I really don't think Nixon was all that bad like many say. He did screw up our health care and initiated the War on Drugs which was a total failure, but Nixon is one of the greatest foreign policy presidents we ever had. He also withdrew troops from that horrible vietnam war.

Nixon presents a special problem when seeking to evaluate and determine his presidential ranking because his foreign policy and domestic policy successes stand in dramatic contradiction to the corrupt elements in his administration.

His reputation/popularity has improved somewhat among historians, and Americans.  However, he will always be remembered for his dishonesty.  Aside from Watergate, and Vietnam his domestic policies weren't so bad,  but they go unnoticed lol.

People forget Nixon was actually an effective President until Watergate destroyed him. Moral issues bother me a lot but I think you have to look at the big picture. In the big picture guys like Nixon and yes even Bill Clinton made have had poor character but were great at their jobs.

Please. He expanded the Vietnam War into Cambodia. The disgrace of Watergate introduced us to many new concepts: "Dirty Tricks," the eighteen-minute gap, "plumbers", "unindicted co-conspirator." and "a cancer on the White House." His heads of both the C.I.A. and the F.B.I.. were part of the wrongdoing. He fired two men who took honorable stands, Elliot Richarson and William Ruckelshaus, when they refused to fire Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox. He did have some foreign policy accomplishments, but those do not outweigh his abuse of his office.

Like DLF said. "Paranoid anti-semite w/delusions of grandeur, plotted to murder his rivals. Solution to Vietnam: Drag it out 6.5 years. Solution to hyperinflation: Presidential mandate prices be frozen. Chinese schtick brought us lead toys & Wal-Mart. Took us off the Gold std." ...and yet I haven't been able to stop feeling nostalgic for the old reprobate for nearly eight years now.

I am not judging Nixon on the basis of Watergate; which was simply a series of stupid mistakes, I am judging him on his accomplishments as president. Truth of the matter is that Johnson and Kennedy did way worse than Nixon. Watergate was simply a third-rate burglary perpetrated by a bunch of right wing wackos seeking to advance their own political fame within the Republican party. Nixon took advice from the wrong people and it lead to the ensuing coverup. What Nixon REALLY did was stand up for the wrong people. Nixon baically ignored the Republican party in the 1972 election, costing him possible support that would have been critical to him from 1973-74. He ran AWAY from his party, locking up 61 percent of the vote, but his victory did not have coattails. The Republicans actually lost seats in the House and the Senate. The party was actually bitter at Nixon for the shabby treatment; therefore, he did not get the support he needed to defend himself against the aligations that were throw... Read more

Possibly the most underrated president in American history because nobody can look past the Watergate scandal, which will forever be part of Nixon's legacy.  He brought about detente because of his historic visits to Russia and China.  He eventually ended the draft and the Vietnam War (and to be fair I have to say that he dragged on the war).  In Domestic achievements he created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Occuptational Safety and Health Administration, and so on.  He ushered in the War on Drugs with the Controlled Substances Act and Drug Enforcement Administration.  He appointed Warren Burger as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, which is good or bad depending on how you look at it.  Also, he brought about the first affirmative action program, the Philadelphia Plan, which is also good or bad depending on your views.  He did some un-Republican things like wage and price controls and called for a fairly extreme welfare system.  ... He did a lot of good things. His ratings will go up as the current crop of lefto historians die off. I voted for him every time I could. I was too young in 1960. I was eighteen but you had to be 21 in those days. I would have easily voted for him over Kennedy. Hell, I would vote for him today as opposed to the hopeless mob, in all parties, that we have running now, with maybe the exception of Chuck Hagel, Fred Thompson, or Jim Webb, the new Democratic Senator from Virginia.

I have some residual affection for Nixon, but it is also mixed up with nostalgia for a time I never experienced. His political philosophy was slightly to the left of Clinton. He was one of the very few politicians in U.S. history, in the authentic sense: he was aware that politics is always secular and dirty; despite a Quaker background, he felt no "higher calling." He was remorselessly self-interested: he had the consistent and predictable evil of so many public figures, but never really fooled anyone. I sometimes find his persistent rejection of idealism to be a welcome antidote to the hippie worldview, although I ultimately side with the hippies myself. As far as I know, the only lasting and horrible black mark on Nixon's career is his military offensive in Cambodia and Laos -- an unspeakable brutality that may have been inspired by Kissinger, but that he still approved and executed. Forget about Watergate, though -- corruption, after all, isn't everything, and the details of that p... Read more

All politicians are corrupt to an extent, but Nixon was just given a (unfairly) bad reputation because of the Watergate scandal. He was also given most of the blame for the Vietnam War, but he did a better job of it than most presidents would have done. He had to deal with the Vietnam mess, a war which he didn't cause. A real shame that a good president is remembered as a villain.

