More of a way of managing emotions than an actual emotion, I think. I prefer what I call positive pessimism, which states that if you're ready in your mind for everything to fuck up, you can only be pleasantly surprised when it doesn't. To this day I hold in high esteem the Sergeant that told me that...

Has life handed you lemons? Make lemonade! Make the best of a bad situation. Of course there is going to be some discouragements and letdowns in life. So, don't let them take over!! Learn from your experiences and mistakes. Don't think of life as a drag; think of it as an ADVENTURE!! And SMILE.... you're on Candid Camera (LOL)!

Truly, one of the greatest emotions, next to love. I've basically decided that I'm a natural optimist. Not only do optimists live longer, they generally feel better and tend to do better in social situations. Nothing is quite as refershing and satisfying to see one's optimism proven when something wonderful happens. There have been numerous incidents that have led to my sanguine personality. For instance, my grandfather was said to have cancer--but like I believed, it turned out to be false. Even more, for 9 months, I lived with a relative who told me I was completely out of touch with reality. (Of course, this was definately not one of my great parents!) Yet, I made all A's in college while living with her. I also kept my room spotless when she toured guests around her house (unlike her son, who's room was locked), and made several friends. Because of her anger, my optimism was cemented--because her anger led nowehere, while my happiness and hope led to success.

How can I be optimistic if people like Jar-Jar Binks are voicing there uneducated opinions. Optimism is good because if we don't have it we'll all be angry jerks.

How can I be optimistic if the right-wingers are running the country for the next 4 years? ... How can I be optimistic if the Knicks are playing pathetic basketball lately? ... How can I be optimistic when I'm reaching closer to death by the second?

I'm not sure what Skizero means, but I'm certainly an optimistic person, and I'm no wimp. I always believe that I can do something when I set my mind to it and I prefer to believe that most, not all, people are good. Don't confuse optimism with naivete.

Give me an optimistic person anyday, people prefer their company. Just because your an optimist doesn't excuse you from a reality check every once in a while. People who are pessimistic can be funny at times, but then their constant pessimism just drags you down and pretty soon your thinking and acting like they do and their company can be both mentally and physically draining.

It's a good emotion to have I guess, but I always am prepared for the worst.

Optimism is a great emotion. I just wish I had more of it and I believe that your optimistic attitude can actually cause things to go in your favor. It is also an enviable trait to emulate.

I would have trouble calling optimism an emotion simply because it is so controllable. I did say I was being broad though so here it is. Optimisim, for me is putting things in perspective. Whenever something bad is happening, I simply think of those that are less fortunate than me. Sometimes this is little consolation, but it helps you not sweat the small stuff.
