Remington 11-87

i purchased a 11-87 20 ga 2 3/4 3 in yoouth model for my wife for the sole purpose of rabbit huntung..it was the over the counter awnser...short stock for my wifes arm length....short barrel 21 in for the brush.....cammoed up (no scracthes to worry with)...all good untill we hit the field.......jam jam jam.......all i needed was some biscuts due to the breaks i took clearing the weapon....this little gun hated low brass shells......little wiffeeeee wasn't to happy at the time....seemed like no second shots for her.......so a trip to the gunsmith followed......it was determined that this gun was designed for heavy loads not for the purpose of hunting wabbits with low brass shells .......the gunsmith modified it and it has been a cotton tail busting machine since.....been hungry since that day no need for biscuts.......my advice is to purchase a weapon for the use it is designed for.......its hard to find a all purpose 20 ga auto loader without paying a gold miners price......makes it... bought my 11-87 in the late nineties and has been a great gun.maybe the newer ones have quality issues.most auto loaders have trouble from time to time.i also have a 1100 cantilever slug gun works great never a jam or missfire and is a killing machine.

I have a 3" Premier 1187 and a 3 1/2 Super Mag 1187 and love both of them. The Premier is over 15 years old and the Super mag is 10 years old. I have not had cycling problems with any shells with any of these guns. I clean once or twice a Duck/Pheasant season and thats it. I shoot 50 pheasants and around 50 ducks a year and ofcourse I miss a bit too. These guns work and if they don't there is a Remington dealer always close by. Can't say the same for the Italy guns. Keep your money in America folks. Our kids will appreciate it someday when we are gone.

I'm sorry but they wouldn't make bird barrels if it was made for deer lol... I have a 11-87 and plenty of other remingtons...I have one word benelli ;-) that's all I have to say I have 4 and never in years have I had one problem with any of them sbe2 m2 Vinci nova

I don't know what some of you are doing to your 11-87. I've had mine since mid/late 1990's and I've never had an issue, jam or mis-fire. It is a very dependable shotgun. I do keep it clean after every use and it treats me well. ken

4 stars, 5 if it was lighter.. I would have to say my 1187 has been near perfect aside from the weight of the gun as I get older. Ive seen the new synthetic stock thumb hole grip, love it. My question.... Can I replace the excising stock with the new one synthetic... Aside from that, it's a great deer gun.

This gun is horribly designed, heavy, and unrealiable. I bought a brand new super mag waterfowl because my brother had the 3 inch and had no problems. Since then, my 11-87 rarely ever cycled 3 shells without a jam, even after constant maintenance. Gunsmiths have looked at it, reassymbled it, and even talked me into a special synthetic o-ring for $12! Nothing worked. So I got really sick of misfires and missing ducks and pheasants so I bought a Benelli m2 after lots of research. I have shot 200 rounds of 1 oz and 1/14 oz , a variety of 2 3/4 or 3" with not a hickup! In the meantime my brothers sythetic black has worn off and started to rust, and sure enough started to jam! Guess what, he went the cheaper rout and bought a Stoeger and has had no problems. Remington autoloaders are crap! Spend the money and buy the italians or the winchester super x! Jeff in N. I have bought a new 1187 back in early 2001 In Every duck hunting trip it failed, It cannot handle the fast steels of today's duck loads. I either had the ejecter pop out or the receiver and barrel slam together so hard it takes two people with all their might to take it apart. as far as trap shooting I can shoot all day no problem. But with thee 1187 you better like stripping and cleaning your gun alot, their very touchy. The biggest problem is I never had any help when I had sent this gun it for warrentty. they say everything is good and to bad for you.

