitress first greeted my girlfriend and I for lunch espousing about the orgin of the restaurant and the fact that the owner/founder was the famous "whatever his name was". He was the owner of the successful Rock Sugar in the valley somewhere she says, then gloats about this guy for another couple minutes. Restaurant Owner Tip #1: nobody cares about your fame in the valley with one restaurant we admittedly never heard of, or had been to. She then says, everything is ala carte, and recommends the "trust me" entree. This is prepared by the chef and just "trust" that it's devine... about the same level of trust I have in this owner being famous, so we said pass on the "trust me". Restaurant Owner Tip #2: All the left over fish which was uneaten or over-ordered can't be wrapped up in a "trust me" lunch box and passed off as your high margin plate under a clever marketing name; people simply aren't that naive, they'll eat what they want, and judging by the reviews, empirically... Sat Apr 11 2009Sisters took me to this place for my B-Day..They sat us down right away on the beautiful Heated Terrace near the waterfall...We order everything from our appetizers to our main Dish with RICE...in less than five minutes they bring us one of the dishes without the rice....No Big Deal...We figured that they had given us someone else's Dish because we hadn't received our appetizers first and because the lady looked CONFUSED when she brought it to our table.... Which turned out to be true (the table next to us ordered the same thing) We finally get our appetizers...We eat that...Taste was Great! We ordered a Dish that only goes well with rice. My sister ordered Glazed Shrimp and I ordered Salmon. Nothing comes on the side with the order so we obviously wanted our RICE to eat with it...We waited about 5 minutes...The waitresses move so fast that we couldn't even stop anyone to ask for the rest of our food so we can eat. Finally our waitress stops by and ask how is everything...We tell her... Read more

Mon Apr 06 2009Sunday lunch. Restaurant was virtually empty (that should've been a sign). Wife and I shared three apps and ONE entree. We had one (small) glass of sake each, no dessert. Bill was nearly $90. Too pricey for lunch on a Sunday (at a mall, no less). Service was good and informed but the food was mediocre at best.

Tue Mar 31 2009A GROUP(6) OF US ATE HERE A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO AND LOVED IT. FROM THE APPETIZERS TO THE MAIN MEALS EVERYTHING WAS GREAT. WE ATE FAMILY STYLE AND SHARE 4 OR 5 APPETIZERS AND THEN SHARED 5 MAIN COURSES AND RICE. EVERYTHING WAS GONE! LOVED IT ALL. THE FRIED WHOLE FISH WAS REALLY THE BIG SUCCESS. THE WAIT STAFF WAS ATTENTIVE WITHOUT BEING BOTHERSOME. JOEL OUR WAITER WAS GREAT AND HAD A GREAT BACK UP TEAM OF ASST. WAITERS. THIS PLACE WAS SO GOOD WERE ALREADY HAVE RESERVATIONS AGAIN.

Sat Feb 21 2009Rock Sugar reminds me a lot of Tao in Las Vegas, a lot of thought was put into the atmosphere and the architecture really gives the restaurant a cool feeling. The food was awesome, we ordered the Princess Shrimp, the Beef and the Sugar Snow Peas, every dish was fantastic and came with a healthy portion. I also ordered the Orange Mojito which was great but not cheap. Everything was great but not inexpensive, it was about $100 for the two of us but we also got drinks and dessert, you could definitely eat there for less $. I would recommend Rock Sugar to all my friends and I can't wait to go back.

Fri Feb 13 20091st off the decor: I found the whole Liberace does the cavernous far east thing a little bit jarring - it's kind of like eating in an airplane hanger spray painted gold. Still I?m ready to let ambiance go in a restaurant if the food is killer, though unfortunately at RS this is not the case. Conceptually RS?s cuisine is intended to be "pan-asian excluding China and Japan". Inexplicable Sino-Japanese grudge notwithstanding, the phonebook of a menu is comprehensive, but that variety is moot, for the dishes one orders bears little to no resemblance to the food actually served. You see, as the plates arrive, one can?t help but notice their remarkable similarity - specifically, mound after mound of greasy meat and sliced onion, all slathered in the same ubiquitous mystery sauce. Variety?s understudy is a noxious potpourri of odd garnishes and dips - i.e. the ?yogurt sauce? suspiciously resembling bad sour cream. Unfortunately, the food?s doneness doesn?t share such a consistency, an... Read more

Fri Feb 06 2009I guess this would be a fun place to take the kids. I had a meeting there at the suggestion of a client. I was overwhelmed by the decor. the food is OK. Service was very good. I don't think I'd come back on my own.

