Wed Nov 18 2009I used to like to watch those Popeye reruns. On one of those cartoons Popeye and Bluto both wanted to get hurt and to be taken to the hospital because Olive Oyl worked there as a nurse. Popeye made Bluto eat a can of spinach and Bluto beat the Hell out of him. Bluto sent Popeye to the hospital and Olive took care of him and paid attention to him just like he wanted.

Fri Sep 11 2009Damn but he talked a lot of shit under his breath in the really old B&W ones! Brutus was a bad-ass, Olive Oyl was a skinny-ass ho, and Wimpy was a junkie always trying to sponge some free food when he was coming off a binge. Forget the spinach...Popeye was probably really a 'roids freak... ;)

Wed Jul 16 2008Five stars for the Popeye cartoons with Bluto as his nemesis. The one where Popeye destroys his house with a double-barreled shotgun to kill some flies is classic. Also look for some early "Sinbad the Sailor" and "Ali Baba and the 40 thieves" in color and with some very 3-D effects. Much longer than the standard Popeye cartoons.

Fri Sep 14 2007My mom raised me on classic Popeye. Every morning before elementary school, we would watch it on tv. It brings back many good memories. The animation is fantastic, too.

Fri Apr 06 2007I never liked Popeye, I always thought that it was stupid and just too predictable.

Wed Jun 28 2006The Fleischer Popeye cartoons are classics of imagination, innovation, and humor. And they are probably the closest to Segar (though nothing can beat Segar's Popeye IMHO) of any animated incarnation of The Sailor Man. The Famous Studios cartoons made Bluto (and Popeye's other male foes) and Olive Oyl into romantic leads. It is probably this version of Ms. Oyl that people here are referring to when they talk about how hot she was and that she inspired crushes. I certainly had a crush on her. (To see a gallery of Olive Oyl imaages start at http://www.mtcnet.net/~bierly/olbeauti.htm . To read about the makeover Olive was given and the effect it had on TV- watching male Babyboomers go to http://www.mtcnet.net/~bierly/olivefab.htm . To read about how Olive's personality, mannerisms, etc. made her hot, go to http:www.mtcnet.net/~bierly/olivepkg.htm .) I enjoyed the Famous Studios cartoons for their adventures and for their emphasis on romantic, even sexy plotlines. As the '50s wor... Read more

Fri Jun 16 2006Sort of embarrassed to say it, but I had a little-boy crush on Olive Oyl. That was until I saw Yvonne Craig as Batgirl.

Thu Mar 03 2005Bluto should have been ashamed of himself for letting that little guy kick his a** so much. What a waste of muscle. And for what? Olive? Come on already.

Tue Oct 14 2003I'm rating classic, B&W Popeye, everything since then has been sub-par at best.

Tue Oct 14 2003My 5 stars apply only to the EARLY Popeye cartoons, not the later dull ones. They were clever, both in plot and animation. "Wotta Nightmare" was an absolute classic. I never did understand why his nemesis was named Brutus part of the time and Bluto at other times. I also never knew whether Swee'pea was a boy or a girl, or where he/she/it came from. But that was part of the fun of the show. It cracked me up how those two guys could walk past a whole row of beautiful women, unfazed, but when they saw Olive Oyl, their eyes bugged out. Also liked it when they were pulling on her and stretching her arms out - great fun to watch when I was little. Oh yes --- Popeye used to mumble a lot of funny things if you listened closely. I didn't really pay attention to that part of it until I got older.

Tue Oct 14 2003Very repetitive and I think Olive Oil is insane. She drives me up a wall.

Mon Oct 13 2003Very funny cartoons. Something just came to my attention. I remember watching some of the old color versions of the "Popeye" cartoon on TNT when I was a kid, and the other night I was watching Cartoon Network and I think I saw the exact same cartoons ( same voices, same movement) except in black and white. I always thought some of those color versions looked kinda sloppy, guess they just painted over them or something. The black and white versions looked a lot better though.

Thu Oct 02 2003Awesome, especially the earliest Popeye cartoons when his voice is nearly inaudible at times.

Thu Mar 13 2003I'm in complete agreement with President-X-D: Classic (B&W) Popeye was awesome, not so with later episodes.

Thu Oct 11 2001Doesnt the same thing happen in every episode? Bruno or whatever flirts with Olive and Popeye beats him up. It gets old after a while.

Mon Jul 30 2001It is just not good at all anymore.

Thu Jul 05 2001If you want to see some really funny cartoons you need to watch the very oldest of the Popeye cartoons. I mean the ones in black and white. The animation is terrible but the dialogue is outrageous. Sometimes it borders on adult humor, much like the Betty Boop cartoons made about the same time. The same woman was the voice for both Betty Boop and Olive Oyl. In the oldest Popeye cartoons he fought Bluto, later they changed his name to Brutus. You have to admire a man who can blow fire through a pipe that is hot enough to cut the top off of a can of spinach, and then one second later suck the spinach through the same pipe and not get burnt.