Three stars is a good rating for Nixon.  So good, and yet so bad.  So corrupt, and yet so brilliant.  An environmental legacy; a legacy of scandal; one of the finest statesmen of the last half of the century; one of the vilest crooks ever to hold office.  Have to admit I appreciate that we had him though.

Despite the several goood things Nixon did- the Environmental Protection Agency, and some strong leadership in foreign affairs- his presidency must be considered a dismal failure. His contempt for the U.S. Constitution and the law, as well as his secret war on Cambodia and unnecessary prolonging of the VietNam mistake resulted in the deaths of millions of innocent people. I think he is one of four presidents who should have been tried for crimes against humanity, the other three being William McKinley, Lyndon B. Johnson and George W. Bush.

Who stands to gain if America is weakened by No Oil, No Refineries, No Army, No will to preserve Liberty or even to know the meaning of the WORD! Thank You Public Schools! Rating Nixon as low as Bush 2 seems unfair- since the 'crimes' against our liberties and against others is much worse then Nixons. Nixon did start the EPA (while Reagan and Bush 2 would like to destroy it and let the polluters destroy our envirionment totally). Nixon also despite his low self esteem and paranoia was much smarter then Bush 2 and Reagan. Nixon actually signed much in the way of progressive leglislation during his time in office. Too bad his paranoid personality, lying, and abstructing justice in the Watergate affair sunk him.

He didn't start the Cold War, but by going to China and Russia you could say he was at least partially to credit for ending it. He didn't start the Vietnam War, but by sending Henry Kissinger to Paris and withdrawing U.S. troops you could argue he ended it. He didn't start Watergate by sending Howard Hunt and the Cubans to break in to the DNC headquarters, but by authorizing hush money and obstructing the investigation, he certainly had a hand in ending it.

Though his dealings with China and the Soviets were two of the biggest foreign policy triumphs in history, his domestic policies--more government programs and more funding for existing programs--were a disaster. And, of course, there was Watergate. Yes, the media conspired with certain government employees to take Nixon down but Nixon deserved to be taken down--just not the way it happened. Congress and the American people should have been soley responsible for removing Nixon, not an unholy alliance of reporters and disgruntled FBI agents.

One of the most contradictory and tragic figures of U.S. history. Still, there was a lot accomplished by Nixon's time in the White House. One of the great foreign policy presidents in our history. He is credited for the opening with China which provided leverage against the U.S.S.R., averting nuclear war in the Mid-East in 1973, and ending a war which should have been ended in his predessor's term. These are just a few of Nixon's accomplishments.

Ineffectual cretin. Shirked personal accountablity and lasting substance. He pulled the troops out? Only after 4 more years of needless war. He was unresponsive to the plight of troops and cosied up to his elitist, conservative buddies. Watergate aside, the major initial blight was his questionable campaign funding. Oh, and it's no big deal he aided in the murder of thousands of Cambodian peasants. No big deal. Major screw-ups are no big deal... Can anyone say in retrospect this man inspired them?

A great American, Ben Stein, said it all this week in his prose Deep Throat and Genocide in American Spectator Online: Can anyone even remember now what Nixon did that was so terrible? He ended the war in Vietnam, brought home the POW's, ended the war in the Mideast, opened relations with China, started the first nuclear weapons reduction treaty, saved Eretz Israel's life, started the Environmental Protection Administration. Does anyone remember what he did that was bad? Oh, now I remember. He lied. He was a politician who lied. How remarkable. He lied to protect his subordinates who were covering up a ridiculous burglary that no one to this date has any clue about its purpose. He lied so he could stay in office and keep his agenda of peace going. That was his crime. He was a peacemaker and he wanted to make a world where there was a generation of peace. And he succeeded. That is his legacy. He was a peacemaker. He was a lying, conniving, covering up peacemaker. He was not a lying, ... Read more

Nixon, a madman? Whew. He was a flawed man, much like Bill Clinton is a flawed man, who did some things very well, but could not escape his destiny, which was to be reviled by his enemies for the very things that had made him successful in the first place. Way back in '92, after recovering from the initial shock that this candidate (Clinton, whom Ross Perot had assured the American people was not qualified to manage the local Wal-Mart store) had been elected by the American people, I told my wife that by the time he left office, he would make Nixon look like a Boy Scout. I think that prediction was closer to true than I had hoped it might be. Nixon (may he rest in peace) tweaked the press a few times and earned himself a hatred that bordered on the fanatical. His liberal policies plunged this country into the worst ten year malaise since the Great Depression, and lasted until Ronald Reagan's policies began to take effect. Comparing Nixon's policies to Mao's is just pure biased i... Read more