I've owned a Remington 11-87 light contours shotgun for approx 6 six years now. I have honestly not had a single ounce of trouble with it. It absolutely shoots as fast as I can pull the trigger and never a single jam. I have a glossy wood stock and it is just as beautiful now as the day i bought it. The only issue that I am dealing with now is that the 30" barrel is a bit too long for brush hunting so I am in the process of buying a 26" barrel from Cabela's. I will use the 30" barrel strictly for duck and geese hunting. I dont know about all the other negative reviews which I have read about this type of shotgun but I am extremely happy with mine and would recommend this shotgun to anybody out there. I got my 11-87 Sportsman for my Grad Gift in 2006. I love the gun it's my baby. i have shot over 50,000+ rounds through it and have never had a jam. Thats rite you heeard rite 50,000+ rounds. I shot trap with it and won both state and the grand with it and many other shoots. it has killed over a couple dozen ducks and geese, quite a few squirrels, and my first deer. The one thing i do know is you def should clean it after every time you go shooting or hunting. I Love This Gun! Hell i'm using it this weekend for opening day of waerfowl!

can't depend on my 11-87 because you never know if it is going to cycle the shells i think i wasted my money . my buddies mosberg 935 is a more dependable by far

I just bought an 1187 and i took it out Dove hunting yesterday....kinda disappointed! it jammed once and the magazine tube jammed the Carrier lift and i had to COMPLETELY disassemble the gun in the field with a Pen!! but other than that i love the gun! i love the way it feels and how it shoots! i cant miss with it! i only wish it was not such a headache to fix when it jams! over all its a good gun

I just had a question for anyone willing to answer, I have a 2 yr old 11-87 and for some reason the safety wont engage. I have oiled it quite a few times now and still am not getting any movement, I havent dropped the gun or hit it with anything. I tried remingtons website but it just said to send it in, I was hoping to safe some money and try and fix it myself. Any one have any ideas?? thanks

Finally got my 11-87 3 1/2 to work. The ejection spring that runs from the back of the receiver and goes through the stock was a full 2" shorter than it was supposed to be. I purchased the new spring and installed it and have not had any problems since. I think the spring should have been used on the 3" guns and was mistakenly used in the assembly of the 3 1/2". Had to figure this out on my own though, after talking with Remington and taking it to a licensed Remington dealer twice. Maybe I should be a gun smith. Hope this helps some of you with the jam problems.

I have no idea how you people maintain your weapons, all I do is remove the barrel, spray Break-Free CLP around the gas port ring and wipe when finished for the day. Have had no problems with low base or mixing brands or weights. Great job Remington..

In Feb 2008, I purchased a used left-handed 11-87 Premier made in 2006. I hunt several days a week during waterfowl and upland game season, and shoot clays periodically during the summer. After purchasing the gun, I took it to a guns smith who taught me how to break it down and clean it. My first negative encounter occurred two weeks after purchase while on a snow goose hunting trip. On the second wave of geese, the gun failed to cycle a shell out of the magazine tube. The third wave of geese came in while I was desperately trying to get it to cycle a shell. To fix the problem I had to pull the magazine spring out and dump the shells out of the top of the tube, frustrating to say the least. I figured out the hard way that the magazine tube will not hold four 3 inch shells as I expected. Not the guns fault, I don’t think. I hunted the rest of the trip with 3 shells in the magazine. I have had several 1187's. And i'll tell ya,everyone jam's from time to time. The best thing is clean it after EVERY time you shoot it!!!! Especially if you shoot cheap shells. Some of the cheap Federal's,which kick ass outta my guns are dirty shells and any buildup in the gas ports in the barrel and the gun will start jamming. So scrub those out EVERY time you shoot!!!! And ive noticed that if you put oil on the magazine tube my guns jamm more often. Just scrub off the mag tube. And just oil in between the 2 gas pistons and your golden. Remington makes a hell of a shotgun. And in my opinion. There is NO other choice.......Keep'em clean boy's

i have a 11-87 super mag synthetic that my grandfather bought for my grandma she shot it didn't like the kick because it was a short barrel and fired as hard as my twelve guage so i bought a 28in barrel on gunbroker and it is the best gun i have owned i will totally buy one again when i shoot skeet all my rounds go threw it fine never jammed ONCE!so for all the people who say its a bad gun u should have bought the supermag synthetic

I purchased a 11-87 Premier in 2006 and went on a guided goose hunt in upstate New York. After my 5th shot with a 3 1/2 load my fore stock split in half. The gun was sent back to Remington and I was sent back a new gun. This year, I went on the same trip and once again, after three shots fired, the fore stock split again. I love the look of the wood stocks, but it appears obvious I'll have to go to synthetic stocks moving forward. Remington claims they've never had this problem before. The gun is on route to Remington. Has anyone had this problem before?

