Old Smuggler has proudly been our house scotch for years, in fact generations. This year, however, the blend took a turn for the worse. Where it has been consistently rich with a hint of smoke, now it tastes more like caramel flavoring than any normal scotch characteristic. I'd like to hear from the Distiller as to why the blend was changed, and hopefully, that it will back to snuff soon.

I normally drink Walker Black Label but went back to school and am now on a budget. This isn't as smooth but I am very impressed at this 1.75L bottle for $20.99 US!

UPDATED MAY 19, 2009: I went to my local liquor emporium and saw Old Smuggler in a big display. I bought a half gallon, in a plastic bottle yet, and it was still as good as I remember. This is a cheaper, sleeper scotch for flavor. Give it a try.ORIGINAL COMMENT: I haven't had it in years but it is great for the price! I first stumbled across it in Hawaii decades ago, and it is worth a try. Scotch is getting expensive, but this is still a bargain.

Have drunk Cutty for 40 years. Price is now important and I tried Old Smuggler at $14 and it is now MY scotch until my portfolio goes up 50%.

I buy it because tastes OK and at the moment cant afford more expensive whiskey. In Bulgaria is costs around $14 for 700 ml bottle. By the way here people never seen 750 ml bottles, I find that strange. Back in the USA alcohol is MUCH better quality and much more affordable.

Booz just dosen't get a heckuvalot better than this - the nose is very nice- smokier than green stripe, not as phenolic as cutty. This is not listerine, this is good boooz.

I give it a 3. It is decent scotch, no offensive overtones, and for the money it is a very, VERY good buy. A comfortable level of smoke, decent body, smooth to drink, but a rather short finish. If it was $30 I'd be disappointed, but at $10/litre, it is one heck of a good value.

O.K. bottom-shelf blended Scotch. Consumed a fifth for test purposes. Inoffensive but lacking in flavor. Not as smooth as the $15 to $20  priced blends. I think I paid about $13 for the 750ml bottle. For the same price I like the Ballantines product about one star better.

So glad you guys agree--I stumbled on this after sampling much more expensive scotches (lagavulin, laphroaig, macallan, etc.). It is blended, but it's very smooth, and the aroma is comparable to a glenlivet, imo. I buy it in Minot, ND for $14.00 USD.

Smooth, fellas. This Arkansan rates it a 4 +. And I've just had 8 oz over past hour.

I think it is as good as much more expensive Scotch's...I use it to make my Godfather (a half and half mix of Scotch and Amoretto) and it is a smooth, delicious, relaxing drink. And save money on the Amoretto and get Hiram Walker instead of the more expensive major brand.

The "sippin' whisky" of Scotch. Sipped straight, she is smooth and a bit "grainy", just like Johnny Walker Black. She doesn't keep her character with soda, water, or ice, but she is very, very smooth straight. If I were asked to improve the recipe, I would suggest a bit more peat. and, well, a little grain... I would love to give her four and a half stars. but she does need a bit more smoke to push the soda. All in all, she is worth every cent. Buy it. I do. Four stars.

Very smooth. I find it as good, if not better than the single malts. Good peaty flavor without the sweetness of some other scotch brands.

Great of the price. A little rough but for the price, it is perfect.

There again middle of the road scotch must like green stripe however cost much less than comparitive scotchs that I feel taste the same. If it had a little more body I could almost give it a five. The cost to taste ratio is very high.
