Wed Aug 05 2009The ignorance and naivety of these comments astound me. If you have absolutley no knowledge on a subject then why would you comment on it? Domesticated pet rats do NOT carry disease, they do NOT bite, and they are NOT dirty. Rats constantly groom themselves all day long and are very clean, they are very affectionate, they bond with their owners, they are intelligent and can be taught tricks, they can easily be litter trained.. I could go on. I have 4 rats and have never once been bitten and all of them are very attached to me and eachother, they are some of the most wonderful sweet animals I have known. Please people, stop spewing your ignorance it really reflects poorly on you. All wild animals carry disease, people kill the wild versions of dogs and cats all the time too, and if wild dogs and cats had a habbit of invading homes you can be damn sure they would sell traps for them as well. Hamsters and Gerbils bite and are solitary animals that don't really need or want to bond with ... Read more

Thu Apr 30 2009Of small rodent type animals, hamsters, gerbils, etc. , rats make the best pets. Of all the animals on earth rodents rank number 10 for intelligence. That means that they are smarter than your average dog or cat. They are among the cleanest animal, cleaner than your cat. And they are very affectionate and social. If you feel the need to get a tiny mammal as a pet, then this is the animal you need to get.

Fri Mar 13 2009I have owned 6 rats in the past. I currently own 2. They are great with kids! They are easy to maintain, and they are smart! They are very friendly, hand held size, and not a normal pet, so its fun to introduce friends to them. My 8 month old giggles when he sees and pets one of our rats, and she is very gentle with him as well. You can train them not to bite, just dont tease them with food thru the bars of their cages. If you cannot afford a dog, or cannot have large animals but still want the friendship from an animal , I would highly suggest a rat. They love to be held, and yes you can train them :) They are a 5 star animal to me :)

Fri Oct 03 2008I currently have 106 rats. I LOVE these pets. I also breed them for the Pet Stores in our area. I can definately say that these are very good pets to have. The thing you need to understand is there is BIG difference in a wild sewer rat and a pet rat. First pet rats are given vaccines to protect you and the rat from diseases the other rats usually carry. Second pet rats can be trained to do tricks, and if raised right will be loving and loyal to their owners. Pet rats love to ride on your shoulders as you walk around, they are known to give kiss(lick you) when they meet your face. Also they will always return to their cage because they know where they will be feed and where they are taken care of. I highly recommend them for pets even for kids. My kids are 4 & 7 and they love to hold them and play with them. If you get a rat I recommend a baby so you can get it use to holding and playing and you wont need to worry about any bitting. Also research any animal that you get so you know it ... Read more
