Even the biggest flag-waving red-state voter has to admit this is a mixed bag. American history has prime examples to be proud of along with historical moments that are absolutely shameful. The only thing we should be proud of is the capacity to freely discuss, publish, and deal with our history - something many Americans still have a hard time with. . .

Yay, two hundred years of rednecks thwacking Indians, blacks, each other and finally the land itself. American history has its moments, but ultimately the book lets you down hard.

That's a mixed bag. We have much to be proud of. Much to not be proud of.

i always love a good story about how a bunch of white people came to a new land and killed the indians. then they built it up, and brought the black man over when the work got too big. such a heartwarming tale.

I am in total awe of our nations history. I'll be honest, the wars don't really intrest me, but the goverment aspect of our history is truly worth learning.

We have a fine tradition of kicking people in the teeth when they need kicking.

We certainly have a colorful history, and I will say we have accomplished a lot in a relatively short period of time.

There's not another nation on the planet that can claim that have liberated and kept free over a billion people. The United States of America, however, can claim that proudly! Even more, the United States has led the way in Space Exploration on numerous occasions, including the first man on the moon and the first non-capsule manned spacecraft. Even more, numerous national heroes have been born in our own backyard. And, of course, being the nation that created Star Trek doesn't hurt at all! :)

i challenge anyone to find a nation in recent memory that has done more for freedom and democracy than the united states has done in the last century. this is our greatest legacy. we haven't succeeded every time and we have sometimes made terrible mistakes, but our heart is in the right place. most nations in the world are willing to sit on their collective asses and do nothing but complain.

US History was one of my favorite classes, because no matter what was going on in the curriculum, whether it was fierce battles or long protests, it was always -- at least to me -- fascinating. Maybe I mix English and History together too much, but it was like a century-long adventure story. I know this sounds weird, but I often thought of America as a character whose drive and opinions changed throughout its history. World War II was like America's coming of age, where it was forced to make a critical decision: remain in the safety of isolationism, or take its spot as a superpower...a choice that could never be reversed. It puts what's going on today in perspective...Even if you don't like it, it's just another chapter in the story! Geez, just talking about this makes me miss that class.

Certain apsects of and accomplishments in our history engender pride. Maybe what I'm most proud of is our wartime track record. Generally, we eschew war, until it comes to us. And I would include our current conflict under that umbrella. Agree or not, Bush makes it clear that our pre-emptive strike against Saddam was part and parcel of our battle againt islamic terrorists, Saddam included. With the exception of Korea & Vietnam, which battles were vindicated by Reagan's presidency, we don't lose once we arm up. This war will be no exception. The only variable is how long the islamofascists can continue fighting.

We whipped the Red Coats (twice), forged a Constitution, saved The Union, saved the World (twice), destroyed Communism (thanks Mr. Reagan), and are currently defeating terrorism. WHAT A COUNTRY!