I recently purchased an 11-87 sportsman, and am very pleased with it. The only problem I have had after about 500 rounds through it, is that the second box of ammo (Federal) failed to cycle about half of the time. Since then, it has broken in nicely, and never fails to cycle nor misfires even with the Federal ammo. I saw some light rust on my patches the first few times I cleaned the gun, but it has been completely rust free since then. I keep it very clean, and liberally lubricate the outside of the magazine tube and the gas piston with Breakfree CLP. It makes the gun much easier to clean. Bottom line is that I love my 11-87 and am very happy with my purchase.

I bought an 1187 super magnum 3 months ago, just before dove season. When shooting 2.75" dove loads, the gun jambs about every 10th round, even with the barrel seal activator installed and using shells with 3.25 drams powder and 1.12 oz shot, as recomended. I also bought the slug barrel, and I was sighting it in this weekend. After the 4th round, the guns's action jambed so badly, I had to take it to a Remington authorized gun smith. He cleared it, test fired one slug, and it jamed again. He has no idea how to fix it and is sending it back to Remington. I only wish it could stay there. Remington markets this gun as being able to shoot anything from 2.75" to 3.5" shells and slugs. So far my 1187 won't shoot 2.75" shells or slugs. I am very disapointed with this purchase. Going deer unting in a couple of weeks and plannedd to use the 1187 as my slug gun. Doubt the gun will be back in time for my trip. Going shopping for a Winchester X3.

Judging by your post it looks like you forgot your medication today. People like you should not even own a gun due to your unstable attatuides. Do yourself a favor and take up bird hunting. ;)

i have an 11-87 and it is the best slug gun i have ever owned...so fuck all of you that are ragging on remington. Remington make good shooting guns...and fuck all u bird hunters the 11-87 is for slug hunting not duck hunting pussy's

I just recently bought a Premier 12 gauge. And I love it. I have shot probally 500 rounds and have not had 1 jam.

I bought my wife an 11-87 upland special 20 ga. It jammed the first time she shot it. We had to send it back to Remington 4 times. They finally got it in working order and haven't had any major problems in a while (she doesn't shoot much). We went and shot sporting clays and and it started jamming again. The last jam somehow cycled on the brass of the shell and now the ejector is sticking outside the slide. Guess its time to send it back to Remington. By far the worst gun I have ever been associated with. Will never buy another Remington!

i own a 11-87 sportsman and its mint never jams shoot trap phesants ducks and anythng else that flys and it plows them down left right and center with no probs at all rugged as only prob is its waaay 2 heavy

ive got an 11-87 supermag special purpose camo. i am 12 and 5-10 i am primarily a duck hunter and i creep in a canoe not from a blind, and it is very easy to pick up if i see a duck.  i brought it turkey huntung and the extra lenth helped aiming. i love my gun, she hasent jammed up on my once wich is great for a semiauto. all im trying to say is its a great gun and i love it.

Owned a 11-87 12 guage for 4 years now and a 20 guage for 3 years. When I first got each gun the first box of shell fired through them I had problems with ejecting shells. I took each apart and realy cleaned all the factory grease and oil of them and re lubricated them with very light oil and they have been great since. I shoot 2500 rounds through each in a year, Iuse them on everything from starlings , pigeon and doves to ducks and geese , The 20 is the sweetist shooting gun I have ever owned.

