I get these every once in awhile.  Some make me feel weird while others make me feel like I'm about to die or something.

I haven't had that many, thank goodness, though I had a major one last summer, when I was trying to deal with a lot of stress in my life. I had had a particularly crappy day, and all of a sudden my heart started pounding and I started hyperventilating. I trembled uncontrollably, and stuttered. It seemed it lasted forever, but I would say it lasted about 15 to 20 minutes. I hope to never have an attack like that again. Fortunately, the factors that led to my freakout are gone now. I think the best way for me to deal with stress is to get rid of the things that are driving me nuts.

Just to differentiate, we're not talking about what might happen in a stressful situation, like "the boat is sinking", or the elevator is stuck between floors. This is what occurs at any time, for no apparent reason. I had 'em bad for a while, as they can be associated with sleep apnea, when your breath is suddenly cut off while you're asleep and you bolt out of bed, trying to catch up with your breath. These are a bitch and can drain an entire day's energy out of you in 30 seconds. Or they can happen any old time, regardless of the situation. The key is that they don't last very long and you find yourself breathing heavily. The reason for the breathing is that...as WiseGuy mentioned...your brain is starved of oxygen and you get thet Nitrous Oxide-like 'brain freeze' sensation. The way to cure this is by learning how to raise your body's pH level and keep yourself well-supplied with oxygen. There's lots of ways of doing this. The 4 best solutions that I have learned are: (A) taking lar... Read more

I think Ridge would agree that the first one, especially if it turns out to be a big one, can scare the shit out of you, my wife thought I was having a stroke or something. I was driving home from the gym, and I remember having a hard time breathing, I figured I worked out a little too hard. As I was walking into the house I noticed my arm was getting tingly and numb, and I was still having a hard time breathing.  I sat down, my wife noticed right away that something was wrong. I told her to give me a couple of minutes, but it got worse, she  made the 911 call. My muscles started to contract and I just curled up, I couldn't move. My kids were there as well, they were all freaking out. It does help when you can recognize the onset of an attack, but you're scared that it will turn out to be the big one, so you run for the pills. That didn't work out good for me. 12-6-08: One thing I know for sure is that the meds will drive you nuts, they were actually causing my panic attacks. I was ho... Read more

I've heard of these- but I've never had one.  I get angry and have plenty of bad habits but I'm not the panicky kind.  I once irritated a high school friend who was rather shaken after we all crawled out of a wreck and I simply stood there taking deep breaths and assessing the damage done to the other passenger.  "How the f#ck can you be so calm?" he barked.  I was more interested in slowing down my heartrate and checking out the injured.  Not much has changed since then. . .

Never had it, although a very close friend of mine was subject to them for a period of time. It appeared to be quite debilitating.

These can happen at unusual times. I've had three, two minor and one big one. The two minor ones happened as I was trying to deal with the situation surrounding my mother and only lasted about a minute. The big one happened about five years ago when I was doing some paper work. I was by myself and not in any kind of stressful situation. That one lasted about ten minutes (I undestand they can last up to 30). I was on medication for a short amount of time, but if anything it seemed to do more harm than good. I just try to get plenty of sleep and not let things build up. If something needs to be done I don't put it off, I get up and do it. But I think mostly it's just the fact that there is a lot to do right now and I'm the only one left to do it. There is no other choice.Funny thing is I have always had the reputation of being the calm one. The mother of a friend of mine took to calling me Job because of my patience. I still have that patience, it just takes a break from time to time.
