UPDATE: It's bad enough when pit bulls maul kids, but attacking a guard llama? That is too much! http://www.sunjournal.com/city/story/964993 I'm tired of this "awww...pit bulls are so cute and harmless!" crap. Would you let your kids play with a Glock because it's cute? http://jacksonville.com/news/crime/2010-10-27/story/investigation-continuing-dog-mauling-death-jacksonville-newborn Pit bulls are bred to tear other animals to shreds. Including humans. Hey, you pit bull-loving bozos! There are 150 breeds of dogs out there. Lots of them are cute, too. And they don't eat children. Get a life.

These dogs came by their reputation the old fashioned way. They earned it. Do a little research on the number of serious attacks by this breed as opposed to most others. The fighting traits have been bred into them for a long time, and it doesn't go away because they are treated with love and affection. I'm not saying that every pit bull is vicious, but every one is a potential danger, and much more than most other breeds. Saying otherwise is simply being blind to reason.

One of my ex-wives first cousin had a pit bull. It used to bite the tires on his car and make them go flat. He finally had to give the dog away to an orphanage.

These dogs do not underachieve when it comes to biting things. I've been bitten by every breed I've encountered except this one, but I feel its because I've only met well trained Pits that know they're living in a cardboard world. Little known fact- Rottweiler's bite much, MUCH harder in actual tests. Honorable mention goes to the Lhasa Apso. It looks like its bite would feel like a butterfly landed on you, but it's a fearsome little son of a bitch.

Pit bulls get a bad rap. This is the best working dog that america has bred to offer! Depending on how the dogs is bred has alot to due with him.Don't trash a breed on what you read, hear or see . Get to know the breed,it my or my not be for you. This bred can be loving and gentle. It can also be very protective also.Don't forget it is a terrier.I own pitt bulls for over 10 yrs. They where great dogs.

I am 21 years old, and my family have owned pit bulls and bull breeds for over 40 years. In that time ONE dog out of TWENTY that have been in my family has ever bitten anyone, and the one that bit? Bit a trashman who picked and taunted the dog!! I have been raised around these dogs ALL my life, and all of them are friendly, loyal, and easy going dogs, but yes they are strong, stubborn, but are loyal and eager to please! My two rescued pits (one is 9 and i rescued her when she was 3, after having been a BAIT DOG for dog fighters! ) and the other is 4 and I rescued him as a 6 month old puppy. both of these dogs have JOBS, one is a therapy dog and the other is just a companion, but both are exercised daily and twice a week do pulling to help keep the muscle that pitbulls are supposed to have toned and to dispense the excess energy that this breed has. If a dog is properly taken care of these animals are just like any other...any animal if not given what they need have the potential to b... Read more

It truly amazes me that people do so little research of their own on this breed. Pitt Bulls have one of the worst reps in the dog world all because irresponsible, ignorant and evil people use the best quality of this breed agents them. Pitt Bulls used to be one of the most highly recommend dogs for families and companionship due to their incredible loyalty and drive to make their owners happy. Did you know at one point this breed was a nanny dog? They were left with small children to watch over them. I do not own a Pitt Bull but I would in a heart beat! I have some friends that breed these dogs and I absolutely love taking my dogs over to play with them and I love to go play with them. Any animal is capable of violence. LOOK AT HUMANS! They are what you raise them to be and if you are loving and kind they will be too. They require a lot of exercise and attention and if you have the time for that we will have a wonderful dog.

Evidence is stacking up against the pit bull. It was bred to be a fighter and they do seem to get out of control. People talk about them licking them. Actually as I am reading for a certain type of licking etc. and over doing it, it is showing their dominance. There are other things many people aren't aware of so it is difficult. The facts are there to look up. Some choose to ignore the warnings. I don't think they should have a right to endanger others. It should at least have a muzzle.

