Sun Feb 07 2010unless you were alive in Marley's prime or your life heavily revolves around not having one and marijuana - reggae is a no-no. gross.

Fri Oct 09 2009Repetitive, throbbing beat no matter what band or song you're listening to. In my opinion, not a genre at all, but a 'drug add-on', used only to enhance your drug experience but not for real listening.

Mon Apr 20 2009My opinion and speaking as an American, I really gotta be in the mood for this. Usually sounds better when your drunk or stoned. Mostly mellow easy style music.

Mon Apr 20 2009There are very, very few poor records from the classic period (ca. 1970 - 1979), and very little of interest since. Many of the best Reggae artists are virtually unknown in the USA. Some suggested listening: Culture, Augustus Pablo, King Tubby, Dennis Brown, Toots & The Maytals, Lee Perry & The Upsetters, The Heptones, Junior Murvin, Big Youth, Max Romeo, Dillinger, Burning Spear, Black Uhuru etc.

Fri Mar 20 2009I like it and respect it as a musical form of expression, although I wouldn't say I'm overly knowledgeable about it. I'm friends with a Jamaican lady who has turned me on to musicians I likely wouldn't have otherwise heard. A little bit of reggae, though, goes a long way for me, and I listen to it sparingly.

Tue Feb 03 2009As I learn more about the range of reggae sounds and influences, I keep finding new sounds and artists who I love, especially on the indie labels. Reggae is more then Trenchtown Rock - it ranges from ska and punk to ambient dub, with plenty of interesting stops along the way, including dubstep and dancehall. If you're only familiar with Bob Marley, I'd recommend also checking out some contemporary headliners such as Michael Franti and Spearhead (sounds similar to Ben Harper, IMO), Matisyahu, Sister Nancy, and Mavado. If you're more interested in hearing some of the dub reggae greats, try putting King Tubby on Pandora or pick up a Lee Scratch Perry album and prepare for a session with one of music's most inventive recording artists. Then there's a whole world of New Zealand dub, the paragon of which is Tiki Taane, formerly of Salmonella Dub. If you want to stay closer to home, check out the Gorillaz underrated dub album "Laika Come Home" or "Radiodread," collection of Radiohead dub cove... Read more