Wed Jan 21 2009I will never go back to this place. The restaurant looks nice but everything about it is horrible. The food is mediocre for the price but, it is the staff the makes the experience a nightmare. The night manager Sophia (or so she said because she refused to give me her card) must have been pulled from a truck stop. She is rude and disrespectful with the mouth of a truck driver. She even resorted to pushing two of us while yelling, ?get out of my restaurant?. Then she tells told us she has a ?law degree?. I guess that was supposed to be a treat since we were doing absolutely nothing wrong but trying to have a discussion with her. Maybe she was trying to justify the fact that she resorted to violence. All of this happened in front of the entire restaurant and she could care less. I?m sure making the dining experience for many unpleasant. If this place wants to last, at the very least they should get rid of that manager.

Sat Jan 10 2009Beautiful outdoor patio, amazing environment, to match the amazing food. Everything here was delicious. We went with a big group of friends to try it out and ordered different dishes. They were all great, and the service was impeccable. The manager, Eric Russell, approached our table to check if everything was to our liking, which was a nice touch! Our waiter was excellent and kept an eye on us and made us feel at home. He made great suggestions for their most popular dishes...and desserts...mmmm..... mouth watering! BTW, must try the claypot beef, it was superb. I definitely will be coming back to this place!

Wed Jan 07 2009I'll say it again. DELICIOUS! Two of my girlfriends and I dined at Rock Sugar last Saturday night. We'd been dying to try it for awhile, and I am soooo glad we finally did. Sure the wait was a little long, but the service and food was well worth the wait. Our server Adam, was phenomenal. Since we had never been there before we didn't know what to order. Adam led the way and gave us a variety of the "must try" items. The Samosas were absolutely mouth watering! The Cumquat Chicken was amazing! And OMG! The Banana Custard Cake was the best thing my lips have ever tasted. Truly. I am salavating right now as I am writing this. The manager (didn't get his name--he was tall with a goatie) came over to our table to say hi and to make sure we were enjoying our dinner. So we were sure to let him know how wonderful Adam was and how DELICIOUS our meal was. If you are craving Asian food with a twist---I definitely recommend Rock Sugar. DELICOUS!

Sun Dec 21 2008We went to Rock Sugar for a colleagues birthday/holiday lunch. The food was great and the ambiance was too, but the service was not. On making the reservation, the hostess was obnoxious and misinformed. She tried to put us at 2 seperate tables, however, when we arrived, there were two tables easily put together for us. Our waiter picked on our poor pregnant co-worker 4 times throughout the meal. He corrected her pronunciation of a menu item (rude) and even asked her how much longer she would be. Obviously he wanted to turn our table over quickly to make more money which made us feel very rushed. As a former server I absolutely HATE when servers do this...its unneccesary and RUDE. If he hadn't already added 20% to our check he would have gotten a far worse tip. Other than that.... the meal was good and the place is decorated beautifully.

Wed Dec 17 2008Stay away from Eric Russell - he'll ruin any corporate event or dinner. Because of him - experience was well below average. Too bad - The Food was good and restaurant is beautiful. Definitely a very nice spot to check out as long as Mr. E.R. can be avoided.

Thu Oct 02 2008I had dinner here with a friend on a medium-busy evening. We were seated in a few minutes and were very attentively served. The decor is imaginative, impressive and still welcoming. The music was a bit downbeat, but cool enough. We started off with cocktails; both the mojito and blood-orange sangria were good. We ordered summer rolls (the non-fried ricepaper rolls, which were decent and served with good sauces), the ginger eggplant (recommended by our waitress, and excellent), ginger fried rice (served with a sunny-side-up egg on top, also quite good), and kumquat chicken with snap peas (pretty good, especially if you eat a bit of pickled kumquat with eat bite). We finished with the molten chocolate cake and coffee ice cream (the cake was barely warm and just average, but the ice cream was fantastic). Overall, I'd say it's a very ambitious undertaking, spanning so many cuisines and trying to provide such a lush atmosphere. They pull it off fairly well, though one could certainly find... Read more

Tue Sep 16 2008I went there yesterday for a birthday lunch with a co-worker. We had been there once before when they first opened and thought the food was pretty good. WHAT HAPPENED!!! It was horrible. The spring rolls were tasteless and the shrimp tastes old and frozen, the ginger rice was dripping with grease, and the caramel chicken was dried out which I couldn't figure out because it was drenched in too sweet sauce. The wine list is a bit interesting. The service started out ok and then got horrible. Took me about 20 minutes to get the check. I mentioned to the waiter that it was a birthday celebration and all he did was wish happy birthday to the birthday girl...I wasn't trying to get a free desert, it just would have been nice for him to have sent something out...very expensive for the poor quality of food..wouldn't go back.