This is possibly one of the most loyal, tolerant breeds I have had the honor of gaining experience with. I am kind of a new owner, have had one for 2 years now, but I have volunteered at many shelters and rescues who have mostly Pit Bulls so I have a great deal of experience with them, besides owning one. I agree with a previous review, they are SUPER hyper, which can be a big hand full but they are not the stereotype most people have. The media portrays them as vicious killers, who mostly have preyed on children. While, yes, this has happened but the circumstances are never explained in the stories, just that the dog is evil. My dog is the biggest baby ever and would never hurt anyone. He has a very stern and serious look, which scares most but he is a real baby. I am a responsible owner and have done nothing but socialize and enroll my dog in training from 8 weeks old, when I got him. The issue with this breed, as with others like German Shepherds and Rotties, is that many people b... Read more

Pit bulls after a LOT of research and meeting them through friends, I decided they are THE DOG for me, they have the best mixture of personality, power, intelligence, passion, and humor(known as a clown dog), not to mention overall a healthy breed and they make for the most loyal & sturdy companion. I have a pittie who is now 2 years old and I wouldnt trade her for the world. Pit bulls over time have become aggressive bc of mistreatment (http://www.dapbt.org/bite_statistics_study.htm) Any dog that is treated harshly can attack & any dog can be won over by love (look at every one of michael vick's pit bulls he used in fights that survived- they went to many families who say nothing but the best about how great and sweet they are). The UK banned pit bulls in the 1990s (think about all the beloved pitties whom were put on death row, leaving their families behind- I couldnt imAgine losing my baby, she would never hurt a fly!) as a result, the number of dog bites remained the SAME. The American Pitbull Terrier is an amazing breed: loyal, affectionate, athletic and intelligent. We own one and he is a fantastic dog, he loves children and is very sensitive. However too many pits have the misfortune of being stuck with stupid, irresponsible owners who don't understand the nature of the breed, and thus they set their dogs up to fail. Or they end up in the hands of ignorant thugs who try to turn them into vicious guard dogs even though their true nature is to love people. I work for a vet and not one employee has ever been bitten by an APBT, most of the dogs at work who bite are the little obnoxious yappy ones. I'll take my pit over one of them any day.

i'm about a year late on this one but clareok you must be a moron to think a red nose pit is a breed of pit bull. theres only one breed of APBT and thats APBT red noses are just a lineage is APBT's. i own 3 dogs a Staffy, APBT, and a Presa all wondeful dogs, althought the presa has a natural distrust for strangers which is natural to his breed as they are a gaurdian breed, oh i forgot to rag on meg@n too they are good protectors they have a natural fondness towards humans, therfore they dont make a good gaurdian dog, if you train a pit bull to gaurd then you have a dangerous dog that can't make the distinction between humans, and prey. drkseph you're a moron too, what the hell is a stanford terrier, are you trying to say staffordshire terrier?, american pit bull terriers, american staffordshire terriers, and staffordshire terriers and 3 completely different breeds of dog, amstaffs were breed to help bring in dangerous bulls from pastures, staffies were breed as a gentleman's dog in en... I have mixed feelings about this breed. I have worked in a Doggy Day Camp environment for 5 years now. I have seen a Pit Bull attack another dog so badly that 5 of us couldn't get the dog off the other dog. We used many techniques..a hose, a fire extinguisher, a high powered air can. After about 5 minutes the dog released. The Golden Retriever it attacked did live, surprisingly. I am scarred for life from witnessing it and will never trust the lock jawed breeds ever again. With that said. The breed can be sweet if trained properly. I have met some nice ones, but I will be forever cautious around them now.

My Father-in-law has a pit bull and he is still a puppy, just 7 months old. The one thing I hate about how he treats the dog is the he leaves him tied up all the time and hits him if he barks. The dog wasn't mean at all when he first brought him to the house, at 4 months old, but he is becoming agressive because of the way he is treated. I try to take him for walks and untie him when I can because he is very affectionate and loves to give kisses. When I take him for walks people in the street are afraid of him because of their misconception about this breed. I also didn't like this breed before because many people train them to be mean. It all depends on how you train the dog.

The best breed in my opinion. They are very loyal dogs that stick with their person. They get a bad rap beacuse of those who are irresponsible and train them to be mean this is not the fault of the breed but the fault of the people. Pits are great with kids (I trusted two of mine with my infant son, thy were in fact his dogs, ) they love to play and will put themselves in the greatest of danger to protect the ones they love. I have had a fwe pit bulls and more will be joining my family.

