My old truck breaks down sometimes and I have to walk. I am against this idea as a permanent deal. Bikes don't work for me since one of my ex-wives kicked out all the spokes on the back wheel of my Schwinn.

This is a nice easy way to save on petrol. I live just over 5 miles away from work so instead of driving in I cycle instead. If it's snowing I do take the bus, but at least it's not as bad as driving in (especially as my car has fairly high emissions too). If it's raining, wear waterproofs - unless you live an extremely long way away or have health problems that prevent you from cycling there is no reason to not cycle instead of drive.

I have a 20 minute ride to work that is passable 8 months of the year (in spite of the fact that irishgit will insist that snow ploughs are roaming the streets of Winnipeg 10 months of the year). I have lots of friends who pedal right through the winter, but that seems like extremism to me. I'm lucky to have a reasonably safe route to work and not too far to go. The 20 minutes plus securing my bike and getting dressed for work is roughly equivalent to the bus commute time. Maybe a few minutes longer than the drive when you include the time all-in for parking and walking the last block to the office. It's good for my physical and mental health, pocket book, traffic, and maybe makes a miniscule dent in the environment. I primarily do it because I hate driving in rush hour. I become a cranky middle-aged man behind the wheel of a mini-van when I'm trying to get across the bridge in a long slow crawl.

Easy for me to say, since I work at home. However, I bike to the grocery store (six miles, round trip) three or four times a week. Downside: Many who see me assume I'm among the bike riding adults in the community who've lost their drivers' licences for DUI. Upside: Great excercise and a cost of two cents per mile as opposed to about fifty cents per mile for driving my car.

I do this, but I live three miles from where I work so this is real easy to do.

Ten miles in the snow would be too much for Abraham Lincoln. It's hard enough during the winter months to get from my parking lot to the building without breaking something. Summer's out too since I'm not a fan of heat stroke. Not practical unless you live very close to work...which does not particularly appeal to me either.

may work for someone who does not have far to travel. also depends on climate. our winters can be brutal trying to ride a bike or walk in the bitter cold might be too much.

I have to travel sometimes 20 or 30 miles for my job sometimes more, and I have to do this several times a day. As fun as riding a bike may be, it is a wee bit impractical.

This depends on how close to work you live because if it is a long way, you could become tired and it can effect your job performance, but, if you need exercise, it's a good idea.

Depends on the city's size in area, and how far you live from your job. Houston is very large in size. You have N, NW, NE, S, SE, and SW Houston. Not to mention all the suburbs. Now if I lived 10 minutes or less from my work (which I have at least once in my life) I would definately consider it.

I think this makes perfectly good sense. It's not only easy on the wallet, gasoline wise, but it's really good exercise.

I'm not in good enough shape, and never will be, to endure that 24 mile roundtrip bike ride on a daily basis.

Would love to. . .can't do it. For all the reasons right and wrong. . . Too far away, too much time. . .and my time at work is too damn important. Never let the office know they can function without me.

I'd really love to ride my bike to work, but unfortunately the paths in the area I live don't connect to those near where I work. There are significant train tracks, a river, and plenty of busy urban roads that would complicate biking on the road. It could be done, but I'm not that hardcore of a biker to travel the distance I would need to under the conditions that are present. Oh yes...it would also be extremely hard to drop my kid off at school with the bike.

Obviously this depends a lot upon where you live. For me right now, this is relatively easy. Urban areas with bike-friendly roadways and generally pleasant weather like San Francisco make it seem easy, but I've had friends get hit by cars and doored by taxis elsewhere in the country. Also, walking on the generally icy and unplowed streets in Philly was bad enough in the winter, let alone introducing a bike into the equation.
