Thu Oct 21 2010Not bad, until you work with kids who play it every freakin' day. Ugh. Winey trash. Stolen riffs. Yuck.

Wed May 20 2009I don't really understand their appeal. I enjoyed 'Monkey Gone To Heaven', but only as a novelty song. All of their songs seem to be very similar-sounding two minute simple chord bashing songs with identical drum beats and irritating vocals. Maybe there's something I'm missing, but I don't see the appeal of uninteresting, repetitive music which grows irritating after a short while. Maybe there's some hidden genius in the lyrics, but they're not really giving me much motive to find out... Maybe I'm missing something...

Tue Jan 02 2007Joey Santiago's amazing guitar leads were the Pixies' hidden strength. When you hear something like the bridge on the Strokes' "What Ever Happened?", you know that's the work of a Santiago wannabe. I have to admit that the rest of the Pixies kind of repulse me. I just don't identify at all with Frank Black, and would be frightened for anyone who does. But the song structures themselves can't be matched by anyone else in modern rock. I definitely perk up when this comes across my FM.

Fri Aug 12 2005A band with substance. Can you say, brilliant guitar riffs?

Mon Jul 18 2005I was first turned on to The Pixies, through a male musician I was collaborating with. As a huge Kurt Cobain/Nirvana fan at the time, I was intrigued by their sound, and his spiel that they were Nirvana's main influence. I bought their breakthrough album Surfer Rosa, in New Orleans, (Houston doesn't carry much of the good stuff). After hearing this album I was hooked. Surfer Rosa, Come on Pilgrim, and Doolittle continue to be my favorite albums; as they are the only three I own. They also rock live in concert.

Mon Jun 27 2005Top band. Harder than many so-called metal bands and an underrated player in Santiago. Deserves 5 stars for Monkey gone to heaven alone.

Mon May 16 2005a highly enjoyable band. As correctly pointed out by others they started the grunge thing.

Mon Jan 31 2005Paved the way for grunge but Nirvana took all the credit. Guess who got the whole quiet verse-loud chorus thing going folks. Not Kurt Cobain that's for sure. Hugely influential and are long overdue widespread recognition. Bands like Weezer and the Foo Fighters owe them a big debt.

Fri Jan 28 2005You either get them or you don't, simple as that. They are one of the best bands of any era, period. They would have sold 5 million albums if they'd played normal pop/rock tunes and Frank had sung in a Bono/Stipe hybrid. Thankfully they were too weird and unacessable, so you can't pretend to like them (why would you when there is so much easy listening modern rock to entertain the masses).

Fri Jan 21 2005I was talking to peachy-peach about kissy-kiss... You buy me a soda... You buy me a soda... You buy me a soda and you try to molest me in the parking lot. Yep, yep, yep!

Sun Jan 16 2005Pixies rock, no doubt, but they could be a bit uneven. Those who appreciate any guitar driven alt rock owe these guys a debt of gratitude. Still, I prefer Dinosaur Jr for my mid-80s/early 90s guitar driven alt rock fix. J Mascis was the man back then.

Mon Aug 16 2004One the greatest bands ever. Probably the most influential band since the Beatles.
by ruby9916
Fri Jul 09 2004One of those rare bands whose stature has grown over time and the records still sound great. When I saw Bowie recently cover Cactus (from Surfer Rosa), it made me go back into a big Pixies phase...

Sun Feb 29 2004The Pixies are a pretty good band. The single Debaser is a new favorite of mine.

Tue Dec 30 2003The Pixies are one of the bands that I made an effort to appreciate more, but I could never quite get over the hump. My first exposure to the band was via a borrowed CD of Doolittle (1989) and was very impressed; however, upon buying my own copy and some of their other releases, I found that the group's other full-length efforts just did not measure up to my tastes and expectations. The track list of Doolittle looks like a greatest hits package (and sounds like one too) as almost every song is a winner including Debaser, Wave Of Mutilation, I Bleed, Here Comes Your Man (the Pixies' best tune), Monkey Gone To Heaven, La La Love You, and Gouge Away. The bottom line for the more casual fan is that one should stick with the excellent compilation release Death To The Pixies 1987-1991 supplemented by Doolittle if inclined.

Wed Sep 17 2003Great stuff. They had a lot in common with pop-punk bands of today, except that the Pixies were actually quite intelligent. They had lyrics that were irreverant but which had wit to back them up. I don't really care if they were the inspiration for Nirvana. I mean, I like Nirvana as much as the next guy but the Pixies had the same lo-fi pop sensibilities and wrote wonderfully catchy songs, but without the bitterness and incoherent apathy of Nirvana. Just writing this review I have a few songs of theirs stuck in my head, but they're quite welcome to be there.

Sat May 10 2003Wish I'd known about these guys when they were touring, might have changed my life. Still, if Kurt Cobain was John Lennon, then the Pixies were Chuck Berry.

Wed Apr 23 2003Along with sonic youth, they were the best and most influential alternative band of the late 80's. Their effect on music can not be downplayed, they had great albums.

Mon Sep 10 2001The pixies are my absolute favorite band of all time. There are no words that can describe what deep and everlasting love I have for them all. With truly brilliant songs like 'I Bleed', 'Monkey Gone to Heaven', 'La La Love You', 'Debaser', 'Gigantic', 'Dig for Fire', ' Wave of Mutilation', 'Hey'-god, so many more that I really love to death, the Pixies achieve this rare sort of balance between so many different elements so perfectly. If you hear the Pixies, they become your favorite band, and deservedly. Black Francis and Kim Deal's vocals are amazing, the songwriting is amazing, the instrumentals are amazing-absolutely every facet of this band is so amazingly amazing (not to horrifying over use that word, it's just really appropriate in the this context). I just can't say enough about this visionary and mind-blowing band. Every CD-every SONG is impeccable. I wish I could give more than five stars.

Tue Mar 13 2001why, black francis, why??? you silly fool, why did you disband the pixies?? oh, you're solo work is 3 1/2 stars, but the pixies were the best!! oh the heights you could've reached! i weep for the death of the pixes. all their albums are classic, but trompe le monde was the best smashfest i've ever heard. and so gleefully executed too. please reunite the band, blackie. i never did get to see the pixies live (too young then). you just can't let me go to my grave without that experience. what do ya say about a reunion tour? you can call it the resurrection of the pixies. pweeaase....?

Wed Feb 07 2001My fiance introduced me to this band when I offerd to treat him to a CD and he decided on 'Death To The Pixies'. Their songs just really stick in your mind with the overwhelming lyrics and guitar music. 'Where Is My Mind?' was used in 'Fight Club', and since then in the UK, their songs have been used for ads. 'Girl you're so groovy I want you to know. Don't know about you, but I am moved.....' Love putting this on the jukebox in the local pub and having it played full blast.

Wed Jan 24 2001my all time favorite band. ever ever ever. i don't care who they influenced or didn't. they're so damn good. good party music. "alec eiffel" is my personal fave as well as "down to the well" and "carabou". i think a lot of younger people who are into a lot of popular alternative music would dig the pixies if only they had access.

Tue Jan 02 2001Influenced the grunge movement. Ahead of their time, great songs. "Death to the Pixies" is a must have for anyone with good taste in music. "Where is my mind" is a f**king excellent song!
