Hey these are great! How else are you going to learn how to make $2000 an hour with your computer, or get a full collection of pictures of women corrupting the morals of farm animals.

George Carlin's new rules for 2008 evaluate pop-up ads."New Rule: Stop giving me that pop-up ad for classmates.com!  There's a reason you don't talk to people for 25 years.  Because you don't particularly like them!  Besides, I already know what the captain of the football team is doing these days --- mowing my lawn."

I mentally track those advertisers who use pop-ups and boycott them. Probably the worst web site for pop-ups has to be Drudge Report. My 10-year old boy was web surfing on my computer unsupervised when he got hit with that egregiously heinous pop-up (WARNING: YOUR COMPUTER MAY BE RUNNING SLOWLY BECAUSE OF SPYWARE. DOWNLOAD THIS SOFTWARE TO SCAN) -- He clicked Yes and downloaded spyware. It took me a week and every computer skill I have ever learned in the past 25 years to clean this crap out without significant damage. Hey, it's a dangerous World Wide Web out there.

When it comes to shear annoyance, pop up ads top my list easily. Bless the person that invented the pop up blocker.

URGH! I get so impatient with the pop-up ads. Hiss! I don't think anyone would actually pay attention to them... they just get in the way... But they're not that bad! I mean, you just close them and they are gone. In conclusion, the pop-up ads are annoying, but not the most annoying internet problem.

Ever since I downloaded Firefox, I haven't had any problems with pop up windows (it's very rare for me to run into one). But overall, they can be annoying if you don't have the software to prevent them.

SOLUTION: Stop using Internet Explorer and download a different browser... most of them come with pop-up stoppers that are very effective... I haven't seen a pop-up in 2 years.

I think that even worse than the fact that they pop up is the fact that some of them are a real pain to get rid of (or, to un-pop them, as it were). They don't seem to react well to just one simple click to make them go away. Sort of like an electronic version of telephone telemarketers - they just don't take no for an answer, but like the Energizer bunny, they keep on going and going and going...

This is very annoying and can also muck up your computer as well as some of them put cookies onto it and you'll get plagued by them. We have a pop-up blocker and my other half does a very thorough virus scan and gets rid of any crap that may be on our machine.

Definately the most annoying part about spending time working on the net. I have pop-up blockers and somehow, certain ads still make their way to my aol desktop.

Popups are the #1 most annoying thing about the Internet. Thank God I finally have the Google toolbar's popup blocker. I haven't had ONE popup since I installed it!

Pop-up ads are clearly the worst aspect of the net; however, we have all grown accustomed to free online services and websites that these ads finance, including (I suppose) RateItAll, though this site doesn't have any pop-ups thus far. It would seem to me that the advertisers and the websites would be better served to just put the add on the requested page as opposed to the pop-up as so many people now have swatters or just close the window before it loads. As other comments have noted, they are getting sneaky with some looking like error messages, no x box to close, etc. Frankly, being such an irritant, I don't understand how these things generate any actual sales.

If you have a cable modem, meaning you are always connected, and you accidentally leave your computer running while you're at work/school, you'll come home to about thirty of fourty pop ups. I began to wonder how many people actually listen to these? I think about as much as the people who listen to the telemarketers

Thes things piss me off worse than anything else on the internet. Not only are they just annoying and abtrusive, but they slow everything down and can keep you from getting something important accomplished (or unimportant). I'd like to get my hands on whoever came up with these....

Very annoying. I actually clicked on something that said I had won a $25 gift card to Wal Mart. I filled out the information, but they attacked me with even more pop ups, asked really odd and random questions, and it never ended. After about 15 minutes of that, I just closed the window.

These little pests are really starting to get sneaky. Like the ones that look like an actual error message window or the ones that pop up just large enough that you can't get to the X to get rid of them. And if you've ever gone searching for animated .gifs you can get so tangled up in these that you can't figure out what page you just clicked to. I recently downloaded a little program that gets rid of them called PopSwatter. It was free if anyone wants to get it...go to PopSwatter.com. If you leave your sound turned up you hear the sound of a buzzing fly and then the ::SWACK:: of a fly swatter. Somehow that gives me a certain amount of satisfaction.

we have a pop-up blocker on our computer it helps some. I do not like unwanted ads anymore than anyone else. when they do show up it makes me more determined there is no way I am interesed in what they are showing. Plus I hate the time it takes away to get rid of them.

Pop-up ads increase loading times of the website you actually WANTED to get on, and some places pop up three or four ads on you for ONE site! The ones that are just text (a messaging service built in by windows) are the most annoying, since they pop up every five minutes (literally), and they're mostly ads for programs which STOP pop-up ads! For relief from these things, if you go to www.panicware.com, I believe there's a free Pop-Up Stopper to download. Trust me. It's worth it.