Has become more popular among gangster and inner city people over the years. Another breed where I feel the owners train this particular breed to be vicious and protective. I still think this is one of those breeds of dogs that would turn on their owner one day and I just dont trust them. I hear about this breed of dog in the news more then any other, and its always bad.

While most people have seemed to make assumptions about this breed they fail to look at a dog as a dog, and not as a breed. All dogs have the potential of being aggressive, or mean. its not the breed, is the jerks that TRAIN them to be that way or the idiots that cannot control the dog they chose to get because of how the perception of what the dog can "do" All dogs have teeth and claws. All dogs have a brain and the ability to learn. Pitt's are a poor example of peoples exploitations. They are smart and loving and trainable and want a job. People often give them the wrong jobs. They are great with children and other animals when properly conditioned and worked with. They have a great deal of loyalty, and compassion. They are large and most people mistake aggression for being excited, or dominance. They take someone who is a STRONG LEADER, and willing to take the time that goes into owning a great dog.

I own a pitbull and i think they are more dangerious than most breeds bc. their owners think that they are the sweetest things in the world and dont take the necessary precautions that need to be taken when owning a animal built like the pitbull is ....ex walking the dog of leash....letting them play with unknown dogs in dog parks......... i dont think my dogs going to attack another dog or wants to. But i dont EVER want him to be in that situation where he will have the choice...........and if he is ever in a situation where he can hurt another dog it is not my dogs fault it is my fault. You guys need to stop defending how nice your dog is and start being more realistic about your dogs actual capability of doing serious harm to somthing else if they wanted to. I belive you that your dog is nice but look at your dog and think of what he/she could really do if he/she was mean............... I think people hate them  bc they dont personally know your dog or care to and they probably watc... Read more

The good part about this dog is they have no fear right out of the womb.  This is also the bad part.  My ex girlfriend had a pit, and it loved me, but anyone can see that it often got into fights with other dogs.  It got along with my German Shepherd only because my German Shepherd didn't have an Napoleon complex...At the dog park, the ones fighting were almost always pit bulls and boxers.... I'm sure it's just coincidence...or that by some miracle all the "bad owners" seemed to pick pit bulls and boxers as pets.

Pit Bulls can be wonderful dogs in the right environment, just like any other dog (and actually a lot better than most breeds). Pit Bulls have an intense desire to please their owner and will do anything they think you want them too. If treated kindly and handled properly they can be wonderful around children and cats and other dogs. They just have a bad rap because of irresponsible breeders and owners who take advantage of this intense desire to please and exploit these wonderful dogs for their own selfish profit. Don't buy into all the negative hype. You are much more likely to be bitten by an Akita, Chow Chow, or Poodle than a Pit Bull.

I have owned several Pit Bull dogs, they were family dogs.  And yes it DOES depend on how you raise them.  None of my dogs have ever visciously attacked anyone just out of the blue.  They only attacked when given the proper command, which was generally in german or russian.  If you want to split hairs,  any dog can be perceived as a potential danger, you have to look no further than their master.

They are as dangerous as you make them. I've seen total babies and I've seen a bully or two. My brother had to kick one when the little bastard attacked my mom's mini weiner dog, though, so based on that track record and the one that tried to get me one time I feel comfortable telling people to watch it around these guys. For the record, I stared down and intmidated the one that thought about attacking me. I even growled and showed him teeth to illustrate my point. UPDATE: BS? One laid into my mom's five pound dog! How is this BS? The other one would have come at me if I wasn't so good at being primal. UPDATE: I found some stats on fatal dog attacks... http://www.dogbitelaw.com/PAGES/danger.htm#homicide s About half of the dogs I saw were pit bulls. Hmm...

As a trainer, the biggest problem I see from Pits is that they pull on the leash and jump up on people. They do this because of their friendly exuberance and its fairly easy to train out. This by and large is one of the friendliest breeds out there, because they are so eager to please they are also easy to train. This breed was very popular in the early twentieth century when they were used as war dogs (not as fighters) becauseof their loyality they would literaly risk their lives to save the lives of soldiars. I have never met a mean one and those that do mistreat them should be shot! This is not a breed for everyone however, as they are very active they require an active household with lots of excercise. Training should only be positve reward based training (praise is a great reward for this breed).