I have a new 11-87 super mag waterfoul special,and I WISH I had spent my money for something different. 3 1/2 shells hang up in the magazine tube, never get a second shot. Cleaning doesn't help . The camo is falling off the reciver after the first season. JUNK

I took my new 11-87 Super Magnum on a guided duck hunt this week and was very disappointed. The owners manual states that the included Barrel Seal Activator was recommended when firing 2 3/4" shells and not recommended for 3s and 3 1/2s. When I fired, the weapon wouldn't cycle, and the expended shell (3 1/2) hung up. When my guide broke his down, his BSA was in place and it functioned fine. I replaced mine and the gun cycled properly. Poor recommendation. The second problem, once I could get to the third shell, was that it hung up in the magazine tube. I took it to a local shop, and they called their local Remington authorized gunsmith. He knew immediately what the problem was...the interceptor latch...and had seen it before in new 11-87s. The retailer is sending the gun back to Remington this week. I think it is a good gun, but it seems like Remington's QA is slipping a little. Has anyone else experienced these issues?

I've been duck and pheasant hunting with my 1187 for about 12 years, no major problems but the occasional jam until the other day. I was sitting in my duck blind and the first flight of mallards brought on the first shot. Whammo, the piece of junk disintegrated in my hands. Let me preface this by saying this is the first year I've switched over to Kent Fasteel, 1560fps. Earlier this week I received the go-ahead from my CFO to purchase a new toy after a legendary Thanksgiving weekend at our local indian casino. I called my dealer and inquired about price and availability for a Remington 1178 3&1/2" Super Mag, nive to match the other two Rem autos in the gunsafe. He told me right off to stay away from that shotgun! He said he'd had a half dozen come back in for repair since the start of this duck season, they just didn't hold up. He said if I wanted a new shotgun the Winchester SX3 was comparable in price, he'd sold a ton of them, not one had come back thru the doors to be fixed for any ... Read more

I like the header.11-87 Jamo-matic. I just recently let a 12 point in full rut (230 pound plus.) pass buy because of this problem. Brand new gun,Only fired 3 times then cleaned. Click is all I heard. Had to disassemble it to get the shells out. Ive been an avid bow hunter for years and this is my first year with shotgun. I've been seeing deer every day in bow season but always 60yds + away. Opening day,7:30 am and click is all I hear. What the #$%%???? 40 yards away and all I wanted was my bow. Oh,ya for the gas ring. The drawing is incorrect. The gun comes with the steel collar located on the wrong side of the barrel ring. Remove the steel collar then insert your barrel then put the steel collar on ,then the stock. Return it to your gun shop and trade it for a pump action. 11/05/07 11:36 am. Wish me better luck tonight.

Does anyone know how to properly install the gas ring on the rem 11 87 premier for 2 3/4 shells? The illustartion is not clear and i want to be safe than sorry. Thanks.

Owned a "cheap" 11-87 Sportsman for 2 years. Hunted and shot trap twice a week. 500+ rounds per week during trap, hunted in all weather - snow, rain, sleet, etc. NEVER A PROBLEM. I thought I needed a "fancy" O/U for trap, and traded my cheap 11-87 for a really nice, expensive O/U. Two weeks later, after horrible scores at the range, I found my 11-87 at the same gun shop and traded back. Walked out with a check and my 11-87. My trap scores are now way above what they were before I traded the Remington. It's ugly, but it sure has embarassed a lot of Browning, Krieghoff, Kolar, and other expensive guns!

Jam-O-Matic ! I just got it back from Remington again. There has got to be a fix for this problem, and it isn't cleaning. Unless you need to do it every 5-10 rounds. I wouldn't recommend it .

I have just recently purchased 2 11-87's. One is the premier and the other is the youth model. They are both 20 gauge. I keep my guns clean and do not allow build up or gunk. I took the guns out with my little girl for her first dove hunt. I have got to say that this is not a very good quality gun. First of all, from the factory the premier was assembled wrong. It would not eject shells or cycle. Luckily I had my girls to look at. Secondly, these guns jamb more often than not. It is a sad day for Remington. I wish I had not purchased these guns. A friend has the 12 gauge and he is happy with it. Me, no way.

