Fri Oct 30 2009Let me start off by saying that this is overall a VERY good product, but receives 3 stars for a design flaw. The green LED is ALWAYS blinking, even with the main switch "off". This constant parasitic drain on the batteries ruins my intended use of a long-term storage emergency light for the house. I did call Rayovac on this issue and they said that it will drain the batteries in 32 days. This cannot be accurate and I know that this small load will take MUCH longer than 32 days to drain the batteries. Still, for my purpose I now must remove the batteries and fumble in the dark to put them in during a power failure. The difficult battery cover (mentioned by many in the reviews) does not help this issue! Yet another product that is ALMOST great. I would have bought many more of these for family members to use as emergency lights, but now have to find a better option where the batteries will still be full after long term storage. Hope this helps!

Mon Oct 26 2009Bought this model at Lowes for $25. Convenient for use around the house, in the attic, etc.. I'm using D-size battery adapters to second use the AA battery rejected by my kids' Wii games. The light is still bright enough, and should last for months for occasional use. The LED light appears very efficient to drain the last drop of juice in the battery. So before recycling the AA battery, re-use it on this lantern -- I guess until the pilot green light is no longer blinking. Should help mother earth if we all do that.

Fri Oct 23 2009Searching for an alternative to the inconvenience of gas fill-ups and difficulty with mantle breakage at campouts, I ventured into battery-powered LED illumination. I have used a very low wattage Coleman model 5310 lantern that uses 4 D cell batteries for several years as a tent and reading light, but it had nowhere near the brightness needed for the larger camp area. After considering other reviews of various Coleman LED models, and trying an inexpensive off-brand that provided nowhere near enough light, I came across the Rayovac SE3DLN Sportsman Extreme. The combination of 300 lumens brightness and only 3 D cells to power it far surpassed the Coleman options available which included higher price for less light and more batteries required. As other reviews had indicated, it is extremely bright to look at directly but is a quick adjustment once realized. I spent 6 nights (and early mornings) in camp and, using rechargeable NiMH batteries did not approach the rated 72-hour battery ... Read more

Mon Oct 12 2009If you really need a lot of light get something larger. For a small room or possibly a tent, it should do nicely. It is light and compact and suits my purposes.

Fri Oct 09 2009I bought this lantern; because when compared to all the others that I looked at - it was smaller, lighter, more durable, and used less batteries but provided more light. After using it on a 2 week camping trip - it didn't let me down. When we lost "house" power in our RV, I placed it on the kitchen table to play cards. The couple that we traveled with complained that it was too bright. Rather than turn it down to the lower level, I unscrewed the top and used the bottom hook to hang it upside down from the ceiling. This application provided more than enough light to play cards and see everything else within the entire RV. It was no longer "too bright"; because it was above eye level. I also hooked it to a tree branch above our picnic table. It provided enough light to cook on the camping stove and eat dinner for four. At the end of the camping trip, I couldn't detect any depreciation in battery power. The couple that we traveled with has been camping for years, with all kinds of e... Read more
