Mon Nov 30 2009I have a fairly high perscription and had a whole bunch of trouble with my glasses from Reynolds. Had to take them back three times and got to be so much trouble I asked for a refund. I had to take the glasses to another Optician and he said there was a problem with prismatic effect. They charged me $40 restocking fee for their low quality product. The young lady who helped me told me they sell "World Vision brand" lenses from Korea, I am told by my new optician that these are poor quality lenses. I did some home work and it turns out the owner was taken to court for destroying 1050 patient medical charts. Why because he was angry with a doctor. This is public record, he was sued for half a million as a result. Watch out for these people. Buy a frame from them if you must but get lens done elsewhere.

Thu Aug 27 2009I bought two pair of glasses (2 for 1) sale with high index lenses. The total was $900. A tremendous amount of money! One pair of glasses turned out fine. The other pair is a disaster. At the time I questioned the salesperson about the fit. The frames are cute but I was concerned about an all plastic frame because there's not a lot of room for adjustment. I said my eyelashes tend to touch if they lenses are too close. I said I had a narrow bridge and so on. She assured me they'd fit. Of course, they don't! Since I don't live in Portland I went to my local store and tried to get them adjusted. They said there's not a lot they can do. I called Reynolds and they said hold on to them until I'm in Portland next. ARE YOU NUTS? I have no plans to return to Portland and I'm not going to just put brand new glasses away for months. They said I could send them back (and pay shipping both ways) and they could adjust them. HOW CAN YOU ADJUST THEM WHEN I'M NOT THERE? They said I could have special n... Read more

Sat Aug 01 2009I understand no one is perfect, yet this place failed SO MANY TIMES . I broke my frame, go into store, purchase replacement frame and have lenses installed. Whoooa...Lenses are now cloudy as if smudged by fingers. Employee says he must have over heated lenses while inserting. Business informs me that I need to pay half of replacement cost.....?!?!?! Did your employee not damage my lenses? Your employee readily admitted to overheating the lenses and thereby damaging them. It took me several weeks, lots of heated phone calls, including talking with the owner, and multiple visits to three different locations. Even had one employee knock the glasses off of the table and onto the floor. Their lack of concern was unreal!! I tried to inform them that this is not say a misfitted pair of jeans and or a bad haircut that will grow out.....This Is my VISION !!!!!! MEDICAL !!! CRUCIAL TO GETTING BY !!! I will not go back or recommend Reynolds....And that's too bad because the styles the... Read more

Wed Jul 29 2009I think it is important to give credit where credit is due. For well over 10 years I have been a satisfied Reynolds customer. My fist experience with Reynolds was coming in off the street with my young son who had just broken his glasses while downtown (glasses purchased in Minnesota not at Reynolds). Not only did Reynolds repair them (and order new parts) but they refused to accept payment. I recently needed new Kawasaki lenses. After careful comparative shopping Reynolds saved money (and also helped with insurance filing). About 3 years ago, during my regular eye exam at Reynolds, their optometrist expressed concern about a subtle optical irregularity and asked me to schedule a follow up appointment with an ophthalmologist (just to be safe). Thanks to her the ophthalmologist did discover a more serious problem which is regularly monitored. My most recent experience at Reynolds (and why I chose to write this review) has to do with a non-profit organization (where I am a Trustee). O... Read more

Wed May 06 2009Promised new glasses in two weeks. I called them after three weeks and they said they'd had a problem but would "rush" them, which to them meant two more weeks. After six weeks I hadn't heard from them and sent a fax to cancel the order. They refuse to reverse the credit charge and give my money back and now claim that (as if being over a month late, making no effort to communicate, and taking two months to make glasses (which are generally available in an hour for standard orders or a week for special orders) was acceptable) they never promised them in two weeks anyway.

