Pet Sematary (Stephen King)

Creepy, disturbing premise handled reasonably well by King; I believe he once said in an interview that it was perhaps his most "personal" book, as he had a young son himself when he wrote it. Personally, I found the characters a bit more convincing than most of those found in King books (the lead male character invariably turns out in his early books to be a writer, obviously a projection of himself), although I've read other critiques that disagreed with that. It's not great literature...none of King's books are great; he's never going to become the next Poe, no matter how much he improves as a writer...but it's effective, especially if you as a reader have a young child of your own.

This is probably the best King book I've read. Creepy and very well-written.

It was hard to stomach the kid....good work, just difficult to deal with when you have children.

One of the best books he has written. Great read on those cold dark nights when you are home alone. Might want to read the book before watching the movie or you might be disappointed.

Disturbing story that never let me leave Ludlow in my mind... and in my nightmares. Zelda's twisting spine with hands that seemed to be claws, kept cutting her why into my thoughts late at night, mid-way and after the book. The horror never ended, leaving you making your own happy little ending. One of my personal favorites.

This book was awesome and I liked how King showed the desperation Louis had toward the end of the book. The book also had spooky and eerie parts to it. You don't what's going to happen next.

we've all experienced a death, i guess, and we've all longed for our family member, friend or cherished pet. This book sort of examines what would happen if they Could come back? would they be the same? it's a fun book to read, but it also teaches about grief and dealing with loss.

The only King novel that freaked me out more than this one was It. I can't thik of a more mature and compelling treatment of the "living dead" than the story this novel comtains. There was no way a film version could do justice to this story and seeing the film... I was right. King was at the height of his powers when he wrote this story. A masterpiece.

A great Stephen King novel, one of my favorites.

Just when I think King can't possibly write any better, he comes up with something like this. Horrifyingly scary? Yes, undoubtedly. But also, incredibly insightful observations on the human condition...this time dealing with how people deal with grief. An incredible read--written by an author who is VERY in touch with his subject matter...

The most frightening King novel out there - and I've read a fair number. He writes his best when the books carry a message about human nature (e.g. Needful Things, Dolores Claiborne, The Grren Mile, The Long Walk, and The Stand) and what a message this one does carry. I'm shocked that the phrase "pet sematary" has not yet entered the English language as a commonly used phrase to mean anything that should stay buried and doesn't. If you can distance yourself from the cynicism enough, this book is a trip through hell. Perhaps sometimes dead IS better.

Excellent book, probably my favorite one he's ever written. Had plenty of scary moments. A lot of times, I feel like Stephen King is treading over territory he's already covered, or that the endings of his books don't equal the rest of the book, but on this one, he did a great job all the way through.

A very awesome book with interesting ideas. It was the first King book I ever read and it was what got me into his books. The movie was horrible but it was one of the best books I've ever read.

This is the only scary book I've ever read. The scenes at night in the forrest are almost unbearably tense and creepy - i almost felt like I was walking along with the guy, holding his hand

This was a book that was actually better than the movie. The reason being is that if you posses a vivd imagination the scenes depicted could actually be more terrifying. This book had a lot of heart wrenching pauses that are classically reminiscent of horror books.

I enjoyed this book because I have lost many pets that were dear to me. I honestly got trapped in the illusion of having a pet come back to me.

In Pet Semetary, King postulates that perhaps bringing a loved one back from the dead isn't as great as it's cracked up to be, especially if you have to climb up a rugged slope to ancient Indian burial graound to accomplish it. What it they come back, well, different? Very interesting, fast paced, exciting book. A must read.

Stephen King has a way with animals and people and turning it into horror. This book will make you not only wonder, it will make you scared. Check it out if you like horror books. Also, check out the movie.

I thought this was pretty good. I could relate when I was growing up; I had several animals I wished more than once when they died that they would come back to life. Good storyline and a good ending. Kept me riveted.

Well, here we go. The book scared the complete crap out of me. I think I still have a bowel problem from reading that darn book!

Story of a man who discovers a way to bring the dead back to life. Begins with his cat, then his child. One problem is whatever he brings back comes back slightly changed.

Strong personification of pets as well as the link they represent to the netherworld. Raises issues of animal abuse.

Very freaky. I am very curious about Stephen King, where does he get these ideas. Very disturbing theories in this book, which made it an excellent horror read. He always teases you with the lovely Maine setting, the happy little family and then whacks you with the evil underlying theme. The book was much more terrifying than the movie.

This is the first Stephan King book I ever read. I really liked it. Stephan King is so descriptive. This is the book that got me to keep reading scary books.
