The average American knows nothing of survival short of picking up meat in one pound saran wrapped packages. Other countries produce food from corner to corner on 50 ft lots. Any guesses on who might be ready for trouble? I’m farm raised and kept a family truck patch (selling beautiful vegetables to dumb people). I will offer thoughts on pragmatics and “table farming.” Potatoes must be planted before St. Pat’s (Midwest rule). If they freeze off they’ll come back stronger. You must mound and mulch or your potatoes will scald. Radishes can be grown across the Potato row-they make in 20 days, long before the potatoes run them out. Potatoes harvest when the vine is dead, not yellow, dead. Dig them out and plant a fall crop in the old harvest row. Harvest them after a killing freeze. “New potatoes” are great. Potatoes should be dried in open air before storing. They will shrink a bit, but wet potatoes won’t keep. My favorite way to “put them up” involved a pressure cooker and quart jars.... Read more

There are many different ways to prepare potatoes, and the only way they become fattening is when the portions are unreasonable, like with anything.

I could probably go a long time without eating potatoes. I never cook anything with them myself, for the most part because they take forever and you have to buy so many at once. I like them in indian food.

These are very versatile. I never used to like them, but they grew on me. I remember those days in grade school though...the school lunch one's...yuck! & I'll pass on instant ones. A little on the fattening side though...

Anyone who doesn't know the scoop on the potato by now should consider going back to school. Sure, mashed potatoes, fries and chips taste great, but it's all empty carbs. You're getting nothing from the potato bro. Might as well have a side of chocolate cake with that cheeseburger.

Potatos are very versatile and can be quite enjoyable, but most of the time they don't do a whole lot for me. I would rather have many other fresh fruit and vegetables than eat potato.

Baked, Fried, boiled , mashed or Au Gratin. Doesn't matter, the potato is one of the best food God put on this green Earth. America is a meat and potato country and the potato has earned it's place in American Cuisine. Native to the Americas too.

The King of all vegetables. So diverse. Tastes great whether it's roasted, mashed, boiled, chipped, jacketed or sauted. A great accompaniment to meals or enough on their own.

I guess I'm going to be forever branded odd for this but I don't particularly like them. I'd rather eat cheetoes than chips, I'll choose a soup or a salad over them, no matter how they are prepared, as a side dish ( yes that includes french fries) and I won't eat them on their own or baked etc. I'll even go so far as to pick them out of whatever I'm eating or eat around them when I have to be polite if they've been included in a recipe. I just don't like them. I will say one thing though the skins aren't bad so thet get a 2.

Most vegetables are not especially great, but potatos are so versatile. They're good on their own, but they can also be made in to french fries and home fries, which are so delicious. Also, being Irish, I must respect the potato, which was Ireland's main crop before it all went bad.

Where would our society be without this glorious vegetable? I know that I'd die without it. There's just so many things to do with a potato- you can make french fries, fried potatoes, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, potato soup, etc. I love eating mashed potatoes or baked potatoes with a good steak. This is the supreme vegetable of the land.

I can't think of a single way that I DON'T like 'em! I definately love twice-baked potatoes, those are great . . . . and, of course, Au Gratin is cool . . . . (Yeah, I know it's pretty lame rating potatoes, but I'm bored, and I happen to have a craving for a baked potato right now.)

There are 38 million Americans of Irish descent, myself included. The potato -- or lack thereof -- put them here. Since the Irish built America, looks like we owe a lot to the spud.

This vegetable started to die off and we almost lost the Irish. Think about how necessary potato's are when viewed in that perspective. They are the most versatile vegetable and, generally, good no matter what. A Helpful Hint: When picking out potato's look foor green marks or patches; it may just appear to be a brown mark, but scratch the surface away with your nail, if it is green don't buy it. It turns green because the potato was exposed to too much sun light or UV lights. This makes it begin clorophyll production; the green patches can make what ever you use the potato for a little bit bitter. I worked in a produce department for a couple years.

Of course, the most unhealthy way to have potatoes (fried) just happens to be my favorite. They are great baked (smothered with butter), but they are not as good boiled. This pretty much ruins the great flavor of them unless you add enough salt and butter. Hash browns are excellent too.

The mighty potato is the best vegetable out there because of the simple fact that you can do anything with it. My personal favorite is hashbrown casserole topped with cheddar cheese. French fries are really good if they're made with olive oil instead of the regular frying oil; they do that a lot in Europe. Baked potatoes are good only if they are loaded to the brim with sour cream, broccoli, cheese and bacon; otherwise, potatoes can be very bland. South American potatoes are the best because there is more genetic variation among the potatoes. No one potatoe (an ode to Dan Quayle) tastes the same there; there is a huge variety which you just won't find in the States.