Mon May 04 2009Let's be honest, this place is owned by very nice and outstanding humans that regularly not only give to organizations in need but provide a product and service that is outstanding. The problem is not the shop but the unreasonable expectations by the type of demented A-holes that leave negative responses. Please remember that the people that work here are humans and deserve basic human respect, they are somebody's Mom, sister, wife, brother, dad, husband, son, daughter; these are normal down to earth people that simply make a living by providing a service. Unfortunately they have to deal with the kind of low life A-holes that leave negative responses. The negative reviews here are way over the top and nothing more then SPAM. I am not sure why this system on this website lets them remain. It is proof positive that any low rating here is not legitimate or even note worthy. If you want good and respectable service start by being good and respectable to the people making a living by wo... Read more

Mon Mar 30 2009I used to work there and know how hard it is when handling with unreasonable customers. Before complaining about a broken frame, ask yourself; did you buy it for $20 off their sale table? (there's a reason it's on sale. you get what you pay for) Before bitching about coatings coming off 2 years later ask yourself; would I find it unusual for a pair of jeans I wear several times a week to start to show signs of wear over time? Before you purchase something maybe you should find out what you're getting. Questions are encouraged, not prohibited. If you know you have a strong prescription, you should know that there's several options for lenses so ask what your options are. As for unexperienced staff, about half probably had previous experience. It's understandable if they don't know EVERYTHING. Don't youremember a job that you had that trained you on the job? How nerve racking it was? I do. I have sympathy for anyone who works in customer service. It's not always pretty. I don't doub... Read more

Sun Feb 15 2009The workers at this shop talked me into buying frames that were completely inappropriate for my prescription, and now that I've learned this from other sources and am completely unable to wear these glasses they refuse to rectify the situation. I have been too busy to get back there, so now they say it's too late for me to pay the fee to get new lenses. They should rectify the situation for FREE, as it was their unprofessional advice that led me astray in the first place. THEY are the ones who are supposed to be experts in lenses and frames. They are the ones who told me to purchase these frames. I am not a vindictive person, but please STAY AWAY from this business. Go somewhere that knows what they are talking about and has the professionalism and service to fix their mistakes when they make them. I will never go there again, and will tell everyone I know to stay away as well.

Tue Dec 16 2008I too ordered two pair of glasses on their 2 for 1 sale, and it was, astonishingly, over $600. They called me when only one pair arrived, meaning an extra trip downtown. Then, the sunglasses came in and they looked terrible, which I was informed was because of the choice of frame combined with polarized lenses . . . and so I asked if that wasn't one reason why you buy glasses from a professional, so they can let you know thses kinds of things . . . no real response. They redid them with less expensive lenses, I did not even bother asking for a refund. After about 5 trips downtown (my time is worth something), I left pretty unimpressed. I eventually got a good set of glasses, but it was an arduous process, expensive, and I had to do much of the heavy lifting, left to their own devices they would have done nothing.

Sun Jun 29 2008On May 5th, 2007, I ordered two pairs of glasses from this place, costing me about $800 total (this was a "sale", where one pair was "free"). One pair was defective, so I asked them to redo them (I returned them within two days). They never called to offer me any options or info about what they were doing (I had asked about various lens choices to hopefully correct the original problem), and they ended up doing absolutely nothing for about three weeks. Sarah (a manager) was our contact person for the whole ordeal. Tons of calls made by me, NO proactive service on their part the whole time. Finally, they redid the glasses with lenses that were $100 cheaper than the ones originally ordered, and when I asked for the difference to be refunded I was refused, and told they had "bent over backwards" for us. Hmmm, yeah I guess three to four weeks of NO communication and no sunglasses to wear is bend-over-backwards service?!?! Thanks Reynolds!!! After several more phone calls to the manager, sh... Fri Jun 13 2008They have a lot of glasses, but everything seems a bit tired and lacklustre, not the best selection of glasses for a shop that seems to present itself as a hipper kind of place than the average. There are so many quality eyeglasses designers out there.....why not carry them? Service is friendly, though a little desperate.