I have a Remmy 11-87 that has given great service for the past 13 years. The secret to this gun, or any other is service. Clean it and keep it lubed properly and it will do what you bought it for. Change the O-ring every year whether it needs it or not. Cost less than $.50. It is a Viton 2-021 O-ring. You can buy a dozen for less than $5.00 from Graingers or any plumbing supply house.I am very happy with it. I have several brands of firearms. I rate this one 5-star and I treat like a member of the family.

I own both 1187 and a SPR453 and I love them both. Ive never had any problems with either. My 1187 is a few years old and I took a trio of turkeys last year (pictures at www.myspace.com/reynoldsp). I just got the SPR453 this fall and after running 60 rounds to break it in, it is one sweet machine. It operates like a Super Black Eagle, yet I got it for only $250 bucks. I used it this past Goose and Duck season and had great success with it.What I am looking for now is a sling ring for it but I am having no luck. Anybody have a website that I could order it from?

I have used an 11-87 Rem for the past two seasons for hunting quail and dove. I hunt regularly and have put between 1,500-2,000 rounds through my gun. Last week the carrier on my gun broke and the gun failed to cycle. Good thing it was still under warranty. I called Remington and they sent me a whole new trigger assembly in four days. I am glad Remington stands behind their product.

I own a Remington 1187 Premier LC. Those people who have experienced problems with this model should know this. Like all firearms maintenance is a must. Cleaning and Oiling is very important. Key point there is a gas sleeve and O ring kit which is the heart of the ejection operation. Repace it with a new one at the first sign of a jamming shell. This nothing more than maintenance on well designed shotgun.

For a gun in this price range it is middle of the pack. It is heavier than several of its rivals and jams more often than some but not as bad as others. You will have the security of having the Remington company stand behind their product.

This gun will jam easily and often. It advertises shooting 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 shells, but will not shoot the lesser shells without jamming 2 out of 3 times you shoot the gun.

For the price it is not too bad. Do not find it very reliable. I fired about 100 round and had a few jams.

I bought my 11-87 12ga in 2004 brand new form Sportsmans Warehouse It has never fired more than 3 rounds without jambing. I have sent it back to Remington two times & experianced rotten service form ther CSR's. Was lied to about the problem being fixed & what they found. I will never buy Remington agin eventhough I never had a problem with them before.

I have both the 12ga Premier Super-Mag. and the 20ga Premier versions and broke 100 straight in skeet with both guns. 100 straight with the 20ga. was the very first 100 shells put through it. Made a lot of Kolar and Kreighoff owners start to think!

I purchased an 11-87 sporting clays when they first came out several years ago. I belong to two different trap clubs and have put a lot of rounds through this fine gun. I have owned several different shotguns and find the 11-87 buy far the best. I have heard the stories about the o-rings and purchased a couple after I bought the gun. They are both still in my gun case.

I have owned my 11-87 since 1992 and it has not once hung up. I KEEP IT CLEAN! I use it on ducks, and turkey with 3" and dove and skeet with lowbrass. The only drawback is it's not the lightest gun; however I do not want another 12 ga auto. Great gun for the money.

I have used my 11-87, 12 gage for about seven years of heavy dove, quail, duck and some turkey. Also have passed thru the chamber about 8,000 rounds of skeet with a very reliable perform. I have had like other hunters some malfunctions such as not ejecting or chambering a round caused by damaged seal rings or o rings. Other than that, I rate this gun a very reliable one and parts are cheap and easy to locate and replace.

Ive shot my 11-87 for 4 years with heavy use. Hunt dove & quail. Its great and failsafe. Points and handles excellent. Use factory seals only,my 1st lasted 2 years. Keep magazine tube clean with no oil. Use a Hopps barrel brush to remove plastic residue from barrel especially where it chambers. Shells and plastic shot sleeve leave plastic reisdue. Lighlty oil action before use. Use gun scrubber on trigger asselmbly and Eezox also is awesome lubricant and rust protector. My son and I ran 500 rounds through his 20 and 5oo thru my 12 to test this proceedcure with NO FAILURE TO FEEDS. Back to o-rings the ones at Brownells broke the same day...this guy sells real ones for cheap,20 for 13 dollars. Hes at www.TruGripUSA.com Steve