Sat Sep 06 2008As a local foodie, I was disappointed by the quality of the food and service. The menu was too ambitious for the kitchen staff and not ideally suited for a mass-production environment. Service was poor (I was seated 25 minutes after my reservation by a surly host who was quite unapologetic), and the food on the whole was greasy and doused with heavy sauces that failed to capture the complex flavors of this type of cuisine. Little thought was given to presentation. Drinks were $10-16 each, and probably the only items that were executed with reasonable aptitude. We had the tuna appetizer (very simple, drowning in sauce, overpriced at $15 for maybe 2 ounces), the caramel chicken (MSG-heavy and again swimming in hoisin sauce), wok-fried bok choy, and claypot beef (ok, but very greasy). We also had 3 drinks total, and the bill came out to be $130 for 2 with tip included. There are probably 50 restaurants in LA that would serve up an exceptional meal for $130, but this was not one of them.

Fri Aug 29 2008This is a tourist trap and hardly a place for locals, unless its a special ocassion. The decor makes the room attractive, but the service and food is quite ordinary, while moderately to high priced. The drinks are incredibly small and pricey. We tried two different appetizers and three other dishes which left us wanting to go to our local Thai, Indian, or whatever for dishes we know taste better and cost less. The overuse of sauces on everything from the rice cake type bread to almost every dish serve, promote more of a fast food presentation that serious culinary work. I think the ambitious menu is too much to handle for the chef and staff, as the latter is instructed to oversell the descriptions, as if buying a car. I would not go back. Perhaps over time the dishes can be refined. At least places like P.F. Chang's are to the point and don't try to mix everthing that comes to mind. There's even things like cheesecake and creme brulee to top off a confusing mish-mash of cuisines, doing... Read more

Wed Aug 27 2008Beautiful, creative decor - takes you out of the shopping mall and into a wonderland of Asian artifacts. The service is typical Cheesecake Factory freindly and efficient. The food we sampled was all interesting, tasty and plentiful. I recommend this place to anyone wanting an experience along with a great meal. They take reservations and they honor them on time -

Wed Jul 16 2008From the outdoor patio with a waterfall wall to the inside dining room with its golden statues and ornate furniture, this restaurant feels like walking into some Southeast Asian palace. The group behind popular chain the Cheesecake Factory have created a menu that encompasses Indian, Thai, Chinese and other Southeast Asian culinary traditions. It?s an actual, regular-sized menu, not like the novel of dish and drink choices you get at the Cheesecake Factory. As a substitute for bread, Rock Sugar gives you large, fried, white rice crackers with a marinara-like sauce when you sit down. Anyway, my friend I ordered the claypot beef and the princess chicken. The latter dish, while incredibly moist, was really more or less fried chicken that had no special spice or flavor component. The claypot beef, named after the dish it?s served in, was INCREDIBLE. The meat had an intense richness yet spicy kick to it. My friend and I shared the coconut donuts with passion fruit sauce for dessert. YUM! De... Read more

Mon Jul 07 2008Stopped by twice the week after they opened, here's a brief rundown: *PROS* Very diverse Asian influenced menu. Very good presentation of food, high quality ingredients. Gorgeous design, perfect music, intoxicating atmosphere. As usual with Cheesecake Factory, very nice and helpful staff, managers bartenders and waiters. Very moderate prices, our dinner for two with drinks and a split appetizer and two entrees with dessert was $64, probably comparable in price to Grand Luxe and CCFactory. The salmon and green curry chicken are excellent. Easy access self parking at mall or valet parking right in front. *CONS* The bar area is too small. I understand they are trying to make it more of a family establishment, but the bar could have been expanded a bit without compromising the family casual experience. The long communal table in the middle of the bar isn't very intimate with a date. The chairs and table outside before you walk in are great, but the firepits in the middle of the table m... Read more

Mon Jul 07 2008Like stepping into a Southeast Asian Fantasyland, this sprawling purple-and saffron-colored restaurant is a dreamscape of exaggerated Eastern imagery with Burmese Buddha statues, gold leaf-overlaid columns, ornately carved teak panels, even a glittering golden dragon sculpture. Named after an ingredient often used by Asian chefs, the restaurant features an extensive menu with regional specialties designed to appeal to American palates. Dishes include Thai noodles and curries, sizzling Indian tikka and tandoori rice options, Vietnamese pho, and other appetizers, salads and entrees inspired by the cuisines of Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. For dessert, French-Asian hybrid sweets--including kaffir-lime cheesecake and a trio of kulfi (Indian style ice cream) in mango, pistachio and Ovaltine--are prepared in an onsite bakery.