Tue Apr 22 2008My friend referred me to Reynolds Optical on NW 23rd, and I love her for it. I have never had a more pleasurable experience, the Opticians rock! The frame selection is the best I have ever seen. The lenses were filled exactly as the doctor prescribed, in fact I took the eyeglasses to my doctor for inspection and he gave them two overwhelming thumbs up. Thank you Reynolds Optical Opticians you guys rock!

Sun Apr 06 2008My profession requires that I live most of the year in Paris and New York and I travel the world extensively, Reynolds Optical in Portland on NW 23rd is the only place I shop for eyeglasses. I have been coming here for years and will never stop, there is a reason Reynolds is the oldest and most established Optical Shop in PDX. Those who are in the know, know that it is worth the wait to get your eyewear at Reynolds in Portland. Service is outstanding, the prescription lenses always work great and the staff are just good people. Reynolds Optical is Optical Nirvana.

Tue Apr 01 2008Awesome service!, Awesome Eyewear!, 100% Highly recommend to all!... I have always lived a humdrum normal life, until I went to Reynolds Optical. The service was like a sweet seduction and absolutely knocked my socks off. You see I am what I consider a homely geeky kind of girl, nothing interesting has ever happened to me ever!...Until I went to Reynolds Optical! Talk about a totally hip and happening staff, these Opticians Rocked my nerd world, not just with their wonderful friendly bedside manner but with their hip and happening outlook on life. Reynolds Optical, here be kindred spirits! When I went in, I thought it would be another boring eyeglass purchase like thousands before...but I was inspired to let loose and be a bit uninhibited with my eyewear selection. The wonderful staff inspired me to set myself free and live on the edge. They said it would change my life and it did! The first time I wore my new eyeglasses out, I met this incredibly hot guy! Guess what? He made my toe... Read more

Thu Mar 20 2008Legendary Customer Service! First the staff really know the technical aspects of eyewear(Frames & lenses), the most knowledgeable staff I have found. Even better, they have a sense of fashion and flare with some of the coolest frames outside of New York and LA. I highly suspect that any negative remarks were either placed by people with unreasonable expectations or perhaps placed by rival optical companies. I purchased two pairs, and they are fabulous! Never have I received such great fashion advice, all my friends love my new look and I have heard more then once how Se xy my new eyeglasses make me look. I plan to go back and look for a few more pairs. Let me tell you about the details of my awesome experience: 1. The guy there acknowledged me and helped me right away. 2. He was fun; a joy to know, right away I felt like we were two friends and not just a customer and salesperson. 3. The advice given was right on! He honestly told me if something looked bad an I appreciate this more... Read more

Fri Mar 14 2008I have to disagree with the negative review posted. I have had several pairs of glasses made at Reynolds over the years and I continue to get compliments on the frames I have gotten from them. Any issues I have had with the lenses were dealt with as soon as I brought them to the attention of the staff. When I had a problem adjusting to a new sunglass Rx, they worked with me over and over again until I could wear them without any issues. That included adjusting the frames to properly fit my face and re-doing the lenses at no cost to me. They continue to have a great selection of frames that you don't see everywhere else and excellent quality in lenses. They definitely know great customer service and are skilled at telling you what does and does not look good on you. This is extremely helpful if you are popping in to look for frames by yourself and can't bring a friend with you. They won't let you walk out with a frame that looks bad on your face! Like anything else, make sure... Read more

Thu Mar 13 2008About a week ago i broke my favorite pair of glasses... I had them for 6 years! So I went into Reynolds because i had originally purchased my glasses from them. Sadly they didn't have that style any longer. But we did find a solution, they had a different color of the frame that i was in search of and even gave me a price break because of my misfortunate breakage. Also they called the designer to see if the frame i wanted was still even available, it wasn't, but they did find me two other colors and special ordered them for me (store policy is no special orders). The staff was very helpful and went above and beyond my expectations and reminded me as to why Reynolds was my first and only stop.

