Based on a short story by Tolstoy, on his experiences during the first Chechen war-in the 1800s. Prisoner of the Mountains takes place 150 years later, and the Russians are still fighting in Chechnya... Two Russians are taken prisoner and held in a remote mountain village. One falls in love with his captors, the other swears revenge. The contrast between Chechen and Russia society and folkways is well depicted. One of the best anti-war films ever made.
