Sun Feb 07 2010Great Italian racehorse who was never beaten. Of all the great racehorses Ribot was one of the very best and he was as tough as they come.

Sun Jan 31 2010RIBOT WAS AN INCREDIBLE RACEHORSE WHO WENT THROUGH HIS RACING CAREER UNBEATEN IN 16 RACES, WINNING TWO PRIX DE L'ARC DE TRIOMPHES ( WHICH IS EFFECTIVELY THE CHAMPIONSHIP OF EUROPE). I RATE RIBOT THE SECOND BEST HORSE I HAVE EVER SEEN , ONLY SEA BIRD II WAS SUPERIOR TO THIS ITALIAN CHAMPION.

Wed Aug 05 2009Without doubt Ribot was a great horse, his unbeaten record testifies to this, but I don't believe that he would have been able to cope with the likes of Sea Bird II or the American superstar Secretariat. However he would have been a difficult horse to pass with his relentless galloping style.

Sun Aug 03 2008Unbeaten in 16 races this Italian colt was obviously the real deal and a real tough nut to boot. He chalked up two facile victories in the Prix de l'arc de Triomphe, admittedly against average opposition ,but he could do no more than beat them out of sight. Ribot probably didn't possess the scintillating brilliance of Sea Bird II, but he was a great champion nonetheless.

Sat Dec 03 2005Harsh Thakor states that Ribot (excellent though he undoubtedly was) holds the world record of 16 unbeaten runs. This is not the case. That distinction goes to a Hungarian bred mare Kingscem, who retired undefeated, winning all of the 54 races she contested during her illustrious career. As a two-year old to five year old, and over four seasons(1876-79) she raced against the best Europe had to offer, and should be rightfully regarded among the greats. * Technically, Puerto Rican horse, Camarero, held the world record (for consecutive wins; 56 in all (though I have since learned that an Asian trained horse has since surpassed that record) - but as Camarero's victories were against poorer class local rivals, its merits can only be viewed at face value.

Wed Sep 14 2005I never saw him race (he belonged to a previous generation) but just reading about his exploits makes the hair stand on end. There are holes to pick in his unbeaten track record- particularly the fact that 13 of those races were in his native Italy and with due respect, would have been merely benefit races for him. However, people underestimate just how difficult it is to maintain a 100% record even against weaker opposition- after all, horses are not machines, anything can go wrong and greats such as Sea Bird and Dancing Brave were beaten by inferior rivals due to bad luck. So to complete such a lengthy career unbeaten is a magnificent achievement, whatever the circumstances and locale. However, it is the manner and margin of his 3 overseas victories that highlight his claim to being the greatest horse of the 20th century. In an age when cross-border travel was still a major rigmarole, his runaway victories in the Arc (twice) and King George are the stuff of legend. The Derby is... Read more