Thu Mar 13 2008I came to Reynolds in search of a cute new set of eyeglasses to put my new prescription in and left with an AWESOME set of frames! They had the neatest frames to pick from; bright colors, unique shapes, well made brands. I found several that I wanted. I left the store with a quote of 2 weeks til they were ready. 2 days later my current pair broke! I had no spares! I called them right away to see if there was any way it could be rushed and they called me back to say that they were going to try a different lab but there were no guarantees. The next day I got a call to say they were ready! I was thrilled. They totally saved me by getting them so quickly, and I didn't even have to pay extra! I would definately recommend Reynolds to my friends-I already have!

Tue Jan 08 2008I have been wearin glasses for a long time. I have never had such a bad experience. They may have nice frames, but that's where it ends. They are clueles about optical lenses; they tell you they only sell the best & then fill your Rx with cheap lenses. When called on it, they will "upgrade" for an additional fee after an argument. Customer service is not a phrase they comprehend. Buy the frames if you must, but go elsewhere for the lenses. Personally, I wouldn't even step fot in their stores again. They stink!!! (Read the reviews under all the other stores if you're not yet convinced.)

Sat Nov 03 2007The store carries great glasses but the service is horrible. I ordered glasses that were supposed to be ready in 2 weeks. After 6 months I still did not have my glasses and no one in the store ever called me to inform me about any delays. I called the store about once a month to get info on them. I finally asked for my money back since I still had not gotten my glasses. They refused and I had to go to small claims court in order to finally get back my money.

Tue Oct 30 2007Be careful when doing business with Reynolds Optical. I had a most unpleasant experience with the company, the salespeople, and owner himself. I paid $625 in full (my mistake) to get a pair of glasses and found out the next day that the lenses I was getting would not be the thinnest lenses, as I was promised. It began with a play on words about what "thinnest" lenses meant (they claim it was the thinnest lens for the sale price promised). Then they offered a thinner lenses for an extra $160. I called numerous times to try to resolve my dilemma, my calls were ignored. At that point, I wanted a full refund since the frames had not even left the store to be worked on. I sent a formal letter to the owner asking for help. I found out later, that he had been apprised of the situation from day 1!! I filed a formal complaint. I had to finally agree to a restocking fee of 20% before they refunded me any money. The time consuming efforts and distress I went through to finally come to ... Read more

Tue Jul 24 2007I had a new prescription put into a pair of my glasses. When I got the glasses back, the frames were too large for my head (they slid off) so I asked the salesperson to tighten the frames. When I got them back, there was a fine fracture through part of the plastic frame. When I asked about the damage, the salesgirl assured me that since the fracture was so slight and not on a point of stress, I should not worry and that the frames would not break. When the frame DID break, I brought the glasses in and asked what they could do. I was told that the girl who had helped me before no longer worked there and there was nothing that they could do. I was stuck with a pair of $400 broken glasses. Lame. I would never recommend Reynold to anyone.

Sun May 27 2007I went in to see if this location of Reynolds Optical carried a specific name brand of glasses. After waiting around for about 15 minutes as the one person working there listened to a customer complain about some other shopping experience; -- there was no sales transaction taking place, the customer was not trying on glasses, being fitted or resolving any problems -- just complaining about a different store (other than Reynolds). It amazes me that this was more important than helping a customer who might actually buy something. Not once did the sales person offer to help me -- not until I was walking out the door, she said "do you have a question?". I didn't bother answering, I'd already wasted 15 minutes of my life I'll never get back. The question I should have asked is "how do you stay in business with such terrible customer service?"

Tue Jan 16 2007it is dirty. the glasses are nice, but the service is lousy. my glasses are still on order and it has been weeks. i tried to get a hold of a manager and was told that i was not privy to her name and could not talk to her myself. in my case the sales staff (mack) repeatedly did not call me back to let me know what was going on with my glasses and how long it would be. i am still waiting. don't let yourself get sucked in the way i did. there are more/better/nicer/fabulous places to spend your money at on hawthorne.
